Yolanda Zappaterra is a writer and designer. She has written four books on design—most recently on the timely subject of ethical design—and is a regular contributor to Design Week and Grafik. She also writes for Time Out magazine. She is currently an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London, where she teaches in the graphic design school.

The best book for editorial design insight

I've been looking for a book that concentrated on Editorial Design.
I am very happy with this book. It presents a progressive sequential explanation of what a magazine/publication
is, it's parts, the language, terms and functions and roles of the Design team for a publication.

The examples are very good and the case studies represent some of the best known names in Editorial design history.
Varied styles, topics and genres are presented in a clear and concise way.

A great book for inspiration and for a better understanding of any designer interested in print and publications.

Good solid introduction to editorial design

I'm new to editorial design (coming from a web background) so this book was one of the first ones I read about designing magazines and other print media. The information is very well written and researched and I learned quite a bit about the industry. The images and examples are ok, but could be updated with more recent and better quality examples.

What I like most about the book is the diversity of ideas presented. Many of which I would never have created on my own. It is out the box thinking at its best. You might not use any of the ideas but the theories behind the ideas will take you far from where you would have gone without reading it.

Superbly written, very practical, with technical excellence and integrity

Church and Waclawski deliver exactly what practitioners needed - a book on how to bring the critical people together to form a team, discover the deeper purpose for going forward, design a technically excellent and user-friendly survey, analyze and report the data, and build on the findings to promote action in the organization. Each chapter contains some very useful political wisdom along with descriptions of the survey process.

With a crystal clear style, the authors explain challenging concepts clearly enough for learners and senior practitioners alike. This book stands out as the most important on the topic today.

In a future edition, I would like to see a special section comparing advanced modeling methods including relative weights analysis. It should make them comprehensible to users who have had some statistics, but aren't stats mayvens.

This book arrived in pristine condition and was well packaged. The price was unbelievable, I saved $134 dollars (almost half the price) on this book buying it here instead of the college bookstore. If you search using the ISBN number you will be ensured of getting the right printing and more importantly the right country for the release. Many books are released in multiple countries and may differ somewhat, this causes problems in school because the chapters and pages and some content might be different. Searching by ISBN will make sure you get the right book and shopping on Amazon will make sure you get the right price.

About the Author

An international bestselling author, Manel Loureiro was born in Pontevedra, Spain, and studied law at Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. After graduation, he worked in television, both on-screen (appearing on Television de Galicia) and behind-the-scenes as a writer. I really wanted to love it

Manel Loureiro gives us Dark Days, book 2 in the Apocalypse Z series. Readers should note that this new release picks up where the first book leaves off. I wouldn't recommend skipping the first book or you may find yourself a little lost. It had been a good chunk of time since I read the first book, so I was grateful to find Loureiro gave readers a brief run through of what happened to get us to book two.

Dark Days begins in the air. Our group is trying to get to the Canary Islands in hopes the infection has not spread there. Our lawyer is joined by his cat Lucullus, seventeen year old girlfriend Lucia, Prit the pilot, and Sister Cecelia. Their foray into safety is short lived as Prit is accused of a crime he didn't commit. The accusation is used as leverage to force him once again back into the melee and zombie infested lands to fine medicine. Betrayed by those they trusted, the group must find their way back to each other and out of a corrupt society on the verge of a revolution.

Dammit, I really wanted to enjoy this one, and I did...at times. But there were so many things I took issue with. First and foremost, the relationship between the thirty year old narrator and seventeen year old Lucia doesn't work for me. Fundamentally, I just cant get behind it. So it makes reading the book quite uncomfortable.

The first novel was in journal form, but Dark Days does not follow suit. It is told using first person standard narration. This was an issue for me because it was one of the things I found successful in Loureiro's previous book. Also, the book seemed short, in length as well as character development. It felt to me as if the characters were drawn on a piece of paper as opposed to interweaved within the pages. Dark Days could have benefited from much more description and what I like to call the meat and potatoes. The author merely skims the surface of events and people. Unfortunately, when you do that, it doesn't allow readers to connect with a character.

When all is said and done, Dark days didn't bring anything new to the table. Been there, done that, and seen it done better. Apocalypse Z is to be a trilogy. Will I read the third book? Yes. But I'm hoping it is more on par with the first book and will redeem the series from the dent this one put in it.

Unique Site

Most of the major cities of the world have some unique site, natural or man made that is not to be found in any other city. Athens has the Acropolis, San Francisco has the Golden Gate Bridge, and Sidney has it's Opera House. This volume selects the cities, then uses a relief type map of each one to locate a half dozen or more notable points of interest with a brief description of each and contains text concerning the cities' history and locale. The unique site in each is given a two page special treatment with enlargement and detail so that the reader may really understand the special qualities of that site. The detail offered really enables the reader to comprehend what makes it so special. Some may argue about the choice of city or choice of site in that city as obviously all can not be included. But few will disagree that the ones that were chosen to be featured are indeed qualified to be selected.
