Best of the series

So who'd have thought that a stormy night and a blushing request would have Austin bedding innocent Rebecca? Or that, after the unspeakably sexy fact, he'd make an honest woman of her? Had the small-town saint led the sinner to salvation? Or would Austin merely give his child a name--and Rebecca everlasting heartache?
I wanted to give it 3 stars but because it is the best in the series, I gave it four. All the brothers and their half-sister get their own story. I've read them all, just not in order. Rebecca's character in THE BEST BRIDE, seemed somewhat stronger then in this one. Also she is in charge of a home for unwanted/orphaned children and can't remember to use birth control! And Austin, who brings his lovers to his home has no condoms anywhere? This just strained my belief somewhat. If you can get over this, the story moves along and develops with a nice pace and likable people.

Pleasant fast read - steamy romance

This book has a very nice flow -- it is a quick read -- very nice characters. The only negative -- I felt that the man (Austin) was a bit too victimized near the end. He insisted on the marriage and then spent a good portion of the rest of the book trying to talk himself out of it... Well the ending was very happy....

Sadly this book is.not on Kindle, I ha to hunt for it in oder to complete he Homeown Heartbreaker series. Austinand Rebecca's story in many ways drags on in places, his mysterious past never totally explained, despite his sharing bits an pieces with Rebecca. The story kept.me glued to tbe pages and aftr reading the rest of the series I had to know his story.

Designers imagine things that don’t yet exist, and then they build them, and then the world changes. You can do this in your own life. You can imagine a career and a life that don’t exist; you can build that future you, and as a result your life will change. If your life is pretty perfect as is, life design can still help you make it an even better version of the life you currently love living.

When you think like a designer, when you are willing to ask the questions, when you realize that life is always about designing something that has never existed before, then your life can sparkle in a way that you could never have imagined. That is, if you like sparkles. It’s your design, after all.

What Do We Know?

In Stanford’s Design Program, we have taught more than a thousand students design thinking and how to design their lives. And we’ll let you in on a secret—no one has ever failed our class. In fact, it’s impossible to flunk. We have more than sixty years of combined teaching experience, and we have taught this approach to high school students, college students, graduate students, Ph.D. students, twenty-somethings, mid-career executives, and retirees wanting an “encore” career.

As teachers, we have always guaranteed our students “office hours for life.” This means that if you take a class from us we are there for you, forever. Period. We’ve had students come back to us over the years since they’ve graduated, and they’ve told us how the tools, ideas, and mind-sets that we teach have made a difference for them. We’re quite hopeful—and, frankly, pretty confident— that these ideas can make a difference for you, too.

But don’t take our word for it. Stanford is a very rigorous place. Though anecdotes are nice, they don’t count for much in academia. To speak authoritatively, you need data. Our class is one of the few design thinking classes that have been scientifically studied and have proved to make a difference for students on a number of important measures. Two doctoral students did their dissertations on the course, and what they found was pretty exciting.2 They found that those who took our class were better able to conceive of and pursue a career they really wanted; they had fewer dysfunctional beliefs (those pesky ideas that hold you back and that just aren’t true) and an increased ability to generate new ideas for their life design (increasing their ideation capability). All�of these measures were “statistically significant,” which, in nongeek-speak, means that the ideas and exercises we lay out in our course and are going to walk you through in this book have been proven effective; they can help you to figure out what you want and show you how to get it.

But let’s be perfectly clear right from the start. Science or no science, this is all highly personal stuff. We can give you some tools, some ideas, some exercises, but we can’t figure it all out for you. We can’t give you your insights, change your perspective, and provide you with nonstop “aha” moments, all in ten easy steps. What we can tell you is that if you actually use the tools and do the life design exercises, you will generate the insights you need to have. Because here’s the big truth: there are many versions of you, and they are all “right.” And life design will help you live into whatever version of you is now playing at the Cineplex. Remember, there are no wrong answers, and we’re not grading you. We will suggest you do some exercises in this book, but there are no answers in the back to tell you how you did. We’ve added a recap of the exercises at the end of each chapter that has them—a Try Stuff box—because we suggest that you, well, try stuff. That’s what designers do. We’re not measuring you against anyone, and you shouldn’t measure yourself against anyone, either. We’re here to co-create with you. Think of us as part of your own personal design team.

In fact, we suggest you go out and get a design team right off the bat—a group of people who will read the book with you and do the exercises alongside you, a collaborative team in which you support one another in your pursuit of a well-designed life. We’ll talk about this more later in the book, and by all means you should feel free to read it on your own first. Many people�think that designers are lone geniuses, working in solitude and waiting for a flash of inspiration to show them the solution to their design problem. Nothing could be further from the truth. There may be some problems, such as the design of a stool or a new set of children’s blocks, that are simple enough to be tackled by an individual, but in today’s highly technical world, almost every problem requires a design team. Design thinking takes this idea even further and suggests that the best results come from radical collaboration. Radical collaboration works on the principle that people with very different backgrounds will bring their idiosyncratic technical and human experiences to the team. This increases the chance that the team will have empathy for those who will use what they are designing, and that the collision of different backgrounds will generate truly unique solutions.

This is proved over and over again in d. school classes at Stanford, where graduate students create teams of business, law, engineering, education, and medical students that come up with breakthrough innovations all the time. The glue that holds these teams together is design thinking, the human-centered approach to design that takes advantage of their different backgrounds to spur collaboration and creativity. Typically, none of the students have any design background when they enroll in our classes, and all of the teams struggle at first to be productive. They have to learn the mind-sets of a designer—especially radical collaboration and being mindful of process. But once that happens, they discover that their abilities as a team far exceed what any individual can do, and their creative confidence explodes. Hundreds of successful student projects and innovative companies, such as D-Rev and Embrace,3 have come from this process, and are proof that collaboration is the way design gets done today.

So be a genius at your life design; just don’t think you have to be one of those lone geniuses.


Think Like a Designer

Before you can do life design, you need to learn to think like a designer. We’ll explain a few simple ways to do this, but first you need to understand one really big point: Designers don’t think their way forward. Designers build their way forward. What does that mean? It means you are not just going to be dreaming up a lot of fun fantasies that have no relationship to the real world—or the real you. You are going to build things (we call them prototypes), try stuff, and have a lot of fun in the process.

Want a career change? This book will help you make that change, but not by sitting around trying to decide what that change is going to be. We’re going to help you think like a designer and build your future, prototype by prototype. We’re going to help you approach your own life design challenges with the same kind of curiosity and the same kind of creativity that resulted in the invention of the printing press, the lightbulb, and the Internet.�

Our focus is mainly on jobs and careers, because, let’s face it, we spend most of the hours of our days, and the days of our lives, at work. Work can be a daily source of enormous joy and meaning, or it can be an endless grind and waste of hours spent trying to white-knuckle our way through the misery of it all until the weekend comes. A well-designed life is not a life of drudgery. You weren’t put on this earth to work eight hours a day at a job you hate until the time comes to die.

That may sound a bit melodramatic, but many people tell us that this is a good description of their lives. And even those who are lucky enough to find a career they love often find that they are frustrated and have a hard time designing a life that is balanced. It’s time to start thinking differently—about everything.

Great for getting unstuck

This book provides a lot of encouraging reframes for people who have encountered failure and are a bit lost as to how to move forward. They offer a different way of living life by redefining success and how to attain it. One of my favorite dysfunctional beliefs they share is "I need to figure out my best possible life, make a plan, and then execute it." What? That's a dysfunctional belief? But that's what I've been doing and what I've been told to do. Make your goals and then a plan of execution. However, it hasn't worked for me. I haven't found success and more importantly happiness by following this advice. The reframe they offer for this dysfunctional belief is "There are multiple great lives and plans within me, and I get to choose which one to build my way forward to next." If you're ready for more happiness, more relationships, less regrets, and more fruit for your labor, you will find unique guidance in this book to get there. Be prepared to unlearn concepts and adopt new ones, engage in personal reflection, and talk to a lot of people! This is not a feel good book, but it offers a guide to follow that if implemented will make you feel better.

A creative twist to old wine in new bottles.

Authors did a good job in creating a new framework to self-exploration. Most important, one can never have enough self-analysis tools in their life toolbox. Unfortunately, the downfall of the book were anecdotes of millennials and people under 40. There was not one example of anyone over 55 or the so called "ENCORE" population.

I find the five mind-sets described in the book are quite powerful tools. In short, (1) To get unstuck, take progressive actionable steps. (2) To identify what these steps are, try to take different perspectives and come up with ideas for trying. The essence is: Action. If stuck, reframe and action again. Life/career is a journey, so focus more on the process instead of the final result.

About the Author
Loren Coleman, M.S.W., has researched the Copycat Effect for more than two decades. Coleman has been an adjunct professor at various universities in New England since 1980 and a senior researcher with the Muskie School for Public Policy. He is currently the primary consultant for the State of Maine's Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative. The author, coauthor, or editor of more than twenty books, including the critically acclaimed work Suicide Clusters, lives in Portland, Maine.

Abominable Snowman

When most people ponder on the "big three" of cryptozoology, they are thinking of the Loch Ness Monsters, Bigfoot, and the Abominable Snowman. Though many assume these beasts to be mythical, a body of intriguing evidence exists for each. Of the three, the Abominable Snowman is the cryptozoological animal longest known and discussed in the West.

The more proper name is Yeti, but most Westerners have been more familiar with the moniker "Abominable Snowman." "Abominable Snowman" is a phrase coined, accidentally, by a Calcutta Statesman newspaper columnist, Henry Newman, in 1921.

It happened when Newman wrote about the 1921 sighting by Lieutenant Colonel (later Sir) C.K. Howard-Bury and his party, who saw dark forms moving about on a twenty-thousand-foot-high snowfield above their location, the Lhapka-La pass on the Tibetan side of the Himalayan mountains, and viewed them through binoculars. This is the first credible Western sighting of what until then had been mostly a shadowy tale (at least to Westerners) of strange, hairy upright creatures in Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim, Mustang, and Nepal. Howard-Bury would later, on September 22, 1921, find footprints "three times those of normal humans" at the site where the dark forms were moving about.

The Sherpas insisted that the prints were those of the metoh-kangmi, as Howard-Bury rendered it. Kang-mi loosely means "snow creature." The metoh part should have been written as met-teh, which translates as "man-sized wild creature."

Newman's mistake was caused in part by Howard-Bury's mistransliteration of the Sherpa word. Howard-Bury did not understand that the Sherpas recognized several types of creatures; on this occasion they had used a generic, not a specific, term. The error was compounded when Newman changed Howard-Bury's metoh-kangmi to metch kangmi, which he explained as a Tibetan word meaning "Abominable Snowman."

In any case, this proved to be a pivotal event in cryptozoological history. As Ivan T. Sanderson wrote, "The result was like the explosion of an atomic bomb." The melodramatic name "Abominable Snowman" spurred gigantic press interest. Newspaper coverage multiplied as more and more expeditions sought to climb Mount Everest.

The true origin of the phrase "Abominable Snowman" has been misrepresented over the years. For example, on a 1992 episode of the television series Unsolved Mysteries, a well-known Irish explorer wrongly claimed that the creature got its name because of its horrible odor.

The real animal behind the name is neither abominable nor a true creature of the snows. These beasts usually appear to live in quiet retreat in the steamy mountain valleys of the Himalayas, using the snowy passes as a way to move from one spot to another, leaving behind huge mysterious footprints. They are not -- contrary to another widespread misunderstanding -- white. And they are not a single creature.

A better generic term for Abominable Snowman is the Sherpa yeti, loosely meaning "that there thing." Yetis are known as huge creatures -- humanoid beasts, covered with thick coats of dark fur with arms, like those of anthropoid apes, which reach down to their knees.

Zuiyo-maru Monster

In April 1977, thirty miles off the coast of Christchurch, New Zealand, the trawler's nets of a Japanese fishing boat, the Zuiyo-maru, snared a huge animal carcass of an unknown origin. The crew hauled the monstrous body out of the ocean onto the deck, and Michihiko Yano, the ship's assistant production manager, measured the creature and took some now-famous photographs. The creature was thirty-three feet long and weighed about four thousand pounds. It had a snakelike head at the end of a long, slender neck, giving it an unwhale-like appearance. Some of the crew thought it was a rotten whale, but others were not so sure. After great difficulty, the stinking Zuiyo-maru Monster was thrown overboard.

Media attention in Japan focused on the plesiosaur-like appearance of the creature. Interest in Sea Serpents rose. Toys were produced of the Zuiyo-maru Monster.

But Yano had taken samples of the "horny fiber" from one of the monster's fins. Tests determined the Zuiyo-maru Monster was a decomposed basking shark, although few today know that part of the story.

Some things you have never heard of...and some things you will wish you hadn't.

Very, very interesting! It has creatures in it that I have never heard of and at my age, being an animal nut, that is really saying a lot! It is lengthy and does cross reference animals so when you see a new chapter it will definitely be about a new creature. Now that is cool.

Good reference for anyone interested in Cryptozoology.

While this book does mention some mythological beings, the existance of a majority of creatures discussed is at least plausible, and there is sufficient evidence to suggest that many may represent animals truly unknown to science.

Along with descriptions, some sighting reports, experiences, and discussion of evidence of unknown creatures, this book presents all animals once thought extinct, elusive, and subsequently proven to exist, or rediscovered. As in the case of the famous Coelacanth, a prehistoric fish thought extinct since the Cretaceous Period but found very much alive in 1938.

Cryptozoology A-Z also sheds light on cases of misidentification and includes many profiles of people involved with Cryptozoololgical studies.

I highly recommend this book for those who wish to learn more about Cryptozoology, the many interesting, monsterous, and bizarre creatures there are, or might be, in our world, and the people who search for them.

Every now and then a novel comes out that tackles the oft-visited 'End Of The World' type premise...Hollywood is no stranger to this arena either. But while novels and movies abound, not many of them really approaches the topic with a vengeance...that is until now. Kudos to Jeremy Robinson for creating not just a terrifying scenario, but doing it with gusto and with such originality.

Crustal Displacement has left the earth in a literal shambles. Warm places are now cold...conversely, cold places are now warm--even hot. One place in particular is the frozen continent of Antarctica--which is frozen no more. Where do the survivors go now? Good question. Fortunately (or maybe not depending how you look at the storyline...) the continent of Antarctica has thawed and is ready to claim--or so we think.

Getting into the mind of characters is almost a lost art-form in the world of novels these days because so few writers do it well (IMO), but Jeremy Robinson has manufactured fictional people who you grow to care about and worry for during such an incredibly horrific time. I want to do my best to help spread the word to those who are of the mindset that if you want action, you can only read authors like Cussler, Ludlum or Rollins. If you like your action big and your stories to be edge-of-your-seat amazing, you honestly OWE it to yourself to pick up a copy of one of his books. Antarktos Rising is not just another spectacular novel, it's an event worth experiencing and definitely a ride worth taking. I'd tell you more, but that would seriously ruin a chunk of the genuine thrills and surprises that await you. If you think that only the best authors come from well established publishing companies...THINK AGAIN...and then go GET THIS BOOK.

Jeremy Robinson is here to stay.

This is my third Jeremy Robinson novel, and he just keeps getting better.

What I like most about this book is the sheer scope of the story. You start off sitting in a frozen Antarctica with a Dr. and his wife, and the next thing you know the whole continent has shifted, the world is in chaos, billions are dead, many entire contries are just...gone, and the surviving great nations are involved in a race to the center of the last feasible hope for humanity: Antarktos.

The problem is, Antarktos has been used as a Last Great Hope by someone else long before the current cataclysm, and those aho are there...well, they aren't real keen on just handing the continent over to the humans.

The writing is tighter in this novel than his previous two, as well, and Mr. Robinson knows how to keep eyeballs glued to the page. I'll admit that I was very much looking forward to this read. I will also say it lived up to my expectations and even surpassed them a smidge.

It is clear to me that Jeremy Robinson is here to stay.

I do have one gripe about the book, and it's the same problem I had with Raising the Past. Once the story was done, I wanted to read more. I know it's a tad cliche, but that's ok. It's true.

Hey, Jeremy...how about writing a little faster, huh? I'm ready for the next one!

My wife and I have just finished Jeremy Robinson's latest novel and just have to give major kudos where kudos is deserved.

Robinson's 3rd novel is fantastic, totally well driven and starkingly like a modern day Edgar Rice Burroughs filled with a solid adventure rush that rivals anything written in this genre as of late. This writer deserves all of the respect - and more - than publishers and bookstores are unfortunately not giving him. We looked everywhere for this authors books and could not find a one in neither Barnes & Noble or Borders.

But thanks once again to this awesome website we were able to not only discover this gifted writer, but get ahold of his books. This was the one that grabbed our interest the most, thus we read first. And from the get-go, Robinson throws the reader into a firsthand account of the climatic weather changing event that changes the earth forever, plunging it into a reawakening filled with biblical beasts and giant men called Nephilim, all culled magnificently from the Bible by this solid author who spends it into a web of multi-layered storylines that thrill and excite the reader from page 1 to the very end.

If you love authors of such wild adventures, like James Rollins and Brian Keene, or a mixture of the two, and S. M. Stirling and Edgar Rice Burroughs, then you are in for a treat!

From colorful locales to fantastic creatures of myth, science, and biblical, with ever-growing and believable cast of characters, Antarktos Rising will most definately take you on a thrilling high-stakes adventure that will surely keep you up into the wee hours of the night.

We look forward to this other author's works. And especially hope for a sequel to this terrific novel.

A Precious Book

Pastor ID shares from the heart a significant portion of his life story, and thru this he also shares substantial wisdom on how to face life's trials and adversities. The book is one part autobiography and one part pastoral sermon - I enjoyed both equally. The wisdom shared is practical, easy to take in, and from his life story, you know it's been tested. I feel encouraged & fortified after having finished it, and have already recommended it to a friend already.

The only point that I found pretty unfair were his comments on food

As a Dutch national but having lived abroad for nearly 30 years (4 of which in London) it was very interesting to read a foreigners take on the Netherlands (NOT Holland, that is only a part of it as the writer points out correctly:-)). Especially the historic background is helping to understand the cultural patchwork the Netherlands have been in the past, and still today. But, I did miss the analysis of why the Dutch are so egalitarian, partly caused by the continuous fight against the sea but also by the fact that the Netherlands was a Republic and largely lacked the hierarchy which was omnipresent in other European countries. Moreover, it was the Republic that ruled the world for about 150 years and royalty was reluctantly accepted. You will never in your life hear the Dutch saying Queen Wilheminian or Queen Julianian times...

The only point that I found pretty unfair were his comments on food. With some 160 Michelin star restaurants, of which twenty 2-star and two 3-star restaurants the Netherlands has a three times higher number of Michelin star restaurants per head of population than the UK; and even street food... not sure with whom Mr. Coates mixed, but I personally was brought up with the healthiest and tastiest kitchens in the world... and so were my friends.. maybe the street food is for tourists ??

All in all, I have a great deal of respect for writers like Mr Ben Coates and Russell Shorto; they make such good analysis of the people who largely created their own land and hence culture, although bold from time to time... we do admit.

like a favorite high school teacher

Recently I finished Bill Bryson’s latest travel book, “Notes from Little Dribbling”. While my much beloved author writes in his usual educational style, like a favorite high school teacher, dear Bill is becoming a bit grumpier in his waning years largely due to the fact that it will never be 1957 again and that his three-year old grandchildren can work a computer better than he can. So as I had just decided that this latest work of his would have been more aptly titled “Bill Bryson’s Great Big Book of Bitching”, along comes Ben Coates’ “Why the Dutch are Different”.

What a wonderful read. Intelligent and jaunty, Coates writes a spot-on description of life as an expat in the Netherlands. Braiding together his personal experiences with history, he presents a though-provoking interpretation of how individuals and events over a vast sweep of time make the Dutch who they are. It’s as if my wish that Bryson would cheer up and write a book about the Netherlands had been granted.

Coates parties at carnival, gazes at antiquities on Museumnacht, sails down the Maas, sings at a war remembrance ceremony, attends a demonstration, and solemnly visits the staging camp for Auschwitz as the backdrop of the book. Then selecting the most influential events and characters that over a vast sweep of time shaped Dutch society, he presents a chronicle of the Netherlands that is comprehensive without being tedious. This is something of a feat for a 287-page book.

As an expat living in the Netherlands myself, some of Coates’ personal experiences made me sigh with delight and recognition. Some of his conclusions were similar to those I had drawn myself over the years about why the Dutch behave the way they do, how the mentality of “You can do what you want to do, as long as you do it our way” ultimately came about (answer = it’s crowded). Other bits literally made me tear up, such as his paragraph describing the liberation of the Netherlands from the Germans in Word War II (which I was reading, strangely enough, while standing in line to board a flight to Munich). And it’s funny. Brilliantly funny. There may the unfortunate repetition of some phrases, such as “…wobbling home after too many Heinekens…”, however in his defense I suppose this was likely to have occurred more than once.

In reading the other posts here, I would like to respond to comment of the reviewer who thinks Coates is unkind to the food. I would suggest that it’s not so much the quality of the food here…the cheese is great, the salmon’s fresh, and every time a guest comes from abroad I drag them to an Indonesian restaurant and they never want to leave. But there is something of a lack of selection. All the sandwiches are cheese, all the fish is salmon. And the supermarkets are the same size as the local post office. As an American who is used to megamarts where you’re barely able to see the end of an aisle and can choose from more than 250 different boxes of breakfast cereal, this can come as something of a shock. But then, here’s what I love more: walking down my block and buying cheese at the kaaserie, a fresh slab of salmon from the fish shop, fruit from the Turkish market and then going across the street and picking up my shoes from the cobbler. These daily excursions and little local communities are unheard of in my sprawling, car-obsessed homeland.

In sum, I laughed, I cried, I got down on my knees and thanked my stars I live here in this unique and wonderful country.

Quite interesting

For this former Dutch national there were lots of changes. Especially in how the Dutch society has become more weary about the goings on. To me the fuss about Zwarte Piet, a traditional and fantasy character is amazing. I never saw him as a lowly slave but an assistant who happened to be a Moor.
The drug scene seems to be out of control, which I have noted on my yearly trips back to the country.
Also tolerance of different nationalities and religions is no longer.
I belief this book is accurate enough to get a real feel of what the country is today.

Haywood's attractive encyclopedia on the Vikings is that rarity--a satisfying reference source done right. The book is modestly sized and priced but packed with information. From the preface and introduction to the source list at the back, Haywood, who also wrote The Penguin Historical Atlas of the Vikings (1995), is a master of his subject. His prose is ample, at times challenging, but never pedantic. He anticipates the needs of the student, historian, teacher, librarian, traveler, and researcher with three superb gray-and-white maps of voyages, ports, and boundaries minus fussy cartographic extras that get in the way. A handy addition is a prefatory subject list offering such enticing topics as Dwarves, Khazars, Ladby ship burial, Midgard Serpent, and Slave trade. At back, the reader finds more useful study aids: a two-page historical chronology and three pages of Viking kings and rulers spanning the years 700 to 1100.The body of the encyclopedia assigns more than a third of each page to crisp, captioned black-and-white photographs and drawings. These illustrations span the top of each page and connect solidly to topics below. For example, an aerial photo showing the layout of a ninth-century ring-fort in the center of the modern Dutch village of Oost-Souburg complements the entry Ring-forts, Frankish; and a sketch of the Kanhave showing how engineers separated water and land accompanies the entry for this major eighth-century Danish engineering project. Unlike volumes that focus on Viking he-men, Haywood surveys all of Scandinavian life from the period, offering two intricate line drawings of an upright loom; entries on Jewelry, Life expectancy, and Weights and measures; and details concerning courtship, marriage, children, and divorce. Dotting each topic are cross-references in small caps that entice the reader to go beyond succinct data to a full understanding of the bold, inventive Vikings. Rich details on ship settings, road building, and Offa's dyke stress the geographic remains of their civilization. Balancing temporal exploits are the lasting intellectual and artistic monuments--rune-edged steles, filigreed carvings, bronze artifacts, illuminated documents, laws, and the wealth of sagas, riddles, and skaldic verse that set Scandinavia apart from the more genteel Europeans to the south and west.In terms of size, layout, cost, and ease of use, Haywood's encyclopedia is a worthy challenger to Peter Sawyer's The Age of Vikings (St. Martin's, 1962) and The Oxford Illustrated History of the Vikings (1997). Its one weakness is limited access to subtopics. Alphabetized cross-references are scanty. Without a back index, the book deprives the user of quick retrieval of details on such minor figures as Freydis, the female voyager of the Eriksson family; and Snorri, child of Gudrid and Thorfinn Karlsefni and the first European born in the Americas. This concern aside, the volume should prove useful in public and academic libraries. REVWR

Very good reference, despite errors

Encyclopedia of the Viking Age, by John Haywood

I wish I had bought this book when it first came out. As a quick historical reference guide to the people, places and things of the Viking era this work is an invaluable asset. Being a thousand years or so removed from the period, I have, in the past, had no small amount of trouble keeping track of some of the individual players in the 300 year drama that was the Viking Age. This work contains most of the important historical personages and many of the mythological ones. Let's face it, keeping track of the numerous Olaf's, Erik's and Harold's, is a little daunting when you first begin studying the period. Haywood's book is very well organized and easy to use. The Subject Index and the Encyclopedia sections are very useful in finding, or not finding, as the case may be, what you are looking for. The Encyclopedia section is cross indexed quite well for following up a readers initial inquiry.

Now having said this, I agree 100% with the previous reviewer who was most annoyed by the rather sloppy Norse fonts, misuse/misspelling of several Scandinavian letters and the rather random Anglicization of some words and phrases but not others. I found this a tad annoying, but not critically so. I'd suggest that for future printings a re-edit and complete Anglicization of the text for the sake of consistency, if for no other reason.

Very sharp and clear black & white photos on nearly every page help lighten up the somewhat, but necessarily, dry history text's. While I understand the necessity for saving space and keeping costs down, the font size used throughout the book is, and I'm guessing here, around 8pt. Just a bit too small for comfortable reading. On the up side, the book is clearly printed, (except for a few of the Norse fonts), on good quality paper which helps offset the small type size.

The Chronology near the end of the book was fairly inclusive of the major events of the era. The next section, "Viking Kings and Rulers 700-1100", is quite detailed and useful.

The "Further Reading" section is one of the best I've ever run across. Not only is it very extensive, but it is also broken down by Primary and Secondary Sources. These sections are further broken down into several subsections that will make further specific reading and research by the reader much, much easer.

On the mythological side there are several errors. For example, in "The Ransom of Ottar", Odin & Thor were not held hostage by Hreidmar. It was Odin & Honir/Hoenir. Again, a tad annoying, but not critically so. This work is geared much more to the historical facts and figures of the era, not the mythological or religious side. There are many other excellent books out there that cover the myth and religious aspect of the period, (authors: Ellis-Davidson, Crossley-Holland, Andy Orchard, Rudolf Simek and R.I. Page, just to name a few).

All and all a must have guide for anyone who needs a quick, but detailed, reference to most of the historical aspects of the Viking era.

On a side note, I have deleted this review and resubmitted it with a 4 star rating instead of a 5. This was after comparing this work with Simek's, "Dictionary of Northern Mythology", and Orchard's, "Dictionary of Norse Myth & Legend". I highly recommend all three works for anyone interested in digging deeper into the, "The Viking Age", they complement each other well.

Very thorough reference on the Vikings

Bought this book while doing some research on the Vikings for a novel. Haven't come close to reading the whole thing, but it's already been very helpful. Highly recommended for anyone doing research in this area.
