Review
"As sustainability is now a key driver of most activity, Events and Sustainability is a ‘must read’ text for event management students. It is a well structured text that comprehensively addresses all of the key dimensions of sustainable events in a highly accessible fashion. Each chapter sets clear learning outcomes and provides highly relevant case studies and thought provoking discussion questions. Events and Sustainability will also make a valuable reference for event practitioners." - Professor Leo Jago, Professor in Hospitality and Events, University of Surrey

"Against an environment of increased commoditisation and competition, austerity in the west and abundance in emerging economies never has an understanding of the role of sustainability to today's economy and society been more important. This text offers a pragmatic, enlightened and realistic insight into the increasing challenges and opportunities that are facing festivals and events in to order to develop and deliver more sustainable events. The combined use of context setting, key theory, international case studies; public and private sector examples and activities and discussion makes this a must read for any student or practitioner studying or interested in the future sustainability of events."- Dr. Jane Ali-Knight, Director, Edinburgh Institute: Festivals, Events and Tourism, Edinburgh Napier University

The True History of God's Words

There is not one history of the Bible, but two. One is a history of God preserving His words through His people. The other is of the devil using the Roman Catholic church to pervert God's words through her "scholars."

Written in a down-to-earth style, and packed with cartoon illustrations by Jack Chick, Daniels shows that the Bibles Rome gave us are really clever counterfeits, designed to eliminate God's preserved words in English, the KJV. You will see why the KJV is the only Bible you can trust.

Review
It took 300 years of clever maneuvering to bring us where we are today. David Daniels masterfully uncovers facts blurred by Roman Catholic historians. This marvelous book will be a wild ride and an eye opener. History, that so many find difficult to understand, is made simple with down-to-earth explanations backed by many illustrations. The Roman Catholic system did NOT give us the Bible, as they so blatantly claim. --Jack Chick

About the Author
David Daniels, B.A., M.Div., is trained in Bible and linguistics. After twenty years of searching the Hebrew and Greek scriptures and studying the history of the Bible, he has concluded that the King James Bible is God's preserved words in English.

Did the Catholic Church Give Us the Bible?
By Blaine Bosserman
Great book! It shows the you the truth of how we got our present Bible and what role the Catholic Church play in that, if any at all! This book also shows the innacuracies of versions other than the KJV.

Interesting theories, unconvincing
By William C. Sain
The theories Daniels presents are interesting, but ultimately unconvincing. This is largely because the book lacks primary sources (or any sources) for its boldest claims. Many of the secondary sources come from other Chick Publications books. That alone does not disprove any of his claims, but it does make it difficult to convince an objective Protestant, a Catholic, or anyone Daniels/Chick would consider a non-believer. This book is best going to strengthen the faith of those who already agree with its premise, namely, that the Catholic church is evil, the Whore of Babylon, and is working hard to destroy God's "true word," the King James Bible.

Various problems:

*Daniels praises Erasmus for preserving and translating the "textus receptus" which he claims is the true word of God. But Erasmus didn't have the whole New Testament, and had to back translate using Jerome's Vulgate (which Daniels said is a perverted Bible)

*Daniels repeatedly says Catholics venerate Origen as a saint and church father. This is not true. He was condemned for heretical beliefs including, but not limited to, the pre-existence of souls, something he took from Plato but not from the Bible. For this reason, among others, Origen is respected but is not raised to the status of saint or father.

*Neither is Alphonsus Liguori a church father. He is seen as a "Doctor of the Church," which is something entirely different. Doctors are men and women who are great theologians throughout history. Fathers are men who lived in the first few centuries that helped form the church's teachings. Some fathers are doctors; some are not. Some doctors are fathers; some are not.

*From what I could tell, the Vaduois did not exist until the 12th or 13th century. Some Protestant theologians tried to tie them to earlier groups, but this is definitely a minority position not accepted by objective historians without an agenda.

Benefits of the book:

*Rightly points out the danger of the "big Bible" industry, whose goal is to make money.

*Rightly cautions us to show a profound reverence for the word of God, which means not just accepting any Bible version that comes along.

*Rightly points out the problems of the history of the Catholic Church, which lessens its credibility. But some Catholics may point to Matthew 23:2-3 (KJV), "[Jesus] Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not." Likewise, if the Catholic church's bishops have the authority of the apostles, it could apply to them as well and be interpreted as, "The bishops and Popes sit in the apostles' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not."

In Brett Colton's ears, in his mind, the shrill keening of tornado sirens eclipsed all other sound, despite that he and Outlaw were too far into the backcountry for the sirens to be more than a figment of his imagination—his intuition warning him that this mission was a really stupid plan because there were a hundred ways to die in a storm this angry.

There was no fury in hell or on earth that compared to an Oklahoma thunderstorm when it decided to unleash a twister. The clouds above Tulsa churned, glowing gray green. Golf-ball-sized hail pelted Brett's Stetson and the back of his oiled leather duster. He folded forward, shielding Outlaw's neck and mane from the brunt of the hail's force as best he could, though neither man nor steed were strangers to the elements.

One of these days, Brett's guardian angels would give him up as a lost cause, but, God willing, it wasn't going to be today. Not with so much on the line. Not after everything his family had been through in the past month or the sharp edge of disappointment in his father's and brother's eyes when Brett had broken it to them about the downed fence and the missing cattle. As if Brett had let the herd loose on purpose. As if he was still the same reckless punk he'd been four months ago.

Then again, maybe Brett hadn't completely vanquished the recklessness from his blood, because here he was, racing across the rolling plains of the Lucky C ranch's backcountry, straight toward the deadly funnel forming in the distance. Any minute, a flash flood might come rocketing through, if lightning or a twister didn't hit down first, but he refused to return to the Lucky C homestead without the half dozen pregnant cows that had escaped.

The downed fence was a mystery that Brett would have to contemplate later. He'd checked that line himself the week before. All he knew was that the ranch that he'd once thought of as a fortress was no longer an impenetrable haven for his family, and the decades of peace and prosperity that the Coltons had enjoyed had been shattered beyond repair.

Brett had followed the tracks of the six stampeding cows southwest, keeping them in sight through the rain and the darkening sky, right up until the clouds had let loose with hail. With zero visibility and the cows' hoof-prints lost in the churned-up ground and melting balls of ice, he was riding with nothing to guide him but the hunch that the cows had headed toward Vulture Ridge, as the stock on the ranch had done so many times over the years. As long as they'd had enough sense to stop at the ridge instead of going over the edge—Lord, please don't let them have gone over the edge—Brett would find a way to get them back to the Lucky C before the twister touched down.

Outlaw expertly cut around scrub trees and boulders without losing speed until Vulture Ridge came into view.

"Gotcha," Brett said, though his words were lost in a crash of thunder.

Four of the cows crowded at the edge of the infamous gully, their hind hooves pawing at the muddy, disintegrating ledge and baying, clearly terrified. Brett slowed Outlaw to a trot and instead of closing in on the cows head-on, guided the horse in a wide arc. Then he rode along the ridge and came up on the cows from the side. Outlaw knew the drill, imposing his authority to the cattle, crowding and nudging them away from the edge.

Once they complied, Brett craned his neck to scan the expanse of prairie land for the remaining two cows. One, he spotted immediately, huddled against a boulder, but the other was nowhere to be seen. Fearing what he'd find, Brett turned his focus to the gully below Vulture Ridge that had been carved out by centuries of flash floods. The missing cow's ear came into view first, tagged with a green tag that meant she was a heifer—a young first-time mom who was probably beyond freaked out at the moment.

He dismounted and got closer to the edge. The heifer was perched on a narrow outcrop of dirt and rock ten feet below the lip of the ridge, lying on her side, propped against the ridge wall, her massive round belly undulating. She was in labor, and the way she was angled, when the calf was born, it would fall the additional ten feet or so into the gully's basin. That is, if the ledge didn't crumble and the heifer didn't fall herself, first.

This time, Brett's curse was loud enough to be heard over the storm. An older, seasoned cow might have been amenable to Brett's efforts to get her standing and help her pick her way out of the gully, but he already knew this heifer wasn't going to make his life easy like that. He was standing next to Outlaw, debating his options, when a thunderclap sounded so loudly that Brett's teeth rattled. The four cows they'd gathered immediately spooked and took off along the gully ridge.

Brett swung up into the saddle again. Shaking away the water and ice from his face, he set his teeth on his lower lip and whistled in the same tone he used on the livestock around the ranch, the one that often worked—in normal conditions, anyway—as a command for them to stop. These particular cows weren't interested in commands. If anything, they picked up their pace.

He gave another, different toned whistle command to Outlaw and the horse surged toward the cattle as Brett reached for his lasso. Throwing it in this weather would be a crapshoot at best, but he had to try. He secured the rope in his hands, then drove Outlaw faster, getting in front of the cows and cutting them off.

He waited until they were right up on the beasts to throw the lasso. It caught the neck of the farthest cow, just as it was supposed to, so he cinched it nice and tight and brought all four cows crowded between the lassoed cow and Outlaw's body.

"Thataway, Outlaw," he called over the wind and hail, stroking the gelding's neck. "Thataway."

They maneuvered the cattle to a cluster of shrubs not too far away from where the fifth cow was still huddled by the boulder. Brett swung off the saddle, then looped the other end of the rope around the neck of a second cow. He tied another rope around the necks of the third and fourth cows and hooked all the ropes into the branches of the sturdiest scrub tree. It wasn't all that secure, should another thunderclap spook them again, but it was the best he could do for now.

He left Outlaw standing near them, but refused to tie him to the tree, even if it meant Brett getting stranded should the gelding take off. Because what if the horse needed to flee with good reason? What if Brett didn't make it out of the gully alive? Brett would rather chance getting stranded than put his horse in any unnecessary danger, which was a vital part of the cowboy code he lived by.

Brett threaded his head and an arm through his last bundle of rope from his saddle bag, then stroked Outlaw's neck and got close to his ear. "You stay with the stock. Keep 'em calm for me until I get back." For all he knew, Outlaw understood every word. He liked to imagine that bit of magic, anyway.

It wasn't until he was slogging to the edge of Vulture Ridge that he realized how soaked-to-the-bones he was.

The muddy ground sucked at his boots, and his jeans felt as if they weighed twenty pounds. He flapped the tails of his duster around his body, then checked the collar to make sure it was standing on end, but still, bits of hail wormed their way between his collar and his hat to melt against his neck. Sniffing, his eyes downturned and marking each labored step, he put his shoulder to the wind and pressed on.

The heifer was lying on her side still, but didn't seem to have given birth yet. Her hooves hovered in midair over the gully that was rapidly filling with water. The path she'd slid down was steep, but wouldn't be impossible for her to traverse back up over the ridge—if he could get her standing again.

He was debating the merits of risking his life for a single livestock, when the heifer brayed, a pained, fearful cry. Then one of her hind legs and her tail lifted. The water sac was visible already.

"Holy day…" Brett muttered.

The calf was coming.

He slid down the mud wall following the same path the heifer had. There wasn't enough room on the ledge for both of them to fit comfortably. His boot heels cut into the dirt wall as he skirted her body to reach her tail. The calf's tail was crowning first.

"Damn it. This baby's not making it easy on you, is it, girl?" Brett wiped his muddy hands on his coat, then pushed the calf's rump back in. Working by feel, he located the hind legs and positioned them one at a time in the birthing canal.

The heifer brayed and kicked out. If they were at the ranch, Brett would've secured her in a head gate and called for help. All he had now was luck, a single rope and his wits, and he was going to need all three to birth the calf before it died.

He took off his coat and draped it over the heifer's face, hoping the reduction of stimulus from the rain and storm would calm her down. No luck. She kicked harder, and before Brett had gotten back in position near her tail, she tipped over the edge of the outcropping and slid into the rapidly-filling gully.

Brett followed, his rope in his hand. The water was three feet deep and rising. The rain and hail beat down relentlessly as the wind whipped up. Time to get this calf birthed and get the hell out of there before they all lost their lives. The cow, on her side in the gully, strained to keep her head above water. Brett slogged to her backside again, the water and mud caking his legs and seeping into his boots. He wrapped the rope around the calf's legs once, twice, three times.

He wiggled his boots into the riverbed, bracing himself, then got a firm hold of the rope and pulled, growling with the effort. The calf slid another four or five inches out. Panting, Brett adjusted his grip on the rope, then pulled again. This time, the calf came. Brett fell backward in the water, the calf on his chest.

With a laugh of triumph, Brett cleaned the calf's nose out with his finger, then tickled its ear to get it breathing. Then a golf-ball-sized piece of hail smacked Brett hard on his cheek, killing his awe over the miracle of helping birth a new life and reminding him of the danger all around them.

He pushed to his feet, bringing the calf up in his arms. He worked to untie the rope from the calf's hind legs with one eye on the steep side of the gully. The water was above Brett's knees, sloshing at his groin. He couldn't get the rope around the mama cow and keep his hold on the wiggling calf, so he'd have to come back down for her.

He'd pulled himself and the calf a good five feet up the gully wall when he heard it, a roar like no other he'd heard before. Not thunder, not a twister. Something otherworldly that got louder, closer. The gully walls vibrated with the force. A flash flood. Had to be.

In full panic mode, Brett hauled himself to the ledge that the cow had originally slid onto. He grabbed his duster from where the cow had tossed it away from her face. He threw it up to the top of the ridge, then hauled himself and the calf the rest of the way up, his fingers and boot toes digging into the muddy wall, pushing the calf up in front of him with his chest. He heaved the calf over the top of the ridge as a wall of water appeared in the gully, bearing down on their location.

Brett scrambled to safety and got on his knees. As fast as he could, he wound the rope back and set the lasso loop down to the mama cow. Maybe he could anchor her there so she wouldn't get swept away. Maybe the floodwaters weren't as high and fast as they looked.

The flash flood hit her hard, rolling her under. The rope pulled on him as though he was playing tug-of-war with a whole football team. There was nothing to do but let go. He'd heard too many accounts of ranchers getting swept into floodwater and drowning because they were too stubborn to lose their livestock.

Brett's legs were shaky and weak with an adrenaline crash as he stood, following with his gaze the glimpse of the cow's head in the water until she disappeared. The floodwaters gurgled and spit at the edge of the gully wall. He stared at the water, trying not to think of the loss as a failure. After all, he'd saved the calf, five pregnant cows and his own life.

He swung his attention to the boulder where he'd left the other cows and Outlaw. Outlaw was still there, but none of the cows. Damn it.

He pulled his drenched, muddy coat on, then lifted the calf into his arms again and trudged to his horse, his eyes on the storm front that looked to be moving away from them. At least one thing had gone his way today.

Outlaw nuzzled his cheek.

"Thanks for waiting for me," Brett said. "Happen to see which direction those cows went?"

Could've been his imagination, but Outlaw snorted in reply.

He scratched the horse's neck. "Good. How about you lead me to them so we can call it a day?"

He lifted the calf onto the saddle first, then hoisted himself up, the weight of the water and mud making him feel a good fifty pounds heavier than he had when he'd left the stable. The orphaned calf looked up at him, helpless and trusting. Brett usually didn't think of the livestock as cute, but this one surely was, with long lashes, a soft buttercream-colored coat and a pink nose. He wrapped his coat around it and held it close.

"We'll get you home soon and make you up a bottle as soon as we find your mama's friends. I do believe we're gonna name you Twister. How does that sound?"

The calf's tongue came out to lick a pebble of hail from its nose, the cutest thing Brett might've ever seen besides his nephew, Seth.

Jack, Brett's oldest brother, was going to be furious about the loss of the cow. Already, he didn't trust Brett, and this wasn't going to help. But Brett was tired of working under his brother like some hired hand, getting his butt chewed for every perceived misstep. He was ready to redeem his reputation and earn his slice of the Colton legacy—and he had just the plan to make it work. All he needed now was to hire a financial whiz to help him crunch the numbers and profit projections he'd need to help Jack see his point of view.

With a whistle and a nudge of Brett's boots, Outlaw burst into motion back through the storm toward home while Brett's mind churned, plotting and planning his next move to seize a hold of his bright future once and for all.

Delightful new to me romantic suspense series
By Jeanie Jackson
Melissa Cutler is a artist with romance and romantic suspense and Colton's Cowboy Code is a prime example of how she builds her characters and relationships to create a believable world filled with warmth, stresses, and danger.

When Hannah sets up a interview, she never imagines that it would be with her baby daddy or that he would envelop her in the warmth of his family. Or that her life would be endangered. One night celebrating her college graduation changes so much in the life of this young woman who has been pretty much bound by her too strict parents her whole life. Now it appears, she has the world at her feet. Ms. Cutler does not write cookie cutter stories, she creates world worth visiting.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Those are the only kinds of review I do, but it is a pleasure to be able to share my excitement in this book. I know she did not write all of the books in the series but will have to check out some of the others because she has made me care about he people.
I was disappointed at how difficult it was to find this book on Amazon. I finally went through Goodreads and had no trouble at all.

another great book!
By paula legate
This was a good story. It is part of (The Coltons of Oklahoma series) . In the first book of the series, Someone had attacked Brett's mother inside her room at the ranch. Throughout the book she was still in the hospital in a coma. The police was working the investigation. When the book ended she was still in the coma, and we still didn't know who attacked her.

I enjoyed Hannah, and Brett. They shared on hot night. That night lead to Hannah getting pregnant. The two acted like grown adults and became partners. it was a pleasure to read a book where the hero and heroine didn't fight. someone was after the Colton family, Hannah included. Brett and his brothers were determined to protect the family. I loved how the Colton family accepted Hannah, and thought of the baby that she carried as a miracle.
There was a little action, and the romance was sweet. Hannah was funny with her pregnant hormones, and cravings. I really enjoyed the Colton family. They are a close family. I've really enjoyed this series so far. Looking forward to reading the other books.

Good book
By S. Frank
Good book. Brett is the youngest of the Colton sons and has always felt like a disappointment to his parents. When he was younger, he expressed those feelings by living down to those expectations. After a car accident a few months ago woke him up, he has vowed to make changes in his life. He's now paying attention to his responsibilities on the ranch and has plans to expand the horse breeding side of the ranch. To that end, he's trying to hire an accountant who can help him with the business plan he'll need to convince the rest of the family.

Brett is surprised to discover that the accountant he's about to interview is the woman he had a one night stand with a few months earlier - and she's pregnant. Hannah is equally surprised by her potential employer. She's been waiting to contact him until she got her life back together. When her religious fanatic parents discovered she was pregnant they fired her from her job in their store and disowned her. Without a job, she lost her apartment and has been staying with a friend. This wasn't the way she wanted to tell Brett about his impending fatherhood.

Brett and Hannah really impressed me. There was no drama linked to the reveal. Brett doesn't accuse her of hiding the baby or trying to trap him into marriage, nor does Hannah accuse him of carelessness or anything like that. They talk about it calmly, as adults. I really liked the way that Brett is determined to take care of Hannah and the baby, and asks her to move to the ranch as well as take the job of accountant. Neither of them want to marry because "it's the right thing", as both have witnessed marriages that are not based on love and don't want that for themselves. Brett showed a great deal of protectiveness toward Hannah from the very beginning. I loved the way that he faced down his family the day that he told them about her.

The attraction between them is still hot. Hannah has accepted it, and really wouldn't mind acting on it again. As a matter of fact, she really wants to. But Brett is resisting just as hard as he can. He seems to look at giving in as continuing his previously irresponsible ways. He's also afraid that if they give in to the passion, if something goes wrong she'd leave the ranch and he wouldn't see his child. Having had his own absentee parent,he wasn't going to risk that happening. I really enjoyed seeing them grow closer through their desire to be good parents, and how eventually they realized their feelings for each other. The last chapter of the book was really sweet.

The suspense of the story was good. One part is the continuation from the first book. Brett's mother is still in the hospital from an attack that left her in a coma. They still don't know why she was attacked. There have been several attacks on the ranch, including a fire where photos from albums that were stolen from the house were found. There are also no clues about the identity of the baby bones that were found at the family cemetery. Some of the people are a little spooked because there has been a ghostlike woman spotted at various places around the ranch. Hannah has her own mystery that she's working on. While trying to bring order to the ranch books, she has noticed some irregularities that have her puzzled and concerned. She also has someone leaving her hateful messages. Brett is really worried about her safety. While the culprits for her issues were not a surprise, there were some really intense moments at the end. That resolution was pretty satisfying, at the same time the earlier issues are still unresolved. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

a good intro but lacked overall depth
By DMF
Because the topic of fire investigation is so broad and involves so many subject areas, the actual depth of information included was less than I expected. I would use this to allow operations personnel to gain a basic understanding of what to look for, preserve and protect at a scene where an investigator might be needed. In addition, the text allows operations personnel to understand a fire scene from the perspective of a fire investigator. As an intro text I think that the second edition works well, but it's just that -- an introduction to the field.

About the Author

David R. Hanson is a Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University with more than 20 years of research experience in programming languages. He has conducted research in conjunction with Bell Laboratories and is the co-author of lcc, a production quality, research compiler for the C language that is popular with the Unix community. lcc is presented and analyzed in the book A Retargetable C Compiler: Design and Implementation , by Christopher Fraser and David Hanson (c) 1995, Addison-Wesley.

Programmers are inundated with information about application programming interfaces, or APIs. Yet, while most programmers use APIs and the libraries that implement them in almost every application they write, relatively few create and disemminate new, widely applicable, APIs. Indeed, programmers seem to prefer to "roll their own" instead of searching for a library that might meet their needs, perhaps because it is easier to write application-specific code than to craft well-designed APIs.

I'm as guilty as the next programmer: lcc, a compiler for ANSI/ISO C written by Chris Fraser and myself, was built from the ground up. (lcc is described in A Retargetable C Compiler: Design and Implementation, Addison-Wesley, 1995.) A compiler exemplifies the kind of application for which it is possible to use standard interfaces and to create interfaces that are useful elsewhere. Examples include interfaces for memory management, string and symbol tables, and list manipulation. But lcc uses only a few routines from the standard C library, and almost none of its code can be used directly in other applications.

This book advocates a design methodology based on interfaces and their implementations, and it illustrates this methodology by describing 24 interfaces and their implementations in detail. These interfaces span a large part of the computing spectrum and include data structures, arithmetic, string processing, and concurrent programming. The implementations aren't toys - they're designed for use in production code. As described below, the source code is freely available.

There's little support in the C programming language for the interface-based design methodology. Object-oriented languages, like C++ and Modula-3, have language features that encourage the separation of an interface from its implementation. Interface-based design is independent of any particular language, but it does require more programmer willpower and vigilance in languages like C, because it's too easy to pollute an interface with implicit knowledge of its implementation and vice versa.

Once mastered, however, interface-based design can speed development time by building upon a foundation of general-purpose interfaces that can serve many applications. The foundation class libraries in some C++ environments are examples of this effect. Increased reuse of existing software - libraries of interface implementations - reduces initial development costs. It also reduces maintenance costs, because more of an application rests on well-tested implementations of general-purpose interfaces.

The 24 interfaces come from several sources, and all have been revised for this book. Some of the interfaces for data structures - abstract data types - originated in lcc code, and in implementations of the Icon programming language done in the late 1970s and early 1980s (see R. E. Griswold and M. T. Griswold, The Icon Programming Language, Prentice Hall, 1990). Others come from the published work of other programmers; the "Further Reading" sections at the end of each chapter give the details.

Some of the interfaces are for data structures, but this is not a data structures book, per se. The emphasis is more on algorithm engineering - packaging data structures for general use in applications - than on data-structure algorithms. Good interface design does rely on appropriate data structures and efficient algorithms, however, so this book complements traditional data structure and algorithms texts like Robert Sedgewick's Algorithms in C (Addison-Wesley, 1990).

Most chapters describe one interface and its implementation; a few describe related interfaces. The "Interface" section in each chapter gives a concise, detailed description of the interface alone. For programmers interested only in the interfaces, these sections form a reference manual. A few chapters include "Example" sections, which illustrate the use of one or more interfaces in simple applications.

The "Implementation" section in each chapter is a detailed tour of the code that implements the chapter's interface. In a few cases, more than one implementation for the same interface is described, which illustrates an advantage of interface-based design. These sections are most useful for those modifying or extending an interface or designing related interfaces. Many of the exercises explore design and implementation alternatives. It should not be necessary to read an "Implementation" section in order to understand how to use an interface.

The interfaces, examples, and implementations are presented as literate programs; that is, the source code is interleaved with its explanation in an order that best suits understanding the code. The code is extracted automatically from the text files for this book and assembled into the order dictated by the C programming language. Other book-length examples of literate programming in C include A Retargetable C Compiler and The Stanford GraphBase: A Platform for Combinatorial Computing by D. E. Knuth (Addison-Wesley, 1993).

Organization
The material in this book falls into the following broad categories:

Most readers will benefit from reading all of Chapters 1 through 4, because these chapters form the framework for the rest of the book. The remaining chapters can be read in any order, although some of the later chapters refer to their predecessors.

Chapter 1 covers literate programming and issues of programming style and efficiency. Chapter 2 motivates and describes the interface-based design methodology, defines the relevant terminology, and tours two simple interfaces and their implementations. Chapter 3 describes the prototypical Atom interface, which is the simplest production-quality interface in this book. Chapter 4 introduces exceptions and assertions, which are used in every interface. Chapters 5 and 6 describe the memory management interfaces used by almost all the implementations. The rest of the chapters each describe an interface and its implementation.

Instructional Use
I assume that readers understand C at the level covered in undergraduate introductory programming courses, and have a working understanding of fundamental data structures at the level presented in texts like Algorithms in C. At Princeton, the material in this book is used in systems programming courses from the sophomore to first-year graduate levels. Many of the interfaces use advanced C programming techniques, such as opaque pointers and pointers to pointers, and thus serve as nontrivial examples of those techniques, which are useful in systems programming and data structure courses.

This book can be used for courses in several ways, the simplest being in project-oriented courses. In a compiler course, for example, students often build a compiler for a toy language. Substantial projects are common in graphics courses as well. Many of the interfaces can simplify the projects in these kinds of courses by eliminating some of the grunt programming needed to get such projects off the ground. This usage helps students realize the enormous savings that reuse can bring to a project, and it often induces them to try interface-based design for their own parts of the project. This latter effect is particularly valuable in team projects, because that's a way of life in the "real world."

Interfaces and implementations are the focus of Princeton's sophomore-level systems programming course. Assignments require students to be interface clients, implementors, and designers. In one assignment, for example, I distribute Section 8.1's Table interface, the object code for its implementation, and the specifications for Section 8.2's word frequency program, wf. The students must implement wf using only my object code for Table. In the next assignment, they get the object code for wf, and they must implement Table. Sometimes, I reverse these assignments, but both orders are eye-openers for most students. They are unaccustomed to having only object code for major parts of their program, and these assignments are usually their first exposure to the semiformal notation used in interfaces and program specification.

Initial assignments also introduce checked runtime errors and assertions as integral parts of interface specifications. Again, it takes a few assignments before students begin to appreciate the value of these concepts. I forbid "unannounced" crashes; that is, crashes that are not announced by an assertion failure diagnostic. Programs that crash get a grade of zero. This penalty may seem unduly harsh, but it gets the students' attention. They also gain an appreciation of the advantages of safe languages, like ML and Modula-3, in which unannounced crashes are impossible. (This grading policy is less harsh than it sounds, because in multipart assignments, only the offending part is penalized, and different assignments have different weights. I've given many zeros, but none has ever caused a course grade to shift by a whole point.)

Once students have a few interfaces under their belts, later assignments ask them to design new interfaces and to live with their design choices. For example, one of Andrew Appel's favorite assignments is a primality testing program. Students work in groups to design the interfaces for the arbitrary-precision arithmetic that is needed for this assignment. The results are similar to the interfaces described in Chapters 17 through 19. Different groups design interfaces, and a postassignment comparison of these interfaces, in which the groups critique one anothers' work, is always quite revealing. Kai Li accomplishes similar goals with a semester-long project that builds an X-based editor using the Tcl/Tk system (J. K. Ousterhout, Tcl and the Tk Toolkit, Addison-Wesley, 1994).

Excellent, useful, timeless
By ThomasH
I second the many positive reviews about this book. If you architect and/or make software for a living, this book will give you a life long of useful ideas and provide with real running and working generic solutions. Foremost I was personally stunned by the implementation of the exception handler emulator, which I adopted ever since. Now I can look back at it's respectable 12 years of service with exemplary low "bug rate" and hundreds of millions in revenue gathered from products using this style of coding.

One issue was not mentioned by the most of other reviewers: This book is one of the now rare examples of "Literate Programming," a term coined by Donald Knuth, who implemented the "web system" with two programs Tangle and Weave. From the same source the one program generates code for a compiler, the other generates a book text for a text processing system. This way code and the literature about it are in perfect sync. Most importantly, the code showed in the book is a real tested and running implementation, not a mere pseudo code used by others so often, which may or may not be correct. See section 1.1 for a description of the system and typographical convention used by Prof. Hanson in his book.

For me this book is a classic. Timeless, even now 12 years since its date of release it is highly recommended for every practitioner at any level.

An embedded developer point of view
By Amazon Customer
A very good book also for the embedded field; you can't use much of the code in small 8bit microcontroller environments, but if you work with bigger 16/32bit microcontrollers many of the abstract data types (ADTs) described here can be useful. Maybe the "threads" interface can even be used as a base to develop a tiny cooperative embedded OS, too.

The title of the book is not exactly true: this is not a generic text on "C interfaces an implementation", it's a complete and detailed documentation of a well-projected C user level generic library, implementing a lot of ADTs that are not available in the C standard library but are available in many other high(er?) level languages.

You may like or not the semantic details and coding style, probably depending on your background: unix/linux programmers may not like it, as they may not like the ADTs prefix-verbosity...
It's a way to add modularity to a not-object-oriented language as C is; the same for the "typedef struct T *T" (opaque pointers) in headers: modularity and encapsulation.

Pseudocode notation (literate programming) is clear, as long as you read chapter 1.

Why overcomplicate things.
By Burak Selcuk Soyer
It is almost impossible to make everbody happy when presenting a book for the public. This one is a good example for making things more diffilcult than it is normally. Separating interface from implementation is not an ardous problem in C; there are a few techniques for doing this, like opaque pointers or the piml idiom. What is actually exhibited in this work is more or less the piml idiom implemented in the C language.
The author seems to have prefered a more academic and consequently a scientific style of writing and explanation of things around interfaces and its implementations. Really, the coding style is not easily accessible, hence at times troublesome to follow and crasp. The using of the letter T for the uncomplete types or abstract data types might make the reader somewhat uncomfortable in absorbing the examples given.
But as a whole, this book clearly and systematically demonstrates the plan how to implement abstract data types in C, which requires some patience and discipline to work them out.
