About the Author
Jim Hayes is a co-founder of the Fiber Optic Association and current President. He has a degree in Physics and Astronomy from Vanderbilt University. Jim has been involved in fiber optics since he was introduced to the technology by researchers at Bell Labs in 1978. In 1980, he co-founded FOTEC, the fiber optic test equipment company that was acquired by Fluke in 2001. He began training techs in fiber optics in 1982 and started Fiber U, a fiber optic training conference in 1993. In 1995, along with a dozen Fiber U instructors from many companies in the fiber optic business, schools and professional trainers, he was a co-founder of the Fiber Optic Association. Jim is the author of 8 books on fiber optics and cabling, hundreds of articles, editor of the FOA monthly newsletter and has been a columnist for Electrical Contractor Magazine since 1999.

Congruent influence based on understanding and flexibility

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and the Enneagram are two very useful psychological models for understanding personalities and for change. Anne Linden, who was the first to have combined the two systems in one book, wrote the Foreword. The present book has advanced much further in helping us to understand the diversity of the nine types of personalities and teaching us to flexibly match such differences with the powerful attitudes, patterns and skills of NLP. Part I is based on NLP. But it is not just a regurgitation of the key concepts. The author reflects real understanding and creatively and lucidly applies NLP to selling or congruent influence. Part II gives succint descriptions of the Enneagram types. The Identification Tips, Dominant NLP Patterns, Rapport Tips and Selling Tips for each type are unique features. Part III integrates NLP, the Enneagram with classical selling techniques. "31 Assumptions of Personality Selling" lists the key concepts of the whole book. Very interesting and useful. "Different people respond differently to the same thing, and the same thing can cause different responses in different people." (pp.29, 284) Personality Selling succeeds very well in coaching us to respond effectively to such differences.

Good Straight-Forward Tools

I just took a 3 week intensive Practitioner's Certification training course in California with Robert Dilts and I found this book to be really helpful with "people reading". I found some information we really didn't have time to go into in CA in this book. It is written cleanly and clearly on subjects that can be complex. I recommend it to anyone studying NLP for any reason.

By taking the focus away from the theoretical premises of free markets and allowing criticism based on their practical effects on human life, while still recognizing the amazing good they are, the author strikes a balance between those who would turn to some form of a socialistic economic system in order to achieve greater social justice and those who believe that markets can do no wrong. The author is talented at creating new perspectives from which to view issues related to markets and social justice. In addition, he does an excellent job at making a case for legitimate (yet still limited) government involvement in markets by using arguments that most conservatives would agree with. From a theological perspective, however, the author tends at times to point to markets as the source of some social ills that actually have their source not in market mechanisms, but in the presence of sin and evil in the world. Overall, the book is an excellent and balanced analysis of free markets and their effects on social justice. It is not easy bedtime reading, however. Be prepared to take quite a bit of time chewing on the author's ideas.

A Good Read!

Cass R. Sunstein's book is a serious piece of scholarship about very engaging legal and social issues concerning economics and law. The book derives both strengths and weaknesses from its beginnings as a series of lectures presented from 1990 to 1995. Each chapter presents a thoughtful thesis, but not all chapters link together in a clearly understandable manner. However, a reader who is prepared to put in the required effort, will gain a wealth of thought-provoking material. We at getAbstract recommend this book to anyone who misses pure intellectual challenge. Lawyers, policy makers, and economists are most likely to appreciate it.

Poetic sensitivity to life

First of all, let me say that "Mondo" is a beautiful collection of stories that reveals the beauty of imagination, the greatness of a child's curiosity and the magic that the child has to show us who have lost our connection with these gifts. It is a reminder of our need for balance, poetry and faith in the human race. I recommend this book, along with the almost 50 other books from this author, without hesitation and with enthusiasm. Beyond speaking for myself, students whom I've taught are captivated by his writing style, stories and messages - in Mondo and in other collections.

Le Cl�zio's books give us insight into the magic of life and our connectedness to others and natures. Each piece that comprises Le Cl�zio's works dialogues with each other without being repetitive, thus underlying similarities and differences between cultures. I would hope that as society, we have "advanced" to a point where we can appreciate the poetry of the world and the beauty of human souls, the magic of human imagination, that isn't to be confused with sweetness or naivety.

Beyond doubt, Le Cl�zio is a writer who deserves to be read and who was chosen by the Nobel Academy because Le Cl�zio is an "author of new departures, poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy, explorer of a humanity beyond and below the reigning civilization" that our world is in need of today. Furthermore, Le Cl�zio was the honored guest at the Louvre in 2011-2012, which he accepted in order to challenge the Louvre to bring in cultures and pieces that have not and still do not have their "place" inside such hierarchical institutions, cultures and pieces who have a voice, histories and messages that are essential to us if we wish to claim being or becoming global and "civilized".

Le Cl�zio is far from a "rich bourgeois". He was born into WW 2 without food and luxuries. He was raised by his mother and grandmother because his father was serving as doctor to people, irregardless of their background, in British Guiana and then in Cameroon and Nigeria. His family, since the outbreak of the French Revolution, lived without in order to promote human rights and to abolish slavery, refuse colonial lifestyles. While a child, Le Cl�zio turned to books as his reaction to the war-filled society surrounding him. He served as a teacher in Thailand for his military service and lived amongst the people. He is not a rich outsider viewing the state of the world. He is a witness who "reports" while remaining a humble member of society who shares and learns from others without placing himself above them.

He lives inside the societies from where he studies their histories and cultures as well as listening to oral histories and testimonies of daily life. His entire work the explores humanity that is shared, and often times unknown so that we as readers can contemplate the reality of others: he encourages humanity to think - he is "engag�" to promote human understanding and dialogues between cultures and across generations and political boundaries. Examples of this outsider and insider experience can be observed with his direct experience with Aroussyrian nomads of Southern Morocco and with natives and non-natives in 20th century Nigeria; the testimonies of inhabitants of Vanuatu and the cultural and spiritual lessons while living with Emberas and Waunans Amerindians in Panama; the fictive historical slave narrations in Kilwa and Mauritius and the fictionalized new items and histories regarding numerous immigrants in Northern Africa, Nigeria, Israel and Palestine, France, England, Mexico, Oceania, Korea and the United States. the who lived

Perhaps some may not know that Le Cl�zio, after earning money from a poorly paid translation job in Mexico during the late 60s, shared life with the Emberas Indians in Panama, lived inside their society from 1970 - 1974 ... not owning anything. He has said (and I am translating from "La F�te Chant�e":
"I had the opportunity to share life in the Darien with the Amerindian people, the Emeras and their cousins, the Waunanas in the Darien, Panama, and experience that changed my entire life, my ideas on the world, art, my way of being with others, walking, eating, sleeping, even until my dreams. I learned about the vanity linked with consumerism, vain because the heat, humidity and the insects in this forest made them useless."

His books will remain on shelves for decades to come, and Mondo is but a small illustration of the worlds that Le Cl�zio invites the reader to experience, contemplate and explore.

When it works, it's great

As the fourth reviewer coming to this book, I find two reviews of almost fulsome praise and one of utter condemnation. I found the book not quite as good as the first two claim and not nearly as bad as the third declares.

Almost any short-story collection, which this book is, shows some unevenness between the strongest stories and the weakest. That's true here. The qualities most praised--lyrical style, rich and lush imagery, the fresh outlook of a child on the world, an implied criticism of a mechanistic and regimented "civilization"--are most evident in the first three stories. They are beautiful works of imagining a child's ability to relate to and fit into an unspoiled world permeated with air and light. LeClezio can evoke effects of light as only a few painters can. In the next four stories (there are eight) LeClezio tries harder to impose symbolism on this world of imagination, and the result is murky and unresolved although the nature imagery remains poetically luminous.

The eighth story, "The Shepherds," seems out of place in the collection. Here the relation of children to nature is that of a constant battle of survival where the dangers include scorpions, snakes, wild dogs, and starvation. Animals may become friends, like the fox Mim--or they may be killed for food. Since the focal character, the boy Gaspar who wanders into this primitive world at the beginning of the story, exits from it to return to civilization at the end, we do not know the fate of the little band of children who remain. We are a long way from the lovely dream world of "Mondo" or "Lullaby."

A final note: As in the case of Gaspar, the modern world of civilization, of "regulation fools with their regulation rules" (AC/DC), lurks almost always in the background of these stories and reasserts itself in the end.

LeClezio is a high risk/high reward writer. His successes are spectacular and may deeply affect how his reader sees the world. But his success rate is not 100%.

Great Story

This book was great, has some very deep and interesting stories especially dealing with childhood, and how children see the world. I read this book in French originally for an upper division French course at my University and loved it so I purchased the English version as well. I was absolutely shocked and appalled to see that hate rant that passed for a review as the only other review. Truly one should not listen to this person for they are ignorant and that should not affect your decision to buy this book. This book is great for both children and adults, and should not be blanket attacked by irrational words of hatred. This book definitely has some great stories, odd at times, but touching as well. Mondo is simply about a boy who never had a family and ends up learning all of the lessons of life through friends he has earned but remains to never truly get a family.

I read Jon Acuff's book Quitter in the spring. It was an interesting book that had many pointers that I could use. Maybe people referred to Dan Miller's book as having more substantial and sequential instructions on how to accomplish your goals. So I got his book next. First lets be clear. This book is not a magic wand or lottery ticket. Its not going to automatically give you what you want. What the book does accomplish is to help you realize why you aren't happy with your job and how to determine your innate potential.

Miller destroys the myth that work sucks, everybody hates their job and everyone is looking forward to retirement. That was the way I was raised. It was the way my parents were raised, my grandparents, we can go on and on. Reading the book helped me understand my feelings better. Then it went beyond that. He does give you guidance on how to go about doing what you love.

I have to disagree with the gentleman who gave the book a 1 star because he "couldn't quit his 6 figure job because...." and Dan Miller doesn't give him a solution. Its not really his job to help you figure out how to make as much money and pay off your debt. Its really his job to help you realize what you really want to do and how to go about getting that job. He gives a great example of the ER doctor who wanted to drive trucks. I'm betting he had as much debt and made as much money as the attorney. The ER doctor doesn't quit his job completely and throw away all of his schooling, he worked part time on the weekends in the ER, when he wanted to and spent his week days happily driving a truck.

It really comes down to what do you want to accomplish and what are the steps necessary to do that and this book meets that criteria. So you can spend the rest of your life talking about what you can't do or you can change course and realize what you want to do.

I'm not sure after reading this whether I know what I want to be when I grow up but my job search is reinvigorated and I want to do more to explore my mission on earth. The author definitely inspires positive thinking and a more creative approach to work.

OK, but repeats tried-and-true books

Well, maybe it's because I've read so many other books of this type ... but there's a lot of same ol', here. Interesting, though.

If you -- like us -- are an aficionado of the tried-and-true "What Color is Your Parachute?," there isn't much new, here. One glaring 'error' I see is something a lot of people assume, but is simply not the case (at least nowhere in the real world we and our friends inhabit): if you are an out-of-work professional, you are NOT going to get a job by talking to a manager at a burger joint or with the receptionist (who will not magically summon the hiring manager you need) at company ABC.

The excuse at the burger joint is: "The minute something in your career comes up, you'll be gone." You mean, as opposed to the person who gets enough for a couple of car payments and leaves? What's the difference?

The response at a company's front desk (or, increasingly, at job fairs)? "Apply online for a specific job." Sort of tough to get the insider view, that way. Even when my husband was trying to get OUT of a career, he couldn't find a job in another industry where he was highly qualified. You can't convince the hiring managers you're serious.

Now: having said all that: if this is your first foray into this type of book, go for it. But if you've been at this for years, maybe not so much, or grab the Kindle version and use the TOC to find chapters which will interest you.

About the Author

T. Oweis is the director of the Integrated Water and Land Management Program (IWLMP) at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) (CGIAR Future Harvest Center). He has carried out research into and published extensively on irrigation and water management since the 1980s, fulfilling numerous academic and institutional roles over time.

D. Prinz is an independent consultant in matters concerning irrigation, water management and harvesting, and water & soil conservation. During the course of his career, he has published and lectured extensively on many aspects of rural engineering, with a particular focus on water and land resources development; irrigation, water and soil conservation and water harvesting in agriculture.

A. Hachum is Professor in the Department of Water Resources Engineering, College of Engineering, Mosul University, Iraq and consultant for the Integrated Water and Land Management Program, ICARDA. He has published many articles as well as a number of monographs on the topics of irrigation and water harvesting.
