She presents a carefully designed, mystery-filled plot which once again illustrates her abilities as a master storyteller. Characters are somewhat reluctant to reveal themselvesbut this is a most appropriate style for a tale of dangerous and uncertain times. This is the first book in the Kingdom series. The heroine is a strong character with a quixotic streak, who learns the difficulty of helping other people -- it's not as easy as it seems! The writing is elegant, the plot is interesting and unusual, the characterization is excellent and you quickly grow to care for her and her family. The Kingdom is well-imagined, and it's interesting to see how separate the lives of the nobles are from the common people. I have read this book three times over a 14 year period, and still enjoy it as much as ever.

If you are thinking about reading this book I urge you to stop thinking and start reading. I read it for the first time as a teenager and have read it again so many times since then. I get lost in the Kingdom each time I enter it and I find that I cannot stay away from the series for very long. I especially recommend it for girls who are looking for inspiration and are tired of the damsel-in-distress stories that are so often marketed toward girls and women. So, stop reading reviews and just read the book!

This is one of my favorite books in the whole world. I have read it at least a dozen times. A very thought provoking, dramatic almost-fairy tale that challenges how we view the world and the stories that shape it, through an admirable, strong and clever young woman's eyes. Highly recommend!

This is one of the most profound literatures I ve ever read.the brevity of the words along with the clarity and profoundness of the wisdom resonate within me far deeply than any other self help books.
Each day I convert the gems into a form of affirmation which I read multiple times during the course of the day.what impact is these small words have over me could only be counted by the intangibility of the happiness I feel within each time I repeat these words to myself.

Love this wisdom!

I love these bits of wisdom! They get my day off to a great start and more often than not, really hit home at an issue I'm struggling with. Will never forget reading one about, "What would you say to someone if you knew this was the last time you'd talk with them?" I got that message on a day that ended up being my mother's last day of life. I didn't know it at the time I read the message. Reading the message, though, planted a seed in my mind that day and, thankfully, it was at the forefront of my mind when I ended up having my last conversation with my mother later that day. So, I'm a big fan!

A must read!

I have been training and showing dogs for over ten years, and currently manage a dog grooming shop. I LOVE this book.
The author approaches everything from a science based perspective, but her writing style is pleasant and relatable. This is not a training book in the traditional sense - she's not telling you how to get your dog to do a specific exercise or task. This book compares and contrasts canine behavior and human behavior. Humans and canines naturally react in very different ways to the world, and this book helps to bridge that gap. For instance, humans meet strangers face to face and shake hands and consider it a friendly greeting, whereas dogs see face to face interaction with direct eye contact as challenging, aggressive behavior. The book is full of this type of information that will help you understand and interact with dogs. Whether you work in a dog centered field, or you just want a better relationship with your pet, this is the book for you.
I own four copies of this book so I can lend it out to my staff and clients and still have a copy for myself.

This book is packed with great information about dog psychology and how humans fail to understand what dogs are trying to tell us. I'm an animal assisted therapist and have found the information it contains very valuable.

Morris Venden is a wonderful writer who touches your soul

The book arrived on time and in good condition. :)

I have never read a book by Morris Venden that didn't touch my soul and this one was no exception. I normally try to buy one for me and one to give away - and sometimes I only have one and wind up giving it away and then look for another one for me. He helps me understand and I love to read his books and if I read it more than once, I get something new out of it everytime I read it.
