The Word of God is like a seed and your heart is the soil.

Most Christians want change in some area of their lives. They try and try to make those changes but soon find themselves falling back into the same habits and behaviors. Self-discipline and self-control have once again failed them.

So how does lasting change take place? A worm doesn't struggle to become a butterfly in the cocoon. A seed doesn't strive to become a tree and produce fruit. They simply do what they were designed to do by god and the change takes place, effortlessly.

The Word of God is like a seed and your heart is the soil. When it's planted and nurtured in the soil of your heart, it begins to grow. The result is transformation; and the fruit becomes evident to all. If you want real change in your life, this book is for you.

Great book!
By Donna
It really teaches that the Word of God is what gives life and it's like a seed in our lives. Whatever we need is in The Word, all we have to do is plant it in our heart. It's effortless compared to being used to having to make everything happen. We're so performance-based in our society that it's hard to accept the grace that God works through to give us all provisions of the Cross. This guy really teaches well and is very easy to understand and uses a LOT of WORD to get the message across which is what I want. Not somebody's opinions and thoughts ... but show me in God's Word. He does this ... effortlessly :-)

The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People Are Changing the World, by Paul H. Ray Ph.D., Sherry Ruth Anderson

ARE YOU A CULTURAL CREATIVE?

Do you dislike all the emphasis in modern culture on success and “making it,” on getting and spending, on wealth and luxury goods?

Do you care deeply about the destruction of the environment and would pay higher taxes or prices to clean it up and to stop global warming?

Are you unhappy with both the left and the right in politics and want to find a new way that does not simply steer a middle course?

In this landmark book, sociologist Paul H. Ray and psychologist Sherry Ruth Anderson draw upon thirteen years of survey research studies on more than 100,000 Americans. They reveal who the Cultural Creatives are and the fascinating story of their emergence over the last generation, using vivid examples and engaging personal stories to describe their distinctive values and lifestyles. The Cultural Creatives offers a more hopeful future and prepares us all for a transition to a new, saner, and wiser culture.

Amazon.com Review
Do you "give a lot of importance to helping other people and bringing out their unique gifts?" Do you "dislike all the emphasis in modern culture on success and 'making it,' on getting and spending, on wealth and luxury goods?" Do you "want to be involved in creating a new and better way of life for our country?" If you answered yes to all three of these questions--and at least seven more of the remaining 15 in Paul Ray and Sherry Anderson's questionnaire--then you are probably a Cultural Creative.

Cultural Creative is a term coined by Ray and Anderson to describe people whose values embrace a curiosity and concern for the world, its ecosystem, and its peoples; an awareness of and activism for peace and social justice; and an openness to self-actualization through spirituality, psychotherapy, and holistic practices. Cultural Creatives do not just take the money and run; they don't want to defund the National Endowment for the Arts; and they do want women to get a fairer shake--not only in the United States, but around the globe.

On the basis of Ray and Anderson's research, about 50 million Americans are Cultural Creatives, a group that includes people of all races, ages, and classes. This subculture could have enormous social and political clout, the authors argue, if only it had any consciousness of itself as a cohesive unit, a society of fellow travelers. The husband and wife team wrote the book "to hold up a mirror" to the members of this vast but diffuse group, to show them they are not alone and that they can reshape society to make it more authentic, compassionate, and engaged. It is an idealistic call for a new agenda for a new millennium. --I. Crane

From Publishers Weekly
In an attempt to reconceptualize shifting American demographics that's similar to David Brook's Bobos in Paradise (Forecasts, Mar. 13), Ray and Anderson posit that hidden within America are 50 million people, 26% of the population, who are what they call "cultural creatives." Based on 12 years of survey research, 100 focus groups and dozens of interviews, their study presents a complex portrait of these citizens. According to the authors, cultural creatives share a series of attitudes and concerns: "they like to get a synoptic view [and] see all the parts spread out side by side and trace the interconnections"; they have strong concerns about the well-being of families; they have a well-developed social consciousness and a "guarded optimism for the future"; they are disenchanted with "owning more stuff... materialism... status display and the glaring social inequities of race" and are critical of almost every big institution of modern society, including corporations and government. This cultural groupAdrawn from all classes, races, education and income levels and social backgroundsAhas emerged only during the past 50 years and, according to the authors, forms a coherent subculture, only "missing a self-awareness as a whole people." Ray and Anderson argue that cultural creatives hold the potential for radically reshaping the values and material realities, the "deep structure," of American life, and so they aim to make this group cognizant of their shared values, to bring about substantive changes. More successful than Brooks in grappling with issues of gender, ethnicity, race and class, Ray and Anderson offer unusual insights that, while broad and sweeping, shed new light on American culture and politics. From Library Journal
Ray, a market researcher, and Anderson, a psychologist and coauthor of The Feminine Face of God, have written a book about the 50 million so-called "cultural creatives" whose lifestyles and beliefs have been significantly informed by the social movements of the 1960s and 1970s. According to the authors, this group of AmericansDwhich includes environmentalists, feminists, and those interested in alternative medicine, natural foods, and new forms of spiritualityDadvances progressive causes by effecting cultural change rather than by participating in organizational politics. In turn a demographic study, a history of the environmental and Civil Rights movements, and a self-help manual, this book seeks to get cultural creatives to recognize their collective strength and bring it to bear on the problems created by global capitalism. The authors have definitely put their finger on an important trend in American life, and many readers will find themselves described within these pages. However, the book suffers from its expansive perspective; important social movements get cursory attention while lengthy anecdotes at times seem redundant or superfluous. Still, it is recommended for public libraries.DAndrew Brodie Smith, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lib., Washington, DC

Not Yet a Movement, But Showing Serious Potential
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
Edit of 11 Sep 08 to add links.

This book should be read together with Imagine: What America Could be in the 21st century, edited by Marianne Williamson. Taken together, the two books are inspirational while still being practical.

Cultural Creatives as a book, and some of the other reviews, tend to over-sell the success of the emergence of an alternative lifestyle to Traditionalists (stereotyped as somewhat red neckish and religious rightists) and Moderns (stereotyped as ravish the earth anything-goes corporate carpetbaggers). The reality is that there are as many "cultural creatives" as there are people with disabilities in the United States--50 million. Not one quarter of the population, as one reviewer claims.

Having said that, by way of somber stage-setting, I cannot say enough good things about this book. It should be required reading for every citizen, every student, and every public official. In a very real sense, this book strikes me as a truly seminal work that could help millions of individuals reframe their personal connection to one another, to their Republic, and to the earth.

This is neither a tree-hugger book nor a mantras R us book. This book provides a thoughtful review of how different movements--first the environmental movement, then the human rights movement, and finally the consciousness movement--have come together to define an alternative lifestyle and alternative paradigm for political and economic and social relationships in the larger context of a sustainable "whole" earth.

I found this book motivational and meaningful at both a personal level and a larger national level. At the personal level, its detailed and well-organized description of fifteen very distinct aspects of a "cultural creative" lifestyle helped me understand--as it has helped many others--that there is actually a category of people who have come to grips with and found solutions that enrich their lives--and this explains my great disappointment that the book does not offer a "resources" section at the end. I would have been very glad to discover, for example, a "Cultural Creative" journal or magazine that combined a strong book review section, art and culture, a consumer reports section tailored to the higher standards of the "CCs", new innovations in home restoration and remodeling, vacation options known to be attractive to CCs, etcetera.

At the higher political level, I found the book constructive and just this side of a tipping point. An increasing number of people, all of them generally outside of Washington and not associated with Wall Street, clearly have some strong positive values and a real commitment to achieving reform through "many small actions". What this group has lacked is a means of communicating and orchestrating itself on a scale sufficient to demand respect from politicians and corporation. The Internet now provides such a vehicle--and as the Internet explodes from 3.5M people worldwide to 3.5B people worldwide, in the next ten years, I am convinced that Cultural Creatives may finally come into their own as a new form of global political party. Cultural Creatives would sign the Kyoto Treaty (and know what it is); Cultural Creatives would demand a 100% increase--from a half-penny a dollar to a full penny a dollar--in America's foreign diplomatic and humanitarian assistance budget--and Cultural Creatives could conceivably give the Republican Party a real beating in the next Congressional elections if President Bush persists in breaking his campaign vow on reducing carbon emissions. A peaceful revolution in our national agenda may truly be a near-term reality.

This is not a book where a summary can do it justice. It needs to be experienced at an individual level and ideally also at a community level, where it could be understood and accepted as a common point of reference for individual choosing to live "in relation" to one another and to the world, at a level much higher and more satisfying than our current arrangements. When this book makes it to the best-seller list, America will have matured and there will be hope for our children's future quality of life.

Cultural Creative Overreach
By J. Grattan
The authors, through surveys and interviews conducted over a number of years, have identified three primary subcultures in the U.S.: Traditionals, Moderns, and Cultural Creatives. The authors focus on the Creatives: who they are, and their current and hoped-for potential impacts on the broader culture. Of particular interest to the authors is the impact of Creatives on the issue of ecological sustainability.
The authors regard half of adults in America (100 million) as Moderns. They generally accept the constantly changing, materialistic culture operated and promoted by big business. Much of modern culture seems to be value-free as it revolves around science, technology, growth, speed, and efficiency. The marketplace has largely taken over the lives of moderns: it unabashedly breaks community ties and, in essence, defines people through their consumption and employment. Moderns range from advantaged business executives to the lower middle class adversely affected by globalizing business strategies.
Traditionals, on the other hand, have been largely bypassed by modernism. The 48 million traditionals tend to be older and rural-based with low incomes and limited education and are a group in decline. Their culture is based on time-worn, shared community values and is often orally transmitted to future generations. Traditionals are appealed to by affluent elements of both business and social conservatives, although many traditionals are not pro-business or anti-environment.
The principal contention of the authors is that since the 1960s, 50 million Americans have shifted their "worldview, values, and way of life" sufficiently to form a distinct subculture: the Cultural Creatives. They are defined by both disenchantment with the materialism and fragmentation of modernism and an interest in personal growth, authenticity, and experience. A "core" element of 24 million adults dominated by women and consisting of a variety of artists, professionals, alternative health-care providers, and feminists are oriented toward personal growth and spirituality. Creatives, more broadly, have only an average interest in spirituality and person-centered values and are more focused on the environment and broader social issues.
The authors suggest that the Creatives arose from the civil rights and anti-war movement of the 60s and such movements as feminism and environmentalism. Those movements succeeded partly because Americans were forced to confront the fact that American "principles of general equality, personal freedom, justice, civil rights, and representative democracy" were being unfairly applied. The authors contend that those movements are having an impact far beyond visible leaders and supporters by feeding the longings and hopes of the greater population. More recent Creatives reject large institutions, both social and political, and have turned to New Ageism, holistic approaches, and developing and understanding one's self.
A primary agenda of the authors, beyond identification of social groups, is to press for the need of redirecting the economy and the broader culture in directions that will sustain the environment. The recommendations of several environmental experts include such measures as increasing efficiency, decreasing waste, recycling both natural and man-made materials, and stopping the destruction of Nature. One of the more interesting ideas is the recycling of durable products, where durable products are leased, instead of being owned, with businesses being required to take back and recycle their products. Of course, current reality is for businesses to pass the consequences of environmental destruction onto the public. Interestingly, businesses have arisen to supply the alternative needs of Cultural Creatives in such areas as organic foods, various self-help or experiential endeavors, etc. Of course, some resent the intrusion of business principles in a movement that rejects greed and profit. Resentment or not, these businesses have had an imperceptible impact on the general direction of the business community.
The authors are optimistic that the advent of Cultural Creatives bodes well for "an evolutionary surge to a new level" of cultural development and economic transformation where ecological sustainability has become a reality. However, the authors acknowledge that the growth of the Creative subculture is barely recognized, even among themselves. The various media underreport their activities and their social influence. For one, as stated, many Creatives are simply unseen. Secondly, the successes of earlier movements in integrating schools, registering voters, limiting nuclear arms, and setting environmental standards have made those agendas old news. And thirdly, as the authors indicate, advertiser-driven bias is a factor in news coverage. It's hard to conceive of a group flying below the radar having much public influence.
In addition, the authors applaud the eschewing of politics and pressure groups by Creatives. They point out that involvement in the political process often involves compromises or the watering down of agendas, which is anathema to Creatives. But the authors do concede that many activists believe that "political protest is what really counts in changing society." The authors also contend that Creatives "are no more liberal or conservative than most Americans." Yet it is acknowledged that the Creatives "reject the intolerance and narrowness of social conservatives and the Religious Rights." It would seem that any group that would attempt to limit the prerogatives of big business would have to do so from the left. Of course, a central view of the authors is that the Creatives will infiltrate the hearts and minds of Americans and thereby indirectly achieve their agenda: "concerns for the planet, for ecology, and for spirituality will become as normal and natural as motherhood and apple pie."
There seems to be a lot to question about this book. There is really no hard-core evidence presented that convinces the reader that there are 50 million Cultural Creatives. And even if so, their inward turn, their individual pursuits, and their apolitical stance make society-wide transformations, led by Creatives, seem unlikely. The U.S. culture and politics have made a rightward turn over the last decade. Again, where are the Creatives and what is their political influence? Despite their optimism, in the end, the authors see the U.S. as "muddling through" the excesses of modernism. It may even be that instead of shifting towards the Creatives, Moderns need to develop sharper and more critical insight into their material and business dominated world.

becoming obvious
By Jonathan G. Curtis
If you dislike modern society, read this book to find out why.

You'll also learn that there are millions who think similarly. You'll read about the three main segments of the population: Traditionals, Moderns, and Cultural Creatives.

We all begin as Traditionals, grow up and become Moderns, and then mature to become Cultural Creatives. When we're Traditionals, we agree with whatever authority figures tell us. When we're Moderns, we agree with whatever society tells us. When we're Cultural Creatives, we rely on our conscience.

American society went through these developmental stages in the 20th century. Americans began the 20th century as Traditionals. After two world wars, Americans became Moderns. The protest movement of the 1960's began the process of creating the Cultural Creatives.

Most Americans remain Moderns, living their lives without concern for the global problems that their lifestyles contribute to. Some Americans remain Traditionals, believing most of what their religion and government tells them. A growing segment of Americans are Cultural Creatives, realizing that wasteful lifestyles contribute to global problems and corrective actions are needed.

The Round House: A Novel, by Louise Erdrich

The Round House won the National Book Award for fiction.

One of the most revered novelists of our time—a brilliant chronicler of Native-American life—Louise Erdrich returns to the territory of her bestselling, Pulitzer Prize finalist The Plague of Doves with The Round House, transporting readers to the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. It is an exquisitely told story of a boy on the cusp of manhood who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a terrible crime that upends and forever transforms his family.

Riveting and suspenseful, arguably the most accessible novel to date from the creator of Love Medicine, The Beet Queen, and The Bingo Palace, Erdrich’s The Round House is a page-turning masterpiece of literary fiction—at once a powerful coming-of-age story, a mystery, and a tender, moving novel of family, history, and culture.

Amazon.com Review
Likely to be dubbed the Native American To Kill a Mockingbird, Louise Erdrich’s moving, complex, and surprisingly uplifting new novel tells of a boy’s coming of age in the wake of a brutal, racist attack on his mother. Drawn from real-life statistics about racially inspired attacks on our country’s reservations, this tale is forceful but never preachy, thanks in large part to Erdrich’s understated but glorious prose and her apparent belief in the redemptive power of storytelling. --Sara Nelson

Review
“Wise and suspenseful…Erdrich’s voice as well as her powers of insight and imagination fully infuse this novel…She writes so perceptively and brilliantly about the adolescent passion for justice that one is transported northward to her home territory.” (Elizabeth Taylor, Chicago Tribune)

“Erdrich has given us a multitude of narrative voices and stories. Never before has she given us a novel with a single narrative voice so smart, rich and full of surprises as she has in The Round House…and, I would argue, her best so far.” (NPR/All Thing's Considered)

“THE ROUND HOUSE is filled with stunning language that recalls shades of Faulkner, García Márquez and Toni Morrison. Deeply moving, this novel ranks among Erdrich’s best work, and it is impossible to forget.” (USA Today)

“Emotionally compelling…Joe is an incredibly endearing narrator, full of urgency and radiant candor…the story he tells transforms a sad, isolated crime into a revelation about how maturity alters our relationship with our parents, delivering us into new kinds of love and pain.” (Ron Charles, Washington Post)

“The novel showcases her [Erdrich’s] extraordinary ability to delineate the ties of love, resentment, need, duty and sympathy that bind families together…[a] powerful novel.” (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times)

“A gripping mystery with a moral twist: Revenge might be the harshest punishment, but only for the victims. A-” (Entertainment Weekly)

“Moving, complex, and surprisingly uplifting…likely to be dubbed the Native American TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD” (Parade, Fall's Best Books)

“Erdrich never shields the reader or Joe from the truth…She writes simply, without flourish.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)

“An artfully balanced mystery, thriller and coming-of-age story…this novel will have you reading at warp speed to see what happens next.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

“Erdrich’s bittersweet contemplation of love and friendship, morality and generativity…result in a tender, tough coming-of-age tale.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

“A powerful human story…By boring deeply into one person’s darkest episode, Erdrich hits the bedrock truth about a whole community.” (New York Times Book Review)

“Haunting…a bittersweet coming-of-age tale…tender but unsentimental and buoyed by subtle wit” (People)

“THE ROUND HOUSE is a stunning piece of architecture. It is carefully, lovingly, disarmingly constructed. Even the digressions demand strict attention.” (Newsday)

“One of the most pleasurable aspects of Erdrich’s writing…is that while her narratives are loose and sprawling, the language is always tight and poetically compressed…In the end there’s nothing, not the arresting plot or the shocking ending of THE ROUND HOUSE, that resonates as much as the characters.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“Joe may be one of Erdrich’s best-drawn characters; he’s conflicted, feisty one moment, scared and disappointed the next. THE ROUND HOUSE will inevitably draw comparisons to Harper Lee’s TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD…” (Miami Herald)

“A sweeping, suspenseful outing from this prizewinning, generation-spanning chronicler of her Native American people, the Ojibwe of the northern plains...a sumptuous tale.” (Elle)

“Erdrich threads a gripping mystery and multilayered portrait of a community through a deeply affecting coming-of-age novel.” (Karen Holt, O, the Oprah Magazine)

“A stunning and devastating tale of hate crimes and vengeance…Erdrich covers a vast spectrum of history, cruel loss, and bracing realizations. A preeminent tale in an essential American saga.” (Donna Seaman, Booklist, Starred Review of THE ROUND HOUSE)

“The story pulses with urgency as she [Erdrich] probes the moral and legal ramifications of a terrible act of violence.” (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review of THE ROUND HOUSE)

“Erdrich skillfully makes Joe’s coming-of-age both universal and specific…the story is also ripe with detail about reservation life, and with her rich cast of characters, Erdrich provides flavor, humor and depth. Joe’s relationship with his father, Bazil, a judge, has echoes of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.” (Library Journal, Starred Review of THE ROUND HOUSE)

“Riveting…One of Erdrich’s most suspenseful novels.... It vividly portrays both the deep tragedy and crazy comedy of life.” (BookPage, Cover/Feature Review)

“Each new Erdrich novel adds new layers of pathos and comedy, earthiness and spiritual questing, to her priceless multigenerational drama. THE ROUND HOUSE is one of her best -- concentrated, suspenseful, and morally profound.” (Jane Ciabattari, Boston Globe)

“Louise Erdrich’s prose is spare, precise, smooth as polished stone. Her books are rich with literary muscle.” -Austin American-Statesman (Austin American-Statesman)

“The story draws the reader unstoppably page by page.” (Seattle Times)

“While Erdrich is known as a brilliant chronicler of the American Indian experience, her insights into our family, community, and spiritual lives transcend any category.” (Reader's Digest)

“Poignant and surprisingly funny, it’s the acclaimed writer’s best book yet.” (O, the Oprah Magazine, "Our Favorite Reads of 2012")

From the Back Cover

National Book Award Winner

One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a woman living on a reservation in North Dakota is attacked. The details of the crime are slow to surface as Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and reluctant to relive or reveal what happened, either to the police or to her husband, Bazil, and thirteen-year-old son, Joe. In one day, Joe's life is irrevocably transformed. He tries to heal his mother, but she will not leave her bed and slips into an abyss of solitude. Increasingly alone, Joe finds himself thrust prematurely into an adult world for which he is ill prepared.

While his father, who is a tribal judge, endeavors to wrest justice from a situation that defies his efforts, Joe becomes frustrated with the official investigation and sets out with his trusted friends, Cappy, Zack, and Angus, to get some answers of his own. Their quest takes them first to the Round House, a sacred space and place of worship for the Ojibwe. And this is only the beginning.

Written with undeniable urgency, and illuminating the harsh realities of contemporary life in a community where Ojibwe and white live uneasily together, The Round House is a brilliant and entertaining novel, a masterpiece of literary fiction. Louise Erdrich embraces tragedy, the comic, a spirit world very much present in the lives of her all-too-human characters, and a tale of injustice that is, unfortunately, an authentic reflection of what happens in our own world today.

The Round House is a good read. It is hard to say I enjoyed the book because of the subject matter. But the subject matter needs to be told and talked about. I needed to keep reading this story because the young boy, Joe, age 13, who told the story. The author did a great job of letting us into the feelings of Joe after the tragedy that befalls their family. His close knit extended family, friends and community are vital to his coping with this tragedy. I also have a better picture of what the Native American has had to endure since the white man took over their land and pushed them onto reservations. I would highly recommend reading this book.

"My father read local history, `and the white man appeared and drove them down into the earth'...an observation of the truth."
By Mary Whipple
Author Louise Erdrich, a member of the Chippewa (Ojibwa) nation, here writes one of her most powerful and emotionally involving novels. Though it starts as a crime story on the reservation, it quickly becomes an intense search for justice on all levels. It is also an examination of the lives of her characters, both old and young, as they face the challenges of reservation life. Their lives, as she shows in this novel, are seriously restricted by 1988, when this novel's action takes place, and any Native American who wants to honor the "old ways" on the reservation must now survive on infertile lands which cannot support him. Their culture has been seriously compromised by the arrival of Catholic missionaries who have weaned them away from their myths and traditions. Significantly, legal jurisdiction over crimes involving Native Americans now involves tribal officials, state police, and even the FBI.

In a powerful opening scene, filled with symbols and portents, thirteen-year-old Antone Basil Coutts (Joe), only child and namesake of Judge Coutts and his wife Geraldine, is helping his father to pull tiny seedlings from cracks in the foundation of their house, awaiting Geraldine's return from her office. When she finally arrives at home, she is almost unrecognizable, so badly beaten she can hardly see, reeking of gasoline and so traumatized by rape and other crimes that she has become mute. Young Joe knows that it will be up to him and his father to identify who has done this. They begin to study his father's old cases searching clues.

Joe is still a child, however, and though his empathetic father wants to protect him as much as possible, Joe becomes obsessed with getting his mother "back," determined to find and punish the rapist on his own. These tensions add drama and meaning to the novel, and Joe's contacts with others, both in his family and outside it, expand the scope. The sweat lodge ceremony is described, the extortion of elderly Indians by a white-owned supermarket on Indian land is detailed, the raucous and sexy (and hilarious) talk of elderly family members is recorded, the "flirting" of a stripper living with Joe's uncle is tension-filled and emotional, the appearance of ghosts to Joe, and the efforts of a local priest, a former soldier injured in Lebanon in 1983, are all described to powerful effect, keeping the interest and involvement of the reader at high pitch.

As in her other novels, Erdrich provides a sense of continuity by including characters from other books in this one - including the priestly Nanapush (from Tracks), who was an inspiration to Mooshum, thought now to be one hundred six years old in this novel. Mooshum, whose story is told here, was also a main character in The Plague of Doves, a book which also includes Judge Antone Basil Coutts, father of this novel's main character Joe, and Corwin Peace, father of Joe's friend Zach. By repeating these characters through successive generations, Erdrich provides a genealogy and sense of history which add to the sense of time and place, and highlight the changes, not all of them good, taking place within the community. The novel, one of Erdrich's best, will keep serious readers totally engaged with its sensitive descriptions and insights, even as those interested in just a "good story" will celebrate the action, excitement, and the issues it raises.

Amazing Book
By The Book Wheel
I started reading The Round House by Louise Erdrich because it topped so many "Best of 2012″ lists. The story is about a young Native American teenager, Joe, who sets out to solve the mystery behind his mother's brutal attack. I was drawn into the book immediately, but at first I wasn't sure that it was going to live up to the hype. The story builds very slowly but then barrels toward the ending at lightning speed. I was so engrossed that I finished the book in the wee hours of the morning and had no idea how long I had been reading.

This book is a work of fiction, so I am not entirely sure how historically accurate it is, but I am willing to bet that it is all true. The author's grandfather was a tribal chairman, both of her parents taught at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and her late husband was the director of Dartmouth College Native American Studies Program. I was (as I always am upon reading these types of historical recollections) horrified at the treatment of the Native Americans at the hands of the "white" men. The book is punctuated with dreams, stories and other tribal traditions that I found almost more interesting than the story itself. Louise Erdrich did a wonderful job illustrating various traditions and costumes, which no doubt came from direct observation.

I may need to take a day off from reading after finishing this one. It is a story that will stick with you throughout the years and I expect I will be thinking about this one for a long time to come.

(Fun fact: The author owns an independent bookstore, Birchmark Books, in Minneapolis!)

Review

"An important American contribution to the study of narrative theory."―Choice

"What I appreciate most in Chatman's study are the problem-solving activities and ambitions: again and again, he proves capable of defining areas to investigate (the borders between narrative and other temporal genres, for example, the typography of plots, the distinctive features of foregrounding and backgrounding) and of discussing narrative in terms of problems and solutions. When I opened the Chatman volume, 1read the blurb first: 'A judicious and well-informed book, Story and Discourse should become the standard guide to narrative and to modern thinking about narrative.' The blurb is right."―Gerald Prince, MLN

Rhetoric and Narrative
By Adirondack Views
Chatman's book has been around for a while, but it is still probably the best summary of structuralist narrative theory out there. Chatman makes the very important connection beetween narrative theory and its rhetorical effects on audience. His treatment of the construction of time in narrative summarizes several other prominent narrative theorists, but his terminology is perhaps the most useful. His clear presentation of the distinction between "story" and "discourse" (often called "l'histoire" and "recit" after Genette) and the linking of discourse to rhetorical theory is perhaps the book's most useful feature. Chatman, whose early works included a treatise on poetic meter, is known primarily as a film theorist, but his work analyzes narrative in many media and in many forms. I have used this book as an introduction to narrative theory in my classes.

very useful
By Picky Consumer
This is a terrifically useful book and is quite well known in graduate student circles. I came across it randomly at a bookstore when I was searching for a good introduction to literary theory and basic concepts. This book was clear and insightful and Chatman's presentation has since become the anchor around which I was able to read and digest all the other books that came after it. If you're looking for a 'way into' literary theory concepts, this one will be very helpful.

The title, story and discourse - refers to the basic distinction literary theorists make between a story (chronological set of events) and its narration (chronology can be manipulated to produce various rhetorical effects such as suspense, etc).

Useful for analyzing written and film narratives
By Gideon Haberkorn
This book offers, for me, the most understandable model of a narrative I've read so far. Chatman offers helpful concepts for analyzing both written and film narratives. He tries to create a synthesis of all narrative theory before his book, and he does a very good job. Instead of getting lost in a collection of different approaches, you actually find yourself connecting them all, seeing where they fit together.
Among all the books on narratology and narrative analysis I've read, this is the one most helpful not only for analyzing film narratives but also written narratives (although I would always recommend you also read "Narratology: An Introduction", "Narrative Fiction" and perhaps Bordwell and Thompson's " Film Art : An Introduction", if you want to focus especially on films).
This book and the way Chatman dissects the narrative are also interesting for people more interested in writing than in analysis: I believe the parts Chatman splits the narrative into resemble very closely those writers use in putting one together. So this book may actually help writers gain new insights into what they are doing instinctively.
First and foremost, however, it is a very useful book for the student and scholar of literature.

A bunch of Aussies have spent the day at the beach. They wind up in one blokes backyard, where the barbie is firedup and loaded with grub steaks and veg and such. Later, over a cold drink, one bloke starts telling stories. They are some of the best know and best loved stories in the world; stories that have been told on every continent on earth; stories that have been circling the world for 2,000 years. They are stories about the carpenter who changed history as he traveled the Outback with his mates. This time those stories are retold in real, fair dinkum, Aussie English. With its own Australian take on In the beginning..., The Aussie Bible starts off with its worldknow and disarmingly friendly, Gday! Then sets out retelling tales in a manner and style that will have you reading, and sometimes laughing, out loud. From A Gigantic Picnic (The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes) to an Aussiestyle Psalm 23 to the Glossary specially lengthened for the Yanks, The Aussie Bible is a smashhit, pageflipper for all ages that has already sold over 110,000 copies worldwide.

Hilarious, or blasphemous?
By Lyddy Joshua
Who'd ever guess that the "Aussie's" would ever promote their own Bible? Well now its been done, and I found it to be a very enjoyable read.

Kel Richards has done a great job putting the gospel into an Australian setting, using typical Aussie phrases. Every time I pick it up it brings a smile to my face. True, it can never be a study Bible, although the wording of some of the verses did on occasion enlighten me.

Some have expressed concern that the book is blasphemous. In my opinion, it isn't. It is a fairly accurate expression of how Jesus would speak, had he been a true-blue Aussie. Not on one occasion did it ever question His divinity or integrity. Perhaps there are hints of disrespect to certain figures, like when the prophetess Anna is called an old duck, but God or Jesus were never slighted.

If you're not an Australian, in the back of the book is a reference for particular words/phrases that will help you to understand what has been said. A very funny book!

Good Book
By A Customer
It's a good book and has lots of funny Australian slang in it. I like the glossary in the back because it helps define what it means so that you'll understand. I've read the whole thing twice. The only thing wrong with it is it's too short. I ordered the second book, More Aussie Bible, and I'm excited about it. I think he did a good job, including random parables, scripture, and Psalm 23.

Perfect for Aussie friends and "rellies"
By Maggie Jarpey
The Swiss reviewer convinced me to buy this book because I liked her other reviews. I was not disappointed. It is certainly not blasphemous. It presents the story told in the four gospels faithfully. But it's fun! How can you not smile when you read about the angel Gabriel telling Mary, "You are a very special sheila, Mary. God has His eye on you." This book is a very cool way to "witness" to an Aussie or to help a new-believer Aussie get into the Word of God. The laughs it produces will never be irreverent, because the author was indeed reverent toward God. But he has some fun with Aussie-speak, and, as someone who was born an Aussie and has beloved relatives there, I was thrilled to find this book. I bought seven copies to mail to Australia!

This is a disappointment
By R.G. Edmonson
I always assumed that 'for Dummies' meant for beginners, novices, rookies. This book is for the intermediate level web designer who's willing to make the software investment to go pro. I stretched the budget to get my domain name and web hosting. The book devotes many pages to the use of Adobe Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Photoshop, and barely mentions using content management systems like the one I get from my host. Those three Adobe products would cost me another $1,000 - and don't get me wrong, they're excellent, but I can't justify the expense. I am a beginner who only want one website that looks good and runs well. If you're like me, find a different book.

Good for beginner web designers using Adobe products
By Blake Hutchinson
I give this book 3 stars. The book is good for those starting out with web design and development using Adobe products, Dreamweaver primarily. I used to work with Dreamweaver. It's an excellent WYSIWYG. However, I wouldn't recommend this book for those who want to learn how to manually code in HTML, HTML5, CSS, CSS3, PHP, ActionScript, etc. as it just skims the surface of coding in those languages. Twelve years ago I learned Dreamweaver 3 with Dreamweaver 3 Hands-on-Training (2nd Edition), which was more hands-on with projects to do. While it's good to know Dreamweaver, it's much better to know how to hand code HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and so on. This book may be good for designers, just not so much for budding developers who want to learn how to code by hand. I got a refund for my Kindle copy as it wasn't what I was looking for.

UPDATE: For those who want to learn how to hand code HTML5, CSS3, and basic JavaScript, I highly recommend Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Web Graphics. The Kindle version is currently about $10 cheaper; I just don't know if it has an index or not. However, I refer to the book every now and then and the index is a time saver. Highly recommended!

With that said, it doesn't go into the AUDIO or VIDEO tags, but there are books and websites which do, so this is just a minor quibble.

It really is all-in-one
By Greg Foreman
Wow - there's a lot packed into Building Websites All-in-One for Dummies. This book provides a fairly comprehensive survey of the topics important to those creating modern websites. If you're a novice web designer/developer who's building a reference library and looking for a book from the For Dummies series to add to your collection, then this is the one. It touches on all aspects of the process, teaching you all the things you may not have known you needed to know. If you're just looking to put up a simple website and nothing beyond that, then steer clear of this and go find a free theme on Google Sites or WordPress instead (actually, this book even has a chapter about WordPress). But, if you are becoming a serious hobbyist or are looking to start a career in the field, then this book will cover all the bases and introduce (in varying levels of detail) the areas you need to focus on in order to learn to build professional-looking websites from scratch.

Value is also here for the experienced website builder looking to get up to date on HTML5, CSS3, and Adobe CS6 (a little on Photoshop and Fireworks, and a lot on Dreamweaver). Also, those who manage the development of websites or who purchase web design/development services from someone else will benefit from the this book since you will learn the language of those you're managing. And, if you are looking to incorporate e-commerce or social media into your existing site, you will find useful info here. The experienced web developer who's mainly worked in the back-end coding aspect of website creation and who's looking to learn more on the upfront design aspects or what's involved in launching and maintaining a site will find several informative chapters on those topics as well.

Most topics get fewer than 3 of 4 chapters of coverage, so what this book is not is a detailed reference on any one subject. You won't become a PHP or Javascript expert after reading the chapters that cover those subjects, but you will gain enough understanding of the topics so you know if you need to purchase a book or take an online course that will give a deeper dive. I think that is what the authors intended, so this is not a negative.

This is all based on what I've gleaned from my initial slow scan through the book while reading several chapters and dog-earing pages along the way to mark places I'm anxious to return to. If I have any complaint so far it's that the companion website for the book is a little lacking. There is a cheatsheet of useful info and links, as well as downloadable code examples, but I guess I've gotten spoiled by some other books that have really good companion sites (e.g., HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites). However, I think this is consistent with other books in the For Dummies series, so this really doesn't detract from the book.

Once I've had more time to fully explore this massive reference, I will return to update this description if my opinion has changed. For now, though, it gets 5 stars from me.
