A Disappointment
By SabreSailor
I am a very big fan of the DK Eyewitness series. I have used them all over the world and think they are superb.

The Caribbean version was a disappointment. Perhaps it is that it is trying to cover such a large and diverse area, but I found so many sights totally missing.

DK Guides are The Best of All Guides
By Amazon Customer
As an experienced traveler of many world destinations, I love DK best of all travel guides as they give me great information on the culture and history of the places I go and highlight sites and locations I might otherwise miss. Other guides seem more full of touristy shopping tips; fine for those with little or no interest in the identity and background of a location. This guide was a great help in planning excursions, and when not to, from a cruise that went to 12 different islands.

Wonderful pictures and maps. I was looking for a travel book about Jamaica. DK Eyewitness Travel Guides have never let me down.....so instead of just Jamaica I decided to get this Caribbean guide. SO GLAD I DID. I now have plenty of other places on my list to travel to next! As far as the Jamaica portion in the book, I did get what I was looking for.

Mastering Data Modeling: A User-Driven Approach, by John Carlis

Data modeling is one of the most critical phases in the database application development process, but also the phase most likely to fail. A master data modeler must come into any organization, understand its data requirements, and skillfully model the data for applications that most effectively serve organizational needs.

Mastering Data Modeling is a complete guide to becoming a successful data modeler. Featuring a requirements-driven approach, this book clearly explains fundamental concepts, introduces a user-oriented data modeling notation, and describes a rigorous, step-by-step process for collecting, modeling, and documenting the kinds of data that users need.

Assuming no prior knowledge, Mastering Data Modeling sets forth several fundamental problems of data modeling, such as reconciling the software developer's demand for rigor with the users' equally valid need to speak their own (sometimes vague) natural language. In addition, it describes the good habits that help you respond to these fundamental problems. With these good habits in mind, the book describes the Logical Data Structure (LDS) notation and the process of controlled evolution by which you can create low-cost, user-approved data models that resist premature obsolescence. Also included is an encyclopedic analysis of all data shapes that you will encounter. Most notably, the book describes The Flow, a loosely scripted process by which you and the users gradually but continuously improve an LDS until it faithfully represents the information needs. Essential implementation and technology issues are also covered.

From the Inside Flap

This book teaches you the first step of creating software systems: learning about the information needs of a community of stran

This book teaches you the first step of creating software systems: learning about the information needs of a community of strangers. This book is necessary because that step--known as data modeling--is prone to failure.

This book presumes nothing; it starts from first principles and gradually introduces, justifies, and teaches a rigorous process and notation for collecting and expressing the information needs of a business or organization.

This book is for anyone involved in the creation of information-management software. It is particularly useful to the designers of databases and applications driven by database management systems.

In many regards, this book is different from other books about data modeling. First, because it starts from first principles, it encourages you to question what you might already know about data modeling and data-modeling notations. To best serve users, how should the process of data modeling work? To create good, economical software systems, what kind of information should be on a data model? To become an effective data modeler, what skills should you master before talking with users?

Second, this book teaches you the process of data modeling. It doesn’t just tell you what you should know; it tells you what to do. You learn fundamental skills, you integrate them into a process, you practice the process, and you become an expert at it. This means that you can become a "content-neutral modeler," moving gracefully among seemingly unrelated projects for seemingly unrelated clients. Because the process of modeling applies equally to all projects, your expertise becomes universally applicable. Being a master data modeler is like being a master statistician who can contribute to a wide array of unrelated endeavors: population studies, political polling, epidemiology, or baseball.

Third, this book does not focus on technology. Instead, it maintains its focus on the process of discovering and articulating the users’ information needs, without concern for how those needs can or should be satisfied by any of the myriad technological options available. We do not completely ignore technology; we frequently mention it to remind you that during data modeling, you should ignore it. Users don’t care about technology; they care about their information. The notation we use, Logical Data Structures (LDS), encourages you to focus on users’ needs. We think a data modeler should conceal technological details from users. But historically, many data modelers are database designers whose everyday working vocabulary is steeped in technology. When technologists talk with users, things can get awkward. In the worst case, users quit the conversation, or they get swept up in the technological details and neglect to paint a complete picture of their technology-independent information needs. Data modeling is not equivalent to database design.

Another undesirable trend: historically, many organizations wrongly think that data modeling can be done only by long-time, richly experienced members of the organization who have reached the status of "unofficial archivist." This is not true. Modeling is a set of skills like computer programming. It can be done by anyone equipped with the skills. In fact, a skilled modeler who is initially unfamiliar with the organization but has access to users will produce a better model than a highly knowledgeable archivist who is unskilled at modeling.

This book has great ambitions for you. To realize them, you cannot read it casually. Remember, we’re trying to foster skills in you rather than merely deliver knowledge to you. If you master these skills, you can eventually apply them instinctively.

Study this book the way you would a calculus book or a cookbook. Practice the skills on real-life problems. Work in teams with your classmates or colleagues. Write notes to yourself in the margins. An ambitious book like this, well, we didn’t just make it up. For starters, we are indebted to Michael Senko, a pioneer in database systems on whose work ours is based. Beyond him, many people deserve thanks. Most important are the many users we have worked with over the years, studying data: Gordon Decker; George Bluhm and others at the U. S. Soil Conservation Service; Peter O’Kelly and others at Lotus Development Corporation; John Hanna, Tim Dawson, and other employees and consultants at US WEST, Inc.; Jim Brown, Frank Carr, and others at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; and Jane Goodall, Anne Pusey, Jen Williams, and the entire staff at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Primate Studies. Not far behind are our students and colleagues. Among them are several deserving special thanks: Jim Albers, Dave Balaban, Leone Barnett, Doug Barry, Bruce Berra, Diane Beyer, Kelsey Bruso, Jake Chen, Paul Chapman, Jan Drake, Bob Elde, Apostolos Georgopolous, Carol Hartley, Jim Held, Chris Honda, David Jefferson, Verlyn Johnson, Roger King, Joe Konstan, Darryn Kozak, Scott Krieger, Heidi Kvinge, James A. Larson, Sal March, Brad Miller, Jerry Morton, Jose Pardo, Paul Pazandak, Doug Perrin, John Riedl, Maureen Riedl, George Romano, Sue Romano, Karen Ryan, Alex Safonov, Wallie Schmidt, Stephanie Sevcik, Libby Shoop, Tyler Sperry, Pat Starr, Fritz Van Evert, Paul Wagner, Bill Wasserman, George Wilcox, Frank Williams, Mike Young, and several thousand students who used early versions of our work. Thanks also go to Lilly Bridwell-Bowles of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Writing at the University of Minnesota. Several people formally reviewed late drafts of this book and made helpful suggestions:Declan Brady, Paul Irvine Matthew C. Keranen, David Livingstone, and David McGoveran. And finally, thanks to the helpful and pat ent people at Addison-Wesley. Paul Becker, Mariann Kourafas, Mary T. O ’Brien, Ross Venables, Stacie Parillo, Jacquelyn Doucette, the copyeditor, Penny Hull, and the indexer, Ted Laux. How to Use This Book

To study this book rather than merely read it, you need to understand a bit about what kind of information it contains. The information falls into eight categories.

Introduction and justification. Chapters 1 and 2 define the data-modeling problem, introduce the LDS technique and notation, and describe good habits that any data modeler should exhibit. Chapters 22 and 24 justify in more technical detail some of the decisions we made when designing the LDS technique and notation.
Definitions. Chapter 4 defines the vocabulary you need to read everything that follows. Chapter 13 defines things more formally--articulating exactly what constitutes a syntactically correct LDS. Chapter 23 presents a formal definition of our Logical Data Structures in a format we especially like--as an LDS.
Reading an LDS. Chapter 3 describes how to translate an LDS into declarative sentences. The sentences are typically spoken to users to help them understand an in-progress LDS. Chapter 5 describes how to visualize and annotate sample data for an LDS.
Writing an LDS. Chapter 13 describes the syntax rules for writing an LDS. Chapter 14 describes the guidelines for naming the parts of an LDS. Chapter 15 describes some seldom-used names that are part of any LDS. Chapter 16 describes how to label parts of an LDS. (Labels and names differ.) Chapter 17 describes how to document an LDS.
LDS shapes and recipes. Chapter 7 introduces the concept of shapes and tells how your expertise with them can make you a master data modeler. Chapters 8 through 12 give an encyclopedic, exhaustive analysis of the shapes you will encounter as a data modeler. Chapter 26 describes some recipes--specific applications of the shapes to common problems encountered by software developers and database designers.
Process of LDS development. Chapters 6 and 21 give elaborate examples of the process of LDS development. Chapter 18 describes a step-by-step script, called The Flow, that you follow in your conversations with users. Chapters 19 and 20 describe steps you can take to improve an in-progress LDS at any time--steps that do not fit into the script in any particular place because they fit in every place. Considered as a whole, Chapters 18 through 20 describe the process of controlled evolution, the process by which you guide the users through a conversation that gradually improves the in-progress LDS. "Controlled" implies that the conversation is organized and methodical. "Evolution" implies that the conversation yields a continuously, gradually improving data model.
Implementation and technology issues. Chapter 22 describes in detail the forces that compel us to exclude constraints from the LDS notation. Many of these forces stem from implementation issues. Chapter 25 describes a technique for creating a relational schema from an LDS.
Critical assessment of the LDS technique and notation. Chapter 24 describes the decisions we made in designing the LDS technique and notation and

From the Back Cover

Data modeling is one of the most critical phases in the database application development process, but also the phase most likely to fail. You will learn about such vital topics as:

  • The fundamental problems of data modeling
  • The good habits that help a data modeler be effective and economical
  • LDS notation, which encourages these good habits
  • How to read an LDS aloud--in declarative English sentences
  • How to write a well-formed (syntactically correct) LDS
  • How to get users to name the parts of an LDS with words from their own business vocabulary
  • How to visualize data for an LDS
  • A catalog of LDS shapes that recur throughout all data models
  • The Flow--the template for your conversations with users
  • How to document an LDS for users, data modelers, and technologists
  • How to map an LDS to a relational schema
  • How LDS differs from other notations and why

"Story interludes" appear throughout the book, illustrating real-world successes of the LDS notation and controlled evolution process. Numerous exercises help you master critical skills. In addition, two detailed, annotated sample conversations with users show you the process of controlled evolution in action.

Very important book.
By A Customer
The secret is out!
I've been using the techniques described in this book for years because one of the authors taught me. I've used them to model data about research science, business, and topology. Now others can learn it too.
Carlis cured me of normalization. There's a difference between normalization and "normal forms". A goal of modeling is to produce databases in high normal forms - Boyce-Codd Normal Form, fifth normal form, etc... Most modelers think the only way to do this is through normalization, a specific process that step-by-step improves to a draft model. This book shows how to avoid that process completely. I used to do normalization. Now I use the conversational techniques of this book to reach high normal forms sooner. One thing I always hated about Normalization was that I usually did it after talking to users, which means I was making decisions that the users should have been making. I have not performed normalization in at least ten years. Yet I still produce databases in high normal form. This book does include a chapter about normalization, with normal forms up to fifth, so you can see for yourself how the technique produces high-normal-form databases. If you learned that normalization was essential part of data modeling, this chapter will help you learn this different way of working. If you are new to data modeling, you should start with this book to avoid learning normalization altogether. The principles of high normal forms are important, but the process of normalization is ludicrous.
This is a book about data modeling, not physical database design. It concentrates on the modeling in users' language. The naming conventions it recommends are based on guidelines of language and categories. If you follow these naming guidelines, you will not need to learn a huge list of more specific, special-case naming rules.
I also like what Carlis and MaGuire say about constraints. By following their constraint advice, I have become a much faster data modeler, and my team mates (programmers, DBAs) do not have to wait so long for me to finish my work. It also helps me keep my data models flexible, good for a changing business environment.
This book has more examples than any book on modeling I have ever seen. I stopped counting sample data models when I got to 300.
The hardest part of application design is understanding the user's data. This book concentrates on solving that problem, leaving the technical details of database design to other books.

Beware- there's alot more to Data Modeling than this!
By Shelby Nichols
I disagree that a person could become a "master" data modeler if the contents of this book are the complete set of skills in their arsenal. While the book outlines some good techniques for interviewing end users and basic data modeling skills, there is alot more involved in data modeling than what is covered here.
As an experienced data modeler who works with large, complex data models in a constantly changing business, I find I do not refer to this book at all. The book excludes common data modeling constructs that I have found very useful, including subtypes and supertypes. The book does not explain the difference between conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling. (It covers techniques used to capture conceptual/logical level data, but nowhere does it explain that or the difference between this type of model and a physical model, and why and when you'd need one or the other.)
The book does not cover normalization, which, once one leaves the interview with end users, one will need to understand. The book does not mention data integration with other systems or databases, how this topic is important and could (and often should) arise in interviews with end users.
Some of the topics covered I found shallow and incomplete, for example, how to name things in a data model. The authors take a parochial view by ignoring real world issues such as using consistent names across database and organizations, and avoiding naming things for what they are used for, not what they are.
As a practicing data modeler, I find my users aren't as naieve about data models as Carlis and Maguire assume them to be. I often am asked why I am modeling data in a given way. In my view, this book does not address the "why" - why do you model the data in the way suggested, and what happens if you don't. When I can answer these questions well for my customers, I earn approval, and this book doesn't equip one to do so.
In sum, my belief is that this book contains about 1/4 of the information a person needs to know to become a "master" data modeler. It's a good starter book if you are a novice data modeler or are having trouble gathering information from business subject matter experts, but if you really want to become an expert data modeler, I'd recommend continuing beyong this book. I prefer 'Data Modeling Essentials 2nd Edition' by Graeme Simsion

Excellent book, very efficient method
By Laurent Chassot
The book describes a method to structure any given sets of data according to generic rules. Eventhough my background does not allow me to judge the theoretical validity of the method, the book is easy to read and all the concepts are easy to understand and described in details. I have applied the Carlis and Maguire method for modeling data in a small research group and it is brilliant. The method allows users to discuss their data in their own language and the modeler can build a logical representation which is understood and well accepted by the users. I will certainly use this book and the method for any future database design.

Peace operations are now a principal tool for managing armed conflict and building world peace. The fully revised, expanded and updated second edition of Understanding Peacekeeping provides a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the theory, practice and politics of contemporary peace operations.

Drawing on more than twenty-five historical and contemporary case studies, this book evaluates the changing characteristics of the contemporary environment in which peacekeepers operate, what role peace operations play in wider processes of global politics, the growing impact of non-state actors, and the major challenges facing today’s peacekeepers. All the chapters have been revised and expanded and eight new chapters have been added.

Part 1 summarizes the central concepts and issues related to peace operations. It includes a new discussion of the theories of peace operations and analysis of the emerging responsibility to protect norm. Part 2 charts the historical development of peacekeeping from 1945 and includes a new chapter on peace operations in the 21st century. In Part 3, separate chapters analyze seven different types of peace operations: preventive deployments; traditional peacekeeping; assisting transition; transitional administrations; wider peacekeeping; peace enforcement; and peace support operations. Part 4 looks forward and examines the central challenges facing today’s peacekeepers, namely, globalization, the regionalization of peace operations, the privatization of security, civilian protection, policing and gender issues.

The second edition of Understanding Peacekeeping will be essential reading for students and scholars of peace and conflict studies, security studies, and international relations.

Review
"The way the book combines a conceptual approach, practical challenges and the politics of multidimensional peace operations makes it one of the most comprehensive works on the topic and therefore essential reading for all students, scholars and practitioners of peace operations."
International Peacekeeping

"The issues and discussions raised in this book are vital for anyone with a desire to understand peacekeeping operations. It offers a genuine insight into the ongoing theoretical discourse of preventing armed conflict and securing sustainable peace."
British Journal of Community Justice

"The first edition was a real gem, strong on the each of conceptual, theoretical, and case study dimensions. If anything, this new edition is even better. New chapters on gender and privatization, among others, ensure that the book remains cutting edge."
Paul F. Diehl, University of Illinois

"The second edition of Understanding Peacekeeping is a superior book and builds on the earlier pattern of solid analysis and insights as well as readability."
Thomas G. Weiss, City University of New York Graduate Center

"The United Nations Charter promised to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. It offered half a solution by outlawing war, but did not even mention the word "peacekeeping". This thorough and accessible book shows how peacekeeping has come to define modern efforts to resolve conflict, and the promise and the pitfalls that it offers."
Simon Chesterman, New York University School of Law and the National University of Singapore

"This is an essential book both for practitioners and for students of international relations, security studies and peace studies with an interest in peace operations that litmus test for the existence of a genuine post cold war international community. A thoroughly updated version of the authors' highly regarded first edition, the book offers comprehensive coverage, lucid critical analysis of both theory and practice, detailed case studies, and a clear and accessible prose style. The overall positive conclusion is heartening."
Oliver Ramsbotham, Emeritus University of Bradford

"A thorough, comprehensive and accessible account of contemporary peacekeeping which provides a clear guide to the theoretical and ethical issues involved, as well as a fine overview of the history, politics and objectives of multilateral intervention."
Norrie MacQueen, University of Dundee

An Outstanding Brick of Knowledge
By KRoy
Bellamy and Williams are extremely smart dudes, and very knowledgeable when it comes to Peace Operations. Virtually every subset of Peace Operations is covered in this book in some amount of detail, and the writing is clear and concise (you'll understand why I call it "Peace Operations" and not "Peace Keeping" when you're done with the book). Understanding Peacekeeping is informative and easy to understand, even for the informed layperson (which is what I am). I don't have a degree in politics or international relations -- I'm a computer science and math guy -- and yet I couldn't put this book down. Understanding Peacekeeping is a page-turner.

Pros:

Informative
Easy to understand
The paper feels really good
1 billion citations, so you can find more reading if you need to
Broad coverage of topics

Cons:

You'll impress your friends with all your worldly knowledge, which might make them jealous
The book is a brick. If you want to carry it everywhere (which I basically do), you'll need to start working out

Very informative.

I read this book as a part of a course about UN's Peacekeeping and to that course, this book was perfect. The book gives a very good insight into all parts of peacekeeping operations and is not so difficult to read.

Life Without Parole: Living and Dying in Prison Today, by Victor Hassine

In 1981, Victor Hassine went to prison. In 2008, he died there. This edition of Hassine's Life Without Parole is no longer just an account of life in confinement; it is the story of life and death behind bars.

Revised and updated throughout, the fifth edition includes:

A new title. In honor of Hassine's legacy, editors Robert Johnson and Sonia Tabriz have given the fifth edition a new subtitle--Living and Dying in Prison Today.

A new format. To create a more fluid narrative, the editors have restructured Hassine's writings to offer a seamless chronicle of his life and death in prison.

New stories. To better convey Hassine's journey, the editors have added three of Hassine's original works of fiction.

A new beginning and ending. The editors have replaced chapter introductions with two new essays bookending Hassine's text, offering insights that complement Hassine's own perceptions.

Review

"Four editions of Victor Hassine's book have earned a place as esteemed contributions to academia, and as reliable teaching tools in prison courses. The revamped posthumous version of the book provides us with a stirring memoir and a vivid memorial to a troubled but admirable life. Hassine's account is redolent with surprising insights and poignant observations, and with occasional touches of humor. It is also a blow-by-blow narrative of a gifted man's effort to transcend life in confinement."--Hans Toch, University at Albany, State University of New York

"For over a decade now, I have considered Hassine's text Life Without Parole to be an essential one in my teaching on corrections and the realities and challenges of this world. The life and death of Victor Hassine epitomizes the full cycle of humanity in our society--with its conflicting message at times of hope and tragedy--and touches upon the themes of justice, race, power, and redemption that are central to our criminal justice system. Hassine's words bring to life the people who work and live behind the walls of a maximum-security prison while simultaneously bringing into the light of day controversial topics for critical discussion in the classroom. Coupled with the thoughtful commentary and background offered by editors Robert Johnson and Sonia Tabriz, this text is a valuable tool that raises the level of discourse of any course related to corrections or public policy."--Denise Paquette Boots, University of Texas at Dallas

"Life Without Parole may be the most authentic prison book ever penned in the English language. This new edition, artfully recast by Johnson and Tabriz, is written in the blood of all the men and women who live in prison cages buried at the end of the world. This is the one book every student of criminal justice should read."--Stephen C. Richards, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

"Life Without Parole charts Victor Hassine's sojourn inside America's dystopian prison system. This latest collection of his work, edited by Robert Johnson and Sonia Tabriz, locates his narrative within an insightful combination of fiction and nonfiction that reinforces the horror of society's worst kept secret and challenges us to change it. Responding to Hassine's runaway train metaphor, Johnson and Tabriz provide incisive commentary that confirms the author's observations and helps illuminate the crippling pattern of alternating hope and fear that attends a prison sentence. In responding to Victor's death, his family observed that he considered his work done when hope withered and died in a prison isolation cell. He would have been comforted to know that his work will continue, left in the capable hands of Robert Johnson and Sonia Tabriz."--Charles Huckelbury, PEN Award Winning Author

Great book
By Dangermouse
This is such a great book. I know it sounds strange to write that about a book by a lifer (now dead by suicide) in a US prison but this really is the best book about prison and being inside the US prison system I have read. I have read about Victor Hassine's crimes and realise he might have done something terrible but he comes across as humane and wise in this book. A great account of what it must be like to find yourself 'in the belly of the beast'. It's written like a textbook/novel/academic work and deserves a much wider audience. I live in the UK so had to order it from America and it was well worth it. The USA jails well over a million of its citizens (often in terrible gladiatorial institutions) and it is interesting to see what effect it has. Unless they stay in for ever some of these guys are going to be back on the streets and I am convinced that the brutal conditions in prison won't make them model citizens once they are out there.

Thought provoking, disturbing, well worth reading for those who have an interest in the subject
By Sam I Am
This book was highly disturbing, as the author intended it to be. My first thought, upon reading the writing of an educated, highly literate young man who was doing life in prison, was how his mother must have felt. Nobody gives birth to a son and imagines one day, they'll be visiting him through a pane of glass inside a prison visiting room.

I learned new things by reading this book, and much of it made logical sense. Have you ever driven past an older prison, and wondered why it looked so foreboding? Historically (this may not be the case with modern archictecture), jails and prisons were intentionally designed to be ugly and scary on the outside for a reason - it conveys a message to society, especially to impressionable young children, "You don't ever want to go there." Hassine considers this to be something negative, but being someone who has lived an entire life outside of prison, I would tend to disagree. Do a Google search for the phrase "Sybil Brand" and you'll see why I've never been arrested or in trouble with the law. That institution, a County Jail for women, was well known to our local community as a place you didn't ever want to go.

I disagree with some of author Victor Hassine's other beliefs, but it was still eye-opening and informative to consider his perspective. He writes about a lifer named Cherokee, who has completed 40 years of a life sentence in prison, a man who has been in the prison so long, both corrections officers and inmates consider him to be something of a mascot. He has free run of the place, and his primary hobbies are digging through trash cans for things he can give, reuse or trade for something else, with both inmates and guards. Hassine believes there is something wrong with a society that continues to keep a man like Cherokee incarcerated, and says that he should be granted compassionate release and released to a nursing home. This is where Hassine's vision is incredibly naive and narrow. Cherokee had more freedom inside that prison than he would have in a state-paid nursing home as a Medicaid patient.

I believe this book should be required reading for criminal justice majors and those who plan on a career working in corrections or law enforcement. You don't have to like the people you're guarding, but certainly there is much to be gained by developing a better understanding of their situation as incarcerated individuals. I'm not sure this book will hold much interest for casual readers who don't have any connection to an incarcerated person.

"Love" is an unfortunate choice, but that's what's available. Disturbing insights into life imprisonment by a talented writer and thinker who ended his own life rather than go on without hope.

Bay Of Sighs (Thorndike Core), by Nora Roberts

The new Guardians Trilogy novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Stars of Fortune.
To celebrate the rise of their new queen, three goddesses of the moon created three stars, one of fire, one of ice, one of water. But then they fell from the sky, putting the fate of all worlds in danger. And now three women and three men join forces to pick up the pieces
Mermaid Annika is from the sea, and it is there she must return after her quest to find the stars. New to this world, her purity and beauty are nothing less than breathtaking, along with her graceful athleticism, as her five new friends discovered when they retrieved the fire star.
Now, through space and time, traveler Sawyer King has brought the guardians to the island of Capri, where the water star is hidden. And as he watches Annika in her element, he finds himself drawn to her joyful spirit. But Sawyer knows that if he allows her into his heart, no compass could ever guide him back to solid ground...
And in the darkness, their enemy broods. She lost one star to the guardians, but there is still time for blood to be spilled--the mermaid's in the water and the traveler's on the land. For she has forged a dangerous new weapon. Something deadly and unpredictable. Something human."

Review
"Perennial favorite Roberts picks up the action right after events from the first book in her Guardians trilogy...The heroine in this book is a mermaid unfamiliar with human culture, so a charming aspect of this story is her learning curve on human behavior. Great reading fun!"—RT Book Reviews

Middle Book in Latest Paranormal Romance
By K. M. Martin
The second book in the Guardians trilogy finds our group of six in Capri searching for the second falling star. The one concentrates of the romance between Sawyer and Annika. This is a romance that seemingly has a built-in ending date. Annika is a mermaid who was given legs so that she could take part in the quest to find the stars but will return to the sea in three months without them. Sawyer has a device that lets him travel in space and time.

Sawyer is reluctant to begin a relationship with Annika for a number of reasons. The primary one for him is that Annika is new to life on land and dealing with humans. He sees her as an innocent in need of protection. Despite her lack of familiarity with humans, Annika is a woman who knows what she wants.

Our villain, the dark goddess Nerezza, has found herself a human partner in Andre Malmon who is a bored killer who has had previous run-ins with Sawyer and with Riley. If he weren't so irredeemably evil, I could feel sorry for him because his relationship with Nerezza changes him for the worse. But Malmon makes his bargain eagerly and ends up changed and enslaved to her.

Since one of the main viewpoint characters in this one isn't human, we get a lot of Annika's joy and curiosity. We also get a lot of opportunities to see her struggling with idioms and customs of humans. For example, she has a very different way of dealing with nakedness and talking about sex. Luckily, her new sisters Riley and Sasha are there to clear up some of her confusion.

Again, this story is trademark Roberts in the relationships she builds between the characters and their acceptance of each others strengths and weaknesses. Friendships matter in a Roberts book. I can't wait to read the next one both to see the end to their quest and to see the relationship that is coming next.

Not what they used to be...
By P. Martin
Nora Roberts was always one of my favorite authors and with trilogies like Three Sister Island, the Key series, the Seven series, Dance of the Gods, Jewels series, etc, I enjoyed the books tremendously. But this series (and the Cousins O'Dwyer) don't quite have the same punch as past trilogies. It feels like a lot of thought and detail have been left out to make them shorter and easier to write...and apparently they feel they need to be easier to read. I'll finish the series since I've started it, but at this point I'll give it some serious thought before starting the next one. So much detail seems to be missing as compared to past ones.

Same ole Same ole
By Megan K. Jeffery
Nora Roberts is getting to be redundant, sadly. I have always been a HUGE fan of hers, but these trilogies all sound the same, especially the supernatural series'. I know they sell, and the books are a success, but I think that has FAR more to do with the Nora Roberts brand than it does with the actual stories. This series is pretty much the same as The Circle Trilogy, The Signs Trilogy, The Sisters, the Cousins,....and so on. Change the names and its just the same thing over and over. It's a huge bummer, as I have LOVED her stuff for years.

Culture of One (Penguin Poets), by Alice Notley

A new collection that captures the austere serenity of the Southwest American desert.

Award-winning, Paris-based poet Alice Notley's adventurous new book is inspired by the life of Marie, a woman who resided in the dump outside Notley's hometown in the Southwestern desert of America. In this poetical fantasy, Marie becomes the ultimate artist/poet, composing a codex-calligraphy, writings, paintings, collage-from materials left at the dump. She is a "culture of one." The story is told in long-lined, clear-edged poems deliberately stacked so the reader can keep plunging headlong into the events of the book. Culture of One offers further proof of how Notley "has freed herself from any single notion of what poetry should be so that she can go ahead and write what poetry can be" (The Boston Review).

Stranger in My Own Country: A Jewish Family in Modern Germany, by Yascha Mounk

A moving and unsettling exploration of a young man's formative years in a country still struggling with its past

As a Jew in postwar Germany, Yascha Mounk felt like a foreigner in his own country. When he mentioned that he is Jewish, some made anti-Semitic jokes or talked about the superiority of the Aryan race. Others, sincerely hoping to atone for the country's past, fawned over him with a forced friendliness he found just as alienating.
Vivid and fascinating, Stranger in My Own Country traces the contours of Jewish life in a country still struggling with the legacy of the Third Reich and portrays those who, inevitably, continue to live in its shadow. Marshaling an extraordinary range of material into a lively narrative, Mounk surveys his countrymen's responses to "the Jewish question." Examining history, the story of his family, and his own childhood, he shows that anti-Semitism and far-right extremism have long coexisted with self-conscious philo-Semitism in postwar Germany.
But of late a new kind of resentment against Jews has come out in the open. Unnoticed by much of the outside world, the desire for a "finish line" that would spell a definitive end to the country's obsession with the past is feeding an emphasis on German victimhood. Mounk shows how, from the government's pursuit of a less "apologetic" foreign policy to the way the country's idea of the Volk makes life difficult for its immigrant communities, a troubled nationalism is shaping Germany's future.

From Booklist
Mounk’s family was devastated by the Holocaust; those who survived were scattered across Europe after WWII. Yet Mounk’s immediate family carved out an existence in their native Poland, most as loyal Communists, until anti-Semitic party purges in the 1960s and ’70s led them to settle in Germany, where Mounk was born, in 1982. As a young Jew growing up in postwar Germany, his revelation to friends and acquaintances of his Jewish identity elicited a variety of responses, some predictable and some surprising. Some people were openly hostile, spouting blatantly racist screeds. Others reacted with what is best termed sullen silence, while others felt compelled to overreact with a stance of exaggerated philo-Semitism. More recently, Mounk has detected a shift in attitudes of many Germans, which has broad implications beyond relations with Jews. He perceives a sense that Germans feel that their “guilt” has been expiated by the passage of time, which results in a rise of German nationalism within Europe, unapologetic hostility to immigrants, and even a reassertion of claims of German “victimization.” --Jay Freeman

Review

“[Mounk's] book combines anecdote and analysis in a witty and engaging manner that belies his deeply serious purpose.” ―Daniel Johnson, The Wall Street Journal

“Informative and entertaining . . . What is it like to be a Jew in Germany in the postwar era? What would lead even a handful of Jews to choose to make their lives in the country that was responsible for the Holocaust? And how did the descendants of the perpetrators treat the descendants of the victims? These are the questions at the heart of Mounk's book, which starts out as a memoir but evolves into something more like a history and a polemic. Accessibly written and full of humor, Stranger in My Own Country uses Mounk's own experiences to shed light on postwar German history and current German politics.” ―Adam Kirsch, Tablet

“How do things stand with German Jews [today]? In Stranger in My Own Country, Yascha Mounk gives an artful and thoughtful answer . . . Mounk's personal anecdotes do a lot to make his mindset understandable, but he also deals with the big picture. The best feature of his fine book is how he interweaves macro and micro levels of discussion. He does this, moreover, in graceful prose, which helps to showcase his talent for disentangling paradoxes in original ways.” ―Paul Reitter, Bookforum

“[Mounk] is a gifted raconteur and aphorist, and if you want to learn about Germany's preverse, absurd love for its Jews--the flip side, or the bastard child, of its historical anti-Semitism--this book is a fine place to start . . . Mr. Mounk skillfully puts Germans and Jews on his analyst's couch . . . There is an adage, usually attributed to an Israeli psychoanalyst, that the Germans will never forgive the Jews for Auschwitz. If you want to understand how that can be, read this book.” ―Mark Oppenheimer, The New York Times

“Mounk's account, one of the first on this subject addressed to a general English-speaking readership, is an intriguing and sometimes disturbing glimpse into an aspect of Jewish life of which most American Jews may not be aware.” ―Martin Green, Jewish Book Council

“[A] rich and remarkable memoir . . . Mounk's engaging and provocative book amounts to a kind of intellectual and emotional self-portrait of the author himself and, at the same time, a historical and cultural profile of post-war Germany.” ―Jonathan Kirsch, Jewish Journal

“In Stranger in My Own Country, Yascha Mounk compellingly illustrates how 'the Jewish question' continues to shape public consciousness and everyday interactions in modern Germany, not least among Gentiles afflicted with the 'philo-Semitism of good intentions.' Deftly interweaving political history and personal experience, Mounk argues convincingly that excessive guilt can be no less toxic than disavowal when it come to reckoning honestly with the past. His book offers no easy answers to those seeking liberation from the burdens of history, and indeed shows how dangerous and misguided this impulse can be.” ―Eyal Press, author of Beautiful Souls: Saying No, Breaking Ranks, and Heeding the Voice of Conscience in Dark Times

“Clear, unpretentious, wide-ranging, and touching, Stranger in My Own Country is a story about the patience and the courage necessary for reconciliation. As perspicacious in its argument as it is moving in its anecdote, it's the one book that ought to be read by everybody who suspects there's nothing left to say about the Jews and the Germans. It marks the debut of a writer we'll be likely--and lucky--to count among the most useful of our public intellectuals.” ―Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author of A Sense of Direction: Pilgrimage for the Restless and Hopeful

“A solid combination of moving personal saga and thought-provoking research.” ―Kirkus

A personal story and the difficult interaction of two peoples
By SL
A smart and fascinating study of an impossible situation told in the context of Mounk's own experiences growing up in Germany: Germans and Jews trying against all odds to figure out how to be normal with one another, and failing. Not, as Mount takes pains to point out, for want of trying, but the historical legacy, with all its attendant ambivalence, guilt and resentment, is just too overwhelming to be overcome with mere goodwill. Mounk's survey of the ongoing tensions emanating from the Nazi past extend beyond autobiography to German cultural life (e.g., Martin Walser, Gnter Grass) and public policy (debates on participation in NATO- or U.S.-supported wars, demands on the weaker economies within the EU). - You have to feel sorry for the Germans, who can't seem to win for losing. (Mounk is careful to emphasize, however, that white Americans, with our own painful history and fraught race relations, have no reason to be smug.) While reading this book, I learned from the newspaper that some 30,000 Israelis, mainly young people, are now living in Berlin, which got me to wondering whether the problems Mounk describes are to some extent trumped by the "normalcy" of being Israeli. - I found the most moving section of the book to be Mounk's description of German Chancellor Willy Brandt's falling to his knees at the Warsaw Ghetto monument in 1970: "For one long moment there is no movement. Faces freeze. Nobody breathes. After an eternity, Brandt's breath becomes visible: he exhales, perhaps surprised by his own gesture, undoubtedly relieved to have done justice to the occasion. He, who has no personal guilt, has issued a moving plea for forgiveness. He, who need not apologize to anybody, has kneeled on behalf of those who dare not or cared not to. It was a gesture that did as much for Germany's reconciliation with the victims of the Third Reich as thirty years [1949 - 1970?] of democratic rule."
