A decent starting place

This is a decent place for a novice to start with interpretation of soil test results. The first half of the book is spent on a pretty basic overview of the function of nutrients and general ideas for balancing them in different soil types. The entire 2nd half of the book is sample test results and an accompanying analysis (ie: practical examples).

I have a few problems with the text. Personally I'm not a fan of reprinting material verbatim that is available for free online - it just always feels lazy to me. Woven into the 1st half of the text are brief essays that were previously published in the Logan Labs soil newsletter. I also found it very annoying that the sample soil test results often appear many pages after they are initially discussed. I'd rather see the results up front and have the analysis follow so that I can bookmark the result and move back and forth - rather than trying to skim ahead and find it. I also wish the 2nd half of the book had been distilled into a more abstract ruleset. The practical examples are nice (and will be particularly helpful for some people) but I would rather have an entire book devoted to that (some kind of workbook or companion) and have a more compact and incisive work just on the logic/rules/approach to interpretation.

It's not bad and it does live up to its description: it's practical and it does offer good advice. I would say that if you're spending money on a soil test and getting back very basic analysis or none at all - then this will be money well spent. But the book could be much better than it is. More detailed, denser, concise, smaller print, etc.

Of all the military campaigns fought by the British during the 19th century, no area saw more conflict than the subcontinent of India. Dozens of encounters, both great and small, involved many of its races as either friends or foes of Britain - indeed, it was not unusual for an area to furnish both ally and enemy at the same time! This volume covers the British, Indian and Anglo-Indian troops who fought for The Honourable East India Company and Britain over the varied landscape of what is present day Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, between the years 1826 and 1859.

The vast array of uniforms and dress worn by soldiers serving in India during this period is examined in detail, and extensive information is also provided on regimental Colours. The book's nine chapters cover the campaign in Bhurtpore (1825-26); the Coorg campaign (1834); the First Afghan War (1839-42); the conquest of Sind (1843); the campaign against Gwalior (1843); the Sikh Wars (1845-46 and 1848-49); actions on the North-West Frontier (1849-58); the Santhal Rebellion (1855-56); and the Indian Mutiny (1857-59).

Each of these chapters includes uniform information specific to the campaign covered, while that on the Indian Mutiny also includes details of Mutineer dress. Many orders of battle and battle-plans are also included. Illustrations comprise 199 drawings of troop types and flags, and 27 other illustrations and maps

This book covers some of the forgotten wars that the British Empire has fought on the Indian subcontinent.Although an Englishman or an Indian might remember them, they remain largely unknown to Americans.(who don't much remember their own history!)
As in other books in this series,the emphasis is on the dress of the combattants,with some maps and order of battle information.The book only covers the Brtish and the Indians who fought beside them- the Indians and other enemies of the Raj will be covered in another book(waiting for that one...)
In order the chapters are,The Seige Of Bhurtpore 1825-26,The Coorg Campaign 1834,The First Afgan War 1839-42,The Conquest Of Sind 1843,Gwalior 1834,The Sikh Wars 1845-46 and 1848-49,(Britain's toughest fight,until the Mutiny.)The North-west Frontier 1849-58,The Santhal Rebellion 1855-56( so obscure the author had trouble finding any references to it!)And finaly the Indian Mutiny 1857-59, wich shook the Empire to it's core.

This book is great. It gives the history of the British rule in India. From 1825 to 1857, each battle with maps. Great pictures and descriptions of uniforms worn by each regt. Also description of Indian troops during each period of conflict. Highly recommend for figure painters.

A great read! Really enjoyed expanding my knowledge of corporate strategy especially from a business level, incorporating day-to-day decisions and resources to form more strategic outcomes. What really stuck with me were the 'brilliant tip' inserts in each chapter which really encapsulate the key strategic messages Chris is trying to get across. It is definitely a book for everyone. Whether you consider yourself a corporate individual or are potentially looking to start a business of your own, have a read of this book and you'll definitely find a strategist within you!

This is a great framework and overview of the key components for implementing operational excellence, particulalrly in servce and knowledge worker sectors... whets your appetite for more detail with some gresat references.

I plan to use it as a core introductory text to our "Journey to Operational Excellence" program.

Make The Customer More Successful

Happy customers will help your company be successful. But if you can make YOUR CUSTOMER more successful, the payback to you can be manyfold. Would you like to figure out how to do this?

Chris Ahoy has figured it out. His book is based on his own experience in managing the physical facilities department at Iowa State University over the past 12 years. Chris and his organization have won numerous awards and have built a solid reputation for customer service at its best. He has documented his own success and shown others how to do it.

The book is really about how to be an outstanding LEADER, describing in a logical fashion all the elements that go into that task. All the normal management buzzwords are present - organizational design, transforming the workspace, metrics, systems approach, and all the rest. What sets this book apart from the competition is the way that Ahoy has organized every chapter and every section around three broad themes: (1) satisfy the customer, (2) delight the customer, and (3) make the customer successful.

You will have to read the book yourself to see how theme #3 is handled. This is what makes the book unique.

If I were to criticize the book in any way, it would be that maybe the author has tried to be a bit too all-inclusive. He has provided "the shell" of a complete management handbook but hasn't filled in all the details of every aspect of that shell to make a true handbook. Considering the cost and size of the book, he couldn't! The book is only 272 pages long. But to compensate for this brevity in some of the areas (notably in Chapter 11 on quality tools) , the author has provided many useful references to point the reader in the right direction to fill out the shell for himself/herself. The book is solid, and the ideas that Ahoy presents really do work. He proved it in his own job!

As Practical As It Gets For Any Organization's Attempt At Achieving Excellence

As a Quality professional overseeing the day-to-day operation and long-term strategic focus of an ISO9001:2008-based Business Management System, I'm always looking for practical, real-world ideas I can use to enhance my organization's performance. As I have found over the years, there's no absence of material in the published realm addressing organizational performance improvement, some of it eminently practical and truly implement-ready, and some... well... decidedly less so. And because we're a service organization with no involvement with manufacturing in any way, I've found some material unsuitable for our somewhat unique environment. Then, almost out of the blue, comes a work like this, written by someone with real `street cred' and the actual award-winning results to back it up.

Someone once stated `... Knowledge without practical application is useless...', and I think it fair to say that's an unstated subtext of this work.

Some years ago, I had an opportunity to meet Chris Ahoy, tour his operation at Iowa State University, and experience, first-hand, what I think are the truly spectacular results of his efforts and those of his team. We spent several hours together afterwards discussing the theories and concepts that eventually came together in this book. I was significantly impressed then -- I remain significantly impressed now. In my view, what Chris has brought to the forefront has been driven by his real-world, hands-on experience, his inquisitive `how-does-this-work-and-how-can-it-work-better?'|continual improvement nature, and perhaps most important of all, his seemingly endless passion and enthusiasm for seeking excellence and modeling it in his organization and to all those with whom he interacts.

Bottom line? He's the `real deal' -- a genuine `student of the game' -- and his insights documented here and elsewhere are ones I value highly. Without reservation, therefore, I recommend this book to anyone interested in developing a practical plan to help their organization achieve sustainable success.

Good Information but out of my range

Personally, I thought the book was rather good. Some of the ideas this book provides are so simple and effective that you are amazed that you never thought of it before. The person who wrote it clearly has much experience in living in the woods with nothing, though. I didn't find many of the explanations to complete or clear enough. In addition, I live in Connecticut. The author really focuses on surviving in the desert and similar areas. This would make sense, as he was born in the Southwest, but for people like myself, this applies very little to the completely different woodland terrain.

Survival skills

I have read many survival books including: Wilderness Survival; the October 1970 edition of the Army Feild Manual; Living off the Country;Tom Brown's Feild Guide to Wilderness Survival;and this one as well as many others. Aside from Tom Brown's feild guide, this book is definately one of the best I have read. I would rate Tom Brown's feild guide higher than this one, but the two together make a great pair. Both cover topics such as the four great needs: shelter, water, fire, and food, as well as weapons, edible plants and animals et cetera, but they both explain different techniques and different ways of doing the above mentioned topics. The back of this book has color photos of many plants that are edible.
I strongly reccommend buying both books, they are very similar yet you can learn more from both than you can from just one.
If you don't wan't both then I reccommend Tom Brown's Guide. Either way you go, try to use your library and the internet in conjunction with the books.

good book

All the chapters were difinitely helpful. The colorplate of plants in the back stated what you could use each plant for. However, when it mentioned if a plant was medicinal or not, it didn't give you any info on how they where medicinal or what they could do or how to use them. Overall a Very informative book about surviving in the wilderness.
