About the Author
Roza El-Eini was an undergraduate at University College and the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, gaining a B.Sc. (Hons); and has an M.Litt. from the Faculty of Modern History, Middle East Centre, St Anthony's College, Oxford University; and a PhD. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her PhD. was awarded First Prize in a National competition in Israel for the year 2000 by the Dr Aharon and Advocate Josef Ben-Shamesh Fund. Dr El-Eini is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

A nice study

This is a compact and important study of all the aspects of landscape during the Palestine Mandate(1917-1948). It covers agriculture, Land laws, forestry, the land system, the partition plans and there is a special case study of the Shephalah, the Palestine Piedmont area on the Coastal plain. An important contribution to the field of study of Palestine in the 20th century, an excellent and interesting view of the Mandate, one that seperates politics from reality, a welcomed addition therefore to reading on Palestine and the land that became Israel.

Love the ending book!!!!!!!!

This is a great ending to the Blackmoon Beginnings it tells the after math of the battle in everyone's characters point of view!!! I thank Kaitlyn Hoyt for the wonderful series and a very great job in the finishing book. We get to know the characters a lot more and the past of everyone the the others. Great Job Kaitlyn Hoyt I give the series 5 stars and I recommend it for kids like me!!! Keep up the great work!!!!

FUN Series!

1st up - read the books in order as they truly are part of a series and truly aren't standalone.

2nd - the series is just plain FUN for a teenaged girl, but there is some serious violence (including death) so this doesn't qualify for a PG13 rating, in my opinion.

3rd - The main heroine is what every normal teen girl wants to be - beautiful, skilled and gifted in almost every way she could imagine. The main heroine grows in a variety of ways from an "ugly duckling into a beautiful swan" - another aspect of fantasy hope for a teen.

4th - Yes, the author is an immature writer and it shows with poor sentence syntax, grammatical errors up the wazoo (wrong words, missing words, added words, etc.), plus long dialogue where you've no idea who is speaking until the very end ... and so forth.

It all makes for an extremely challenging reading environment and there-in lies one of the major drawbacks of the series.

5th - there are truly some laugh out loud moments. The author has a good sense of humour and allows it to play out through many of the characters in the storyline.

6th - I'm a gramma of a mid-teenaged granddaughter and while I wouldn't want her sleeping with a boyfriend for any reason at her age, I can fully respect that the love interests in this series are ONLY just sleeping together and not having sex until marriage (as far as we know, anyway).

7th and final - Hopefully, this new author will find a quality and qualified editor to attend any future work ... and maybe even tidy up this series of books for future readers.

It took me five days to complete the entire series and I don't regret a single word I read. This author created such a incredible series that I am now a forever fan of hers. It was funny, witty, heartwarming, frustrating, heartbreaking, had to stop myself from reading because I was crying moments, and many more type of emotions wrapped up nicely in a incredible journey. :)

About the Author

As a child, Ravynne Phelan (also known as Michele-lee Phelan) dreamed of becoming an artist, but fell into despair in her teenage years when many told her a career in art was an unattainable dream. For the next fourteen years she lived in a world empty of color until she was officially diagnosed with depression and introduced to art therapy. With her childhood dreams rekindled at 33 years of age, she became a professional artist and illustrator. In 2011, Michele-lee became Ravynne, to celebrate and honor the magical
path she has walked in service to Gaia and Great Spirit, and to mark the end of her battle with depression.

STunning, soul stirring artwork - too small format.

Ravynne Phelan is a gifted metaphysical artist - whose gifts are offered to us through hard won spiritual and material journeys. Every image is meticulously detailed and weaves elemental and otherworldly melodies together in a symphony of color, texture, hidden meaning and soul solace to assist in the deep questioning we are all pulled by our Soul to do.

My disappointment upon receiving the cards is that they are simply WAY TO SMALL and needed perhaps a better color printer/ publisher and design decision team in terms of the size. The size gets in the way of showcasing the extraordinary skillset of the artist and in the way of my ability to deeply dive into a state of receptive presence to the gifts my subconscious and LIfe have for me in the discovery session of the cards. The color of her artwork is also not as well represented on the images on her website and again these design/publishing issues take away from the rightful power that could be better delivered. Ms Phelan's artstic skill in manifesting such extraordinary beings and detailed images of inspiration and healing would be greatly enhanced by a larger format card and better color print quality and I really hope that her new Tarot will consider these issues.

This is one of my favorite decks. The art is beautiful and unique. Ravynne Phelan is an incredible artist. The messages for each card are clear and resonate very well with the card images. Each card is full of symbolism and amazing imagery. Ravynne Phelan also has a tarot deck that comes out next year which is going to be just as fantastic as this deck. Get it. It will quickly become a favorite.

While our culture generally trusts experts and distrusts the wisdom of the masses, New Yorker business columnist Surowiecki argues that "under the right circumstances, groups are remarkably intelligent, and are often smarter than the smartest people in them." To support this almost counterintuitive proposition, Surowiecki explores problems involving cognition (we're all trying to identify a correct answer), coordination (we need to synchronize our individual activities with others) and cooperation (we have to act together despite our self-interest). His rubric, then, covers a range of problems, including driving in traffic, competing on TV game shows, maximizing stock market performance, voting for political candidates, navigating busy sidewalks, tracking SARS and designing Internet search engines like Google. If four basic conditions are met, a crowd's "collective intelligence" will produce better outcomes than a small group of experts, Surowiecki says, even if members of the crowd don't know all the facts or choose, individually, to act irrationally. "Wise crowds" need (1) diversity of opinion; (2) independence of members from one another; (3) decentralization; and (4) a good method for aggregating opinions. The diversity brings in different information; independence keeps people from being swayed by a single opinion leader; people's errors balance each other out; and including all opinions guarantees that the results are "smarter" than if a single expert had been in charge. Surowiecki's style is pleasantly informal, a tactical disguise for what might otherwise be rather dense material. He offers a great introduction to applied behavioral economics and game theory.

Surowiecki first developed his ideas for Wisdom of Crowds in his “Financial Page” column of The New Yorker. Many critics found his premise to be an interesting twist on the long held notion that Americans generally question the masses and eschew groupthink. “A socialist might draw some optimistic conclusions from all of this,” wrote The New York Times. “But Surowiecki’s framework is decidedly capitalist.” Some reviewers felt that the academic language and business speak decreased the impact of the argument. Still, it’s a thought-provoking, timely book: the TV studio audience of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire guesses correctly 91 percent of the time, compared to “experts” who guess only 65 percent correctly. Get answers to many of life's questions

I am 83 yrs old and have had many unanswered questions in my life. This book factually answers a number of those questions. The one it answered resoundingly was "who should vote". If you read this book you will know the answer! I have read a great deal of human history -- Mitchner, Steinbeck, Hemmingway, Tolstoy & Eric Hoffer among others. History is what people did as the result of an action, mainly by governments and/or religions. The other area of my study is religions, by this, I mean what religious leaders have done to people in the mane of "God".
What I have studied are the subjects that give you knowledge that governments and religions have controlled for their benefit.
It is a hard read at points but well worth it!!!!

Mixed bag

Good insights, but little consistency or follow-through. Evidence is presented that private information is good for predictions at a group level. Evidence is also presented that utility-maximizing, self-intetested economic actors ("free-riders," those most in-line with the homo economicus of neoclassical theory) destroy cooperation and therefore diminish group-level outcomes. This suggests an overarching conclusion, that society would be better off acting on the aggregated private information of its members so long as they use that information for the good of society. That would be a very interesting assertion, one challenging to both socialists and libertarians, and one that could provoke new and important research. Yet that assertion is never made. The insights in this book are valuable, but never tied together in a coherent whole. Instead, markets and prosociality are both lauded in predictable Third Way triumphalisms. Worth the read, but consider the ways the evidence do and do not gell with the arguments when you do read it.

Hoped for more from this book

I was disappointed. Although intriguing ideas and experiments were presented, I think the author's connection from the experiments to real-world instances was over-stated. Many of the experiments were tightly controlled and thus one-dimensional; I am not convinced that the correlation to messy life is as direct. In some ways, he alludes to this in writing about small groups, committees, etc. In that section, he writes about how a group can be hi-jacked by a member of the team, or how a group lacking diversity -- or openness to a consideration of alternative views -- can be led away from "right" or "good" decision-making.

So what is the point? To know that a diverse group has the potential for an aggregate "wise" decision is okay. But real useful information was missing: how can you assess whether a group is a good one, could a leader maximize the potential of a group, can a group member who understands these things work effectively within a group that by engrained habit isn't functioning to its greatest capacity? I initially ordered this book because I wanted to make sense of contentious work group; it wasn't of much use beyond "well, that was sort of interesting."

He served as Designer and Supervisor for all 2D and 3D visual effects on the television series Silverwing, and Chaotic at Bardel Animation in Vancouver. He has also designed and directed a wide variety of television commercials. Clients include General Motors, CocaCola, Honda, MacDonald's, Gillette, Players Tobacco, Larrouse Dictionaries, and Radio Quebec. For almost three years, he was the Head of animation, and Digital Character animation at the Vancouver Film School. He lectures at animation schools in Canada, Europe and Asia, and has conducted workshops at animation festivals and schools around the world. he is a professional musician and performer as well. He has been writing professionally for over three years now, and has a bi-monthly column in the online Animation World Magazine, entitled 'The Animated Scene' which has an enormous readership around the world. He has also had articles published in Animation Magazine, the world's foremost industry magazine, as well as well as an article in 'Cartoons' The International Journal of Animation.

Much like the first

Volume II has a lot of the same things that Volume I had. In many cases there is more detail. The first 1/2 of the book deals almost entirely with water--splashes, waves, etc. and the second half has a lot more to do with fire (and smoke). As it turns out, fire and water should be animated in much the same way, so I guess that makes sense. There is a fair amount of repetition between the first and second volumes. My recommendation would be to start with volume II and, if you really like it, get volume I. If you already have Volume I and would like a few more details, then I would recommend volume II. If you already have vol I and for whatever reason, you don't like it much, I wouldn't recommend this as it is more of the same. For those not already familiar with the series, you should know that it is a book of lots and lots of pictures with some good explanations of what is going on. I think this is a great way to do an informative "drawing" book. You should already have some artistic ability and a good eye--what this will teach you is to take those abilities and start animating the everyday things that are so difficult to get to look natural. Recommended if you already can draw and you're just wanting to make your animations look more real.

More practical than Volume 1

If you can only buy one of these books, I would recommend getting this book rather than Volume 1. Both books cover a lot of the same material, but this one has very well-crafted tutorials. If you are attempting to develop your technique in the animation of fire and water (very difficult things to successfully animate) this book will guide you. The best thing is that the tutorials are not software-specific - you can use them with any animation tools you use.

This book is a must-have for anyone interested in animation.

Not bad, but not great

I've had this book for a while now and it's difficult to review on it's own, since technically it is part of a set. And also there really are no books out there specifically on this subject (that I'm aware of) so there's not much to compare it to. First off, if you didn't like the first book, you probably won't like this one. It's very similar and there is some overlapping material. There are some very good aspects to this book, but I have some issues with it: One, literally a third of the book is taken up by animating a splash, and two: I can't help but feel if both books were presented in a slightly more focused fashion it could've all fit into one book. For example in the chapter on fire he goes into a lot of scientific detail on combustion, which from a practical point of view, didn't do me any good and didn't need to be there.

His overall teaching/presentation style is often a little wordy and not as focused as in some other animation books I have. I agree this is complicated stuff, but probably no more so than animation in general. It's just different. Also, there is a LOT of wasted space in the book. Some of the pages have big, clear pictures in it, which is great, but there are many pages where the type only takes up like half of a page because the margins are so far in, and there is some random illustration on the page that doesn't show how to animate anything, it's just for decoration. Feels very padded at times. And lastly, the companion website that is supposed to exist, doesn't. I went to the address it listed and there is nothing there.

If you are really needing in-depth instruction on animating special effects then you'll probably want to pick this up. The fact that there isn't really any competition makes your choice pretty clear. Not what I'd hoped, but certainly has some good info in it.

Balanced, Biblical Approach to Dating, Marriage, and Sex

The Mingling of Souls: God's Design for Love, Marriage, Sex & Redemption - Matt Chandler with Jared C. Wilson

The scope of this book runs from the beginning to the end of a relationship. Starting with attraction, Chandler works his way through each phase of romantic relationships: attraction, dating, courtship, wedding, sex, fighting, romance, and commitment. It is a holistic look at what a Godly relationship looks like as conveyed through the Song of Solomon. Overall Chandler gives a balanced, Biblical, and practical take on dating, marriage, and beyond.

Highlights

I think one of the most helpful and needed discussions in the book was on the idea of the "one." In the chapter on marriage ("Wedding Bells") Chandler says this:

"I just see no reason to agree with the worldly romantic notion that every person has just one 'soul mate' out there waiting for him or her. In fact, I find that idea to be anticovenantal, contrary to grace... It turns the search for a godly spouse into an audition to be the one who 'completes' you... No spouse can complete you. Don't look for a spouse to do what only Jesus can." (pg 106-107)

He goes on to say that whomever you marry is the "one" for you. This is such a refreshing take on the popular romantic ideal that is so prevalent in our culture, even Christian culture. Chandler doesn't deny the sovereignty of God working in our lives, but denies the pagan idea that someone "completes us." And he emphases the covenantal relationship of marriage by illustrating that the "one" is the one you chose to marry.

Chandler's distinction between dating and courtship is also extremely helpful. The cynicism in me runs deep when it comes to the idea of courtship because of works like "I Kissed Dating Goodbye." The way Chandler deals with it however is quite refreshing. He spells it out this way: dating is the "get to know you" phase of the relationship, and courtship is the "let's head toward marriage" phase of the relationship. Essentially the difference in dating and courting is the intention behind it, not necessarily certain actions. This is helpful because it removes the pressure from dating and the awkwardness from courtship.

Another strong point of the book is the dealing with marriage being a representation of Christ and the Church. I think this so often gets lost in the "romantic love" part of marriage. Christ's commitment to the Church is the same commitment that spouses are to have to one another. The way Christ gave himself up for the Church is the same way a husband is to give himself for his wife, sacrificially. The love that spouses are to have for one another is the love that Christ has for His Church; committed, delighting, faithful love.

Chandler also does a good job of not leave things in the theoretical sphere, but also offers practical advice throughout the book. The strongest section of practical advice is on conflict, or "Fighting Fair" to use his language. He borrows a good portion of it from other authors but it is very practical and Biblical. Honestly the majority of advice he offers could be used in any relationship, not just marriage.

Critiques

The one critique that I can offer is on the chapter about sex. As a whole the chapter was very good. He had great things to say about healthy sex within marriage, but if felt somewhat one sided. It's typical in dealing with sex for authors to focus primarily on males and I was hopeful that Chandler would address both genders equally. While he does address women, the main emphases seems to be directed at men. While he did a better job than most, it still felt a little one sided.

Final Thoughts

As a whole I really enjoyed the book, especially the final chapter, which I found to be the most inspirational. While I am yet to be married, the thought of finishing well in marriage is something that is very appealing. It is something that I know I want to strive to achieve. Chandler gave a great call for all to do so and practical advice for how to do so. I pray that I one day have the opportunity to finish well and am faithful to the end.

Matt Nails It on Marriage

Matt Chandler's greatest assets are his accessibility and bluntness: two important qualities when writing about issues like these. Not every evangelical preacher would feel as comfortable writing about marriage, and certainly, very few would be as enjoyable to read. His style of ministry is well suited for the topic.

The scope addressed is marriage from beginning to end. Chandler starts with attraction and takes the reader through friendship, dating, courtship, marriage, and old age.

The source is the Song of Solomon. Chandler avoids being too technical and writing a commentary, while also avoiding the other extreme of over-practicality, turning God's Word into a "how-to" manual for romancers. No, in a very balanced way, Matt takes the truths he discovered in an in-depth study of the Song, and distills them through life experience. The finished product, "Mingling of Souls" then becomes Biblically accurate for your relationship and practical in your relationship.

As an engaged Christian who is seeking honest, Scriptural advice for this new phase of my life, I am grateful to the Lord that I stumbled onto Matt's new book in the Life way magazine last month. Matt's honesty in presenting the things he does, coupled with his accessibility in his presentation, will have a definite, Christ-honoring impact on my married life.

This book is for interested singles, to make you think about the serious nature of the marriage covenant. This book is for engaged couples, who need honest wisdom spoken into their lives about conflict, unrealistic expectations, and the roadblocks ahead. This book is for married people, so they can get their life together back on track God's way. If you fall into any of those categories, purchase "Mingling of Souls."

In a sea of very well meaning Christian single, dating, and marriage book, Chandler's stands out among the rest! His honesty, humor, and organization make the book enjoyable to read, rather than feel as if you're being berated, lectured, or following a manual, like many others in this genre. Yet, Chandler's supreme understanding of both Song of Solomon and the human mind and heart are what makes this book truly life changing. He runs through the material smoothly, dissecting at the exact right places, and often saying what everyone is thinking or afraid to admit. This book feels like a relaxing read, a conversation with God and a session with a counselor all at once. Reviving, life-giving and relieving.

A Space Opera worth reading.

This novel is a a great, fun space opera. Set only 150 years in the future, the geo-politics and more importantly the technology might be a little advanced but only if you think really hard about it. For the most part this is not an issue since the story keeps you turning pages. The author builds his world slowly, but always hints at the depth he has built into it. There are only a few info-dumps in the story and they are kept to the minimum information needed to advance the story. Most of the time you are given enough info to figure things out but are not hit over the head with it. The main character is well developed and one or two other important characters are as well, but most of the secondary characters are left undeveloped (probably unavoidable given how much happens and the size of the novel).

The big flaw in the novel is editing. The edition I have (sorry Amazon, I got it from somewhere else), could have used an editor. Several times there are sentences that don't quite make sense. I could always figure out what the author meant to say, but it pulled me out of the story while I was doing it. Not a fatal flaw, but it is a shame in an otherwise fine effort. Still I recommend this to anyone who enjoys space operas.

Not bad.

Not a bad novel by any stretch, kept me turning pages. I was a bit thrown off by Our Hero's sexual inclinations because I didn't feel like it was at all an important plot point and the depiction of certain groups is treated with a moral dissonance that glosses over a lot of recent history, but overall I felt it was a good read.

The "outsiders" turn out to be a Jewish conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of the one world government. I am not joking at all. It went from being a fairly mediocre science fiction book (if a cut above most self published works) to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

The outsiders are a secret Jewish colony on the moons of Jupiter, funded by a Jewish corporate network, the records of the mass emigration lost when a massive solar flare hit earth and subsequent collapse of infrastructure and nuclear war. These new Jewish colonies travel in golden spaceship that are covered internally in engraved Hebrew scripture. They shoot down ships that intrude on their territory. The new one world government knows about them and has some contact with them, and uses them as mysterious aliens to distract from the problems on earth.

Science fiction as a whole does not have a good track record with how it handles race, but this stands out as a real shocker by burping out conspiracies from the 1930s as core plot points.
