Very Interesting Book

I recently took a geology class regarding "California's Gold Country" and this was the text the teacher recommended. Zipping to Amazon.COM I discovered they did indeed have it (no doubt!). Needless to say, it contains quite a colorful and amazing history of why California was the place to go for gold. Students of history or individuals wanting to learn more about the Gold Rush era of California I would definetely recommend this book. This student in geology certainly did.

I bought this for someone else and I am still getting rave reviews from the recipient. It has much more history than is in most "Gold Rush" books. They are thoroughly enjoying it and say then have trouble putting it down.

He has practiced as a strategic management consultant for more than 25 years and has assisted executives of numerous companies in successfully managing various stages of domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, including planning, negotiation, and integration. He lectures at various universities in the United States, Western and Eastern Europe, and China, in graduate schools of business administration as well as executive programs. He has conducted numerous workshops to top executives in many countries. Dr. Weber’s studies have been published in top international academic and practitioner journals, and his papers have received more than 2,000 citations in leading journals and books. He is the winner of the 2010 Outstanding Author Contribution Award. Professor Weber is co-founder and co-president of the EuroMed Research Business Institute (www.emrbi.com), the EuroMed Academy of Business, and the EuroMed Research Centre. Shlomo Y. Tarba, Ph.D. is a lecturer in Strategic Management and Global Strategic Partnerships at the Management School, The University of Sheffield, UK. Christina �berg, Ph.D. is an associate professor at the Department of Industrial Management and Logistics, Lund University. Very good

It is a rarity to read a very well written book on M&As, especially something with new info. This is very easy to read if you are a beginner when it comes to M&As, especially if interested in the people side of deals. I like the more pragmatic approach when discussing cultural clash and due diligence, leadership and HR issues (not the usual empty theories). I enjoyed the chapter on trust, an element that is very often neglected.

If you are looking for THE M&A book I strongly suggest Creating Value From M&As (a masterpiece on this topic). If you are looking for a more pragmatic angle on the people side of M&As this could be a good choice - it is not a truly complete guide but it offers great pragmatic advice. If like me you are an experienced M&As practitioner this book is not grounbreaking, just a nice to have.

Best Field Guide I've encountered

I've used many field guides in my life, and I can state unequivocally that Julie Feinstein's "Field Guide to Urban Wildlife" is the most helpful and interesting that I have encountered! The photographs are beautiful, many of them striking, many intriguing. The descriptions and explanations are straightforward and informative. There are fascinating stories, anecdotes and facts; there is more than enough relevant material for both the scientifically curious and the casual browser. The author transmits a very apparent affection and respect for the animals she describes. This is a work of scholarship that the lay reader and the biologist can enjoy. I have used it numerous times to identify and learn about species of wildlife in my city.

An entertaining and informative book.

"Field Guide to Urban Wildlife" by Julie Feinstein is an informative, entertaining, and delightful read. I learned many things about our urban wildlife companions that I never knew before. Such as: The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird in the world and can dive at speeds of up to 200 mph! Such as: Barn Owls can turn their heads 180 degrees, just like the girl in "The Exorcist." One of the best things about this book is that it's not written in the style of a dry doctor's thesis, but instead is written in a lively manner which makes it fun to read. Also, the book is filled with color pictures of the urban creatures Ms. Feinstein is describing. Among them is a Red-Tailed Hawk who decided to nest on a windowsill of the famed American Museum of Natural History, in New York, where Ms. Feinstein works. It must have been there as a way of saying "Thanks, Julie."

At last there is a book that has been written about urban wildlife that is not only educational but extremely entertaining. It was hard to put down. My husband and I live in a wooded area and are fascinated, and sometimes saddened, by how wildlife has been forced to adapt to survive. This book explains it all! I plan on purchasing this book as a gift for some fellow animal lovers.

A great book for anyone just starting out with GNU/Linux or wishing for a review

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

* To borrow another's phrase, this is NOT a "small form linux (sic) for dummies" title, and assumes you are a fairly knowledgeable about computers.
* Even though the front cover mentions Fedora, the coverage is minimal; whether that is good or bad is up to you.
* The majority of the book covers command-line applications, although there are GUI applications mixed in the later half of the book.
* While the command-line suggestions the book gives are solid, many of the GUI applications are no longer maintained and in my opinion should not have been anything more than a footnote.
* READ the errata pages for this book.

GENERAL:

The book opens with a brief primer on what commands are, what they look like on the command-line and covers the fact that they're not standardized. The book also makes good use of the space provided by making a point, but doing it well the first time instead of trying multiple approaches to explaining it (much like I might do). The coverage of the system directories was the best I've seen so far, breaking the paths into scope, category and applications. These are not standard terms as the author mentions, but they work great for the explanations.

From there you continue to explore commands in the context of a particular purpose. Some of the topics covered that I really appreciated were options to display non-printable characters like carriage returns, file/directory permissions, text manipulation and the shell scripting primer. While the scripting primer isn't enough to answer every question, it covered the common uses well enough that I'll be referring to this book whenever I need to remind myself of the syntax.

GOOD POINTS:

* Lots of useful tips
* The popular distros mentioned seem to be current
* Easy to read, both with the style of writing and the length of the book
* Commands are organized by purpose
* Insecure commands like telnet are covered, and sternly warned against

OUTDATED/UNMAINTAINED APPLICATIONS:

Instead of updating the content from the first edition to remove unmaintained software and include actively developed software (that has taken its place), the content was presumably unchanged.

Gaim was mentioned as an Instant Messaging client, but the project has been known as Pidgin for 5 years. I'm shocked that this made it's way past the author and the technical editor(s).

The inclusion of xv as a light-weight alternative to Gimp seems to be an odd choice, as it has a shareware license and is no longer supported or included by any current distros; installing the rpm on Fedora 16 didn't go well. Another light-weight editing application under active support (like Pinta) seems like it would have been a better choice to mention, even if it too isn't included by default.

grip was covered, but it hasn't had any updates in 6 years, so another ripping/encoding application should have also been covered. For example, Sound Juicer is provided for Gnome installations, while KDE has support for audio ripping built-in via Konqueror. KaduioCreator is also provided for KDE installations.

Ubuntu has a really good wiki page on this topic for further reading. Search for "CDRipping" on their wiki page and you should find it.

To be fair I really like grip and still use it in an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS VM, but let's face it, unless another maintainer steps up its days are seriously numbered. Much like grip, xmms has been discontinued for a while, but thankfully succeeded by various community forks. Like a few others, Audacious is still maintained and supported and would have been a much better application to mention in place of xmms.

RECOMMENDED CHANGES:

For reprints or future editions, replace outdated software suggestions with actively supported software. Many suggestions were very dated (grip, xv, xmms) and no longer maintained.

FINAL WORDS:

In closing, this is a great book for anyone just starting out with GNU/Linux, and anyone who needs a solid refresher of the basics. Even though I did not rate this book with the highest marks, it is a good value for the money and worth picking up for the current price.

This guide has enough and not too much. Excellently laid out for either straight reading or reference. It got me oriented to Linux very quickly and will do well to have along side when you boot your first install of Linux.

About the Author
Peter Frick is associate professor and academic dean at St. Paul s College. He teaches a variety of subjects, including courses in Western religions, theology, and biblical studies. Frick recently published A Handbook of New Testament Greek Grammar (2007) and edited Bonhoeffer s Intellectual Formation (2008). Frick is a member of the international Bonhoeffer Society and a member of the editorial board responsible for the publication of the new standard edition of the Bonhoeffer works. His main interest lies in the intersection of philosophy and theology, both in ancient and modern times.

Not the American edition

This edition (with red cover) is published by Buena Prensa for use in the Catholic dioceses of Mexico. While it was formerly the ritual to be used in the United States, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops have now promulgated their own ritual (in Spanish). This is the ritual book published by Liturgical Press (with blue cover). Although there are not large differences in the texts, there are a few notable changes in the American edition, mostly wording changes in a few places. However, now that there is an official American ritual in Spanish, the use of the Mexican ritual book is abrogated.

Note also this change to the rite of welcoming since the publication of this book: No longer does the minister say 'La comunidad cristiana te recibe con gran alegria' (the Christian Community welcomes you with great joy), but 'Iglesia de Dios' (the Church of God) replaces 'comunidad cristiana' (the Christian Community). This change was made by Pope Benedict XVI shortly before his retirement.

No treble clef--two bass clefs--I guess that's the original writing, but disappointing

Heads up for anyone who doesn't sight read the bass clef well.

This "piano solo" sheet music is all written for double bass clef. No treble clef at all! It is a low song--I didn't realize it played the melody in the octave below middle "C". I thought it sounded fine transcribing to start on the "B" below middle C, but apparently the actual sheet music starts (as written in the bass clef) goes down as low as D sharp... So, even if you wanted to accompany yourself (and I just wanted the melody line), you're looking at two bass clefs and no treble clef at all.

Speaking for myself, if you're not that good at sight-reading, it is very difficult to play two bass clefs. That might be great "reading bass" practice for someone (else) but I'm disappointed.

Exceptional Grammar Book!

I am a Master's student of French with an undergraduate degree in French language and linguistics. I am also a French language proctor for proficiency exams.

This is the best advanced grammar book I have ever used. The explanations are in English to facilitate understanding with an English-speaking audience. The details in the book are completely nuanced and contextualized, giving you a very thorough understanding of each aspect of the language. Even reading the beginning section on "pr�sent" or "pass� compos�" taught me a multitude of nuances that I was not yet familiar with.

Bref - buy the book. It's more than worth it if you're a serious student.

Classic Thought Made Accessible

I was wary of this book when I first purchased it, but to my delight it turned out to be the best introduction to the Hermes/Thoth literature available. Beyond the value of its clear and readable presentation of some of the oldest wisdom tracts in the Western World, the authors also briefly touch on the provinence of the works. Because the Hermes Corpus was declared a fraud in the 17th century, the heavy lifting required to point out that they are not is simply beyond the scope of this volume. But any reader who is intrigued by the material can go on and discover for themselves the story of Hermes and make their own judgement. I place the rediscovery of the Hermes Corpus on the same level as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi texts, so this fine introductory volume should be considered by anyone interested in ancient literature and spirituality.

NOT the actual Hermetica, but a jumbled intro *about* it

This book is basically a chop shop version of the Corpus Hermeticum and Asclepius, with translated excerpts taken from various sources including other authors who have been inspired by Hermeticism instead of the original source material itself. If that's what you're interested in, so much the better, but the title is really misleading. It would be more appropriate to say this book is a composite of Hermetic and Hermetically-inspired teachings.

A number of the reviewers on here say they're newcomers to the Hermetica and that they really appreciated this approach, finding it simple and easier to digest. In fairness, I've been studying the Hermetica for years, so perhaps your needs and views will be different from mine. I do have to say, however, that I found this book very deficient. I suppose if you want to study this subject, you could compare this book to fast food.

Pros:

1) The intros are written in clear English that anyone with a high school level education should be able to understand. If you don't give a toss for footnotes, you'll like that.
2) There's a list of sources in the back for further reading, should you wish to take your Hermetic studies further.
3) There's also a list of where this book was excerpted from, which I appreciated. This book is so drastically different from the actual Hermetica that when I first opened it, I did a double-take.

Cons:

1) The most obvious: this is an assortment of excerpts *from* the Hermetica as well as *about* the Hermetica. It appears that the chapters are created by subject matter, which means Freke and Gandy pulled excerpts from various sources instead of keeping them in their original order (and in complete form instead of pulling excerpts and adding in stuff from other ancient authors). A glance at the source material in the back of the book confirmed this suspicion. I can't reiterate enough how much wisdom is lost in this version. It's a completely different document. In this book, you see what looks like poetry. The actual Hermetica is a series of conversations between Hermes and a god-being named Poimandres in a series of question-and-answer sessions, as well as between Hermes and his own students.
2) The decision to compile this book from a number of sources makes me question the translation, honestly, including the decision to refer to God as Atum. The authors claim it's because the concept of God is loaded in our society with certain conceptions that they wanted to avoid, but their word choice is poor. It's hard to explain if you haven't read the actual Hermetica, but basically Atum still misses the mark of fully encapsulating everything that Hermes Trismegistus was trying to say.

I can't hate on this book, because at least it's gotten people's appetites whetted for Hermeticism - which sounds like the original goal of Freke and Gandy. I love the Hermetica, but I'll be the first to say that it can be dense reading when you first open it. What Freke and Gandy have created is, in essence, a weak Cliff's Notes overview, and of course such a thing will always be lacking to the original. Evidently a number of reviewers have found value in this, so I can't dismiss that. But if you're looking for something with the original wisdom intact, or you've already read the actual Hermetica, you may find this book useless.

If you're interested in the genuine article, you should check out Hermetica: The Greek Corpus Hermeticum and the Latin Asclepius in a New English Translation, with Notes and Introduction. It's the best English language translation available today. The original writings are only 90 pages, with the rest of the book composed of a history and footnotes.

I prefer going straight to the source when studying something rather than having an author chop things up and take translation and editorial liberties on my behalf as Freke and Gandy have, but that's me. Obviously many reviewers here have appreciated their approach, so whether you like this book will probably depend on which approach you prefer.

I do hope, though, that even if you read Freke and Gandy's book, you will continue on to the original source material with Copenhaver's translation. There is so much in there that is missing in Freke and Gandy's book; if you think their book blew your mind, go to the source! In fact, I suggest that if and when you read Compenhaver's book, do so with a pen in hand and underline passages that particularly interest you, as well as take notes and jot down questions as you go. Believe me, you'll have a lot of them.

Deliberate misinterpretations

This is more a text "inspired by" the Greek and Latin Hermetica, and not a translation. For example, where the latin text has "deus", meaning of course "god", Freke & co. consistently translate as "Atum". Deus/theos in the Hermetica is not a proper name, but an honorific for the supreme principle, which is NEVER identified as the egyptian god Atum in the texts.
Buy instead "Hermetica" by Brian Copenhaver, or "The Way of Hermes" by Clement Salaman et al.
