A beginer's trail guide

An excellent work. The wide selection of readings alone would cost quite a bit of money to assemble seperately. Major contributions by each philospher are summarized in a non-technical manner that is accesible by readers from all walks of life. One of the few books that approaches several major themes under one cover and manages to leave the reader with the seeds of interest rather than confusion and massive generalization. I first ran across the work in class and it has remained a springboard for all manner of reading and writing. All in all an excellent grounding for further study.

A great way to start thinking existentially

This is a very helpful, useful collection. Nowhere else will you find such generous selections from these four major contributors to the existentialist tradition. (Even though Sartre is the only one who adopted the label "existentialist," there is no doubt that all four thinkers are concerned with some similar problems and take some similar approaches.) Of course, a different editor might have made somewhat different selections, but anyone who reads the introductions and texts in this volume carefully will come away with a solid understanding of many major ideas of these philosophers -- and maybe a deeper understanding of his or her own life.

more life-changing than the Bible

A friend of mine let me borrow this book several years ago. When I started reading it I was an evangelical Christian, and when I finished, I was an agnostic atheist. I thought the translations were quite good, especially the excerpts from Nietzsche's "The Gay Science."

Although the transition from a person of faith to a person of reason took place over many years for me, the reading of this particular book marks perhaps the most defining moment of my life so far, and I could not have read it at a more appropriate time. I found the introductions to each section illuminating and helpful, and the actual writings were presented in a way that flowed from premise to conclusion and compressed two centuries of progressive existential humanistic thinking.

I highly recommend this book to everyone (even small children and babies, who can't read). Paraprosdokian.

Having wounded Drake in the bayous of Louisiana, Christian want’s nothing more than to find his old master and finish him, lifting the curse once and for all. But strange visons suggest he’s on the wrong path and the sudden arrival of FBI agent Kate Pfeiffer puts him in a difficult position.
To save Kate’s life, Christian infected her with the venom of his kind. Her wounds healed and she became otherwise immortal, but she’s now caught in the Half-Life: the agonizing transformation that accompanies the fall, as human warmth, emotion, and conscience are stripped away.
Knowing she’ll likely die or destroy herself before the change is complete, Christian takes her with him. If he can find and destroy Drake, Kate will be healed like all the others.
But Drake has not been idle. Not only is he recovering from his wounds, he’s now on the trail of a weapon called the Dark Star, a weapon so powerful that no man, angel or vampire can stand before it. As old as recorded history, and hidden for thousands of years, in Drake’s hand the Dark Star would become a weapon of subjugation with the power to destroy not only Christian and the Righteous Fire but the Angel of Redemption itself.

With the FBI and Righteous Fire hot on their trail, and Drake lurking in shadows up ahead, Christian and Kate race to find the Dark-Star. Danger stalks them on all sides, but the secrets buried in their hearts may prove to be the most deadly weapons of all.

There's so much tension during the chase that I have to put down the book for a breather.

Shadows Part 2, The Half-Life is as exciting, intriguing and suspenseful as its predecessor, Shadows of the Midnight Sun.

Two plots:

Kate's transformation with Christian at his side in her time of vulnerability; and

And the battle between Good and Evil continues......

Two sides, good or evil, four groups fighting for supremacy and power.
On one side, Christian Hanover with the Staff of Constantinople against Drake with Jacob's Stone, another side is Leroy doing the best he can to reform the undead, Henrich against Drake and Christian, as well as on the other side Akash.

Book 2 ends, am like a dangling participle, I need book 3. Graham, hurry up.

Savage vampire fun!

Part two of series was everything that I hoped. It picks up where the first book left off and runs wild with mystery and suspense. Christian goes through the ringer in his search for Drake, and the climactic showdown is brutal and awesome. I can't wait to see how things are wrapped up in book #3.

Marius S. Vassiliou is well positioned to have undertaken the compilation of this volume. He graduated from Harvard and then went on to earn a Ph.D, in geophysics from Caltech, an M.B.A. from the University of California in Los Angeles, and an M.S. in computer science from the University of Southern California.

Historical Dictionary of the Petroleum Industry is a useful reference tool for libraries and oil companies as well as for people working in the oil industry or in universities. The volume presents a systematic compilation of important events, places, people and institutions. Except for the seven mentioned above, that have shaped the modern petroleum industry worldwide. Outstanding!

This monumental historical dictionary of companies, people, places and events in the petroleum industry belongs in every college and university library, every public library, and in the company library of every firm in the industry. The 400+ well-written, information-rich entries in this 663-page dictionary feel like 4,000. They are encyclopedic and packed with cross-references. The dictionary also contains 14 appendices containing tables and charts. Typographically, the dictionary is beautiful. The dictionary was written by a former research geophysicist at ARCO Oil who has a PhD in geophysics from Caltech and an MBA from UCLA.

Great book!

I was lucky enough to have gotten my MA from the Granada Centre and to have studied under Paul Henley. Jean Rouch is his favorite, by far, of all the 'classic' ethnographic filmmakers, and this shows in just simple conversation with Henley.
The book is well-written and is an easy read, something you can mull over before bedtime, in contrast to some other cluttered or jargon-full biographies of Rouch.
Comprehensive and thought-inducing, it's prefect if you want to learn more about cine-trance, cinema-verite, or anthropological filmmaking in general.

Great book, great author, and fascinating subject.
