Tinkering toward Utopia: A Century of Public School Reform, by David Tyack, Larry Cuban

For over a century, Americans have translated their cultural anxieties and hopes into dramatic demands for educational reform. Although policy talk has sounded a millennial tone, the actual reforms have been gradual and incremental. Tinkering toward Utopia documents the dynamic tension between Americans' faith in education as a panacea and the moderate pace of change in educational practices.

In this book, David Tyack and Larry Cuban explore some basic questions about the nature of educational reform. Why have Americans come to believe that schooling has regressed? Have educational reforms occurred in cycles, and if so, why? Why has it been so difficult to change the basic institutional patterns of schooling? What actually happened when reformers tried to "reinvent" schooling?

Tyack and Cuban argue that the ahistorical nature of most current reform proposals magnifies defects and understates the difficulty of changing the system. Policy talk has alternated between lamentation and overconfidence. The authors suggest that reformers today need to focus on ways to help teachers improve instruction from the inside out instead of decreeing change by remote control, and that reformers must also keep in mind the democratic purposes that guide public education.

Review
No society has ever, at any time, tried to bring such a variety of people to so high a level of proficiency as this country has, or come as close to success as we have. American educational criticism suffers from a shocking lack of perspective, historical and cross-cultural...David Tyack and Larry Cuban...do recognize [this fact], and it's that understanding that makes their aptly titled book so important...Surely the message Tyack and Cuban are trying to deliver is crucial: understand the political nature of school reform; involve teachers; understand how complex the process is and how much thought and patience it takes; learn from the past. When we try to use radical school reform to solve whatever public problem seems most urgent--that endless cycle of educational crisis, utopian demand and disillusionment--we fail both our schools and our society. (Peter Schrag Nation)

Superb...[Tyack and Cuban] calmly put the dense tomes of the education experts in clear perspective. [They] note how Americans have always looked to the nation's schools, with mixed results, to solve certain social, political and economic problems. (Sara Mosle New Republic)

[This] is a book that should appeal to, and be read by, a wide audience: connoisseurs of millennial zeal; policy advisers; even chief inspectors of schools. Anyone, in fact, who is interested in the realities of reforming state education (known, of course, as public school education in the US) and the lessons that can be drawn from the past 100 years in America. Two insights have particular relevance. The first is that: "Good schools can play an important role in creating a just, prosperous and democratic society, but they should not be scapegoats and are not panaceas"...The second insight is equally important. The political will might be strong; the social conviction passionate. "The journey from policy talk to what occurs in schools and classrooms", however, is "long, often unpredictable and complicated." (Chris Woodhead (Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools) New Statesman)

In their splendid little book Stanford University Professors David Tyack and Larry Cuban adopt a radical approach to the ongoing crisis in the American public school system: listen to the teacher, let the teacher decide. Thus is the conclusion of this succinct, but hard-hitting history of reform of public schools in the United States over the last hundred years...This book is...a revelation. (Kevin White American Studies)

If I could place one book before the many people--from legislators to business and civic groups--calling for school reform, it would be Tinkering toward Utopia. It is a wise and sobering book. Tyack and Cuban raise caution about the quick fix or the "visionary" solution and remind us of the power of the hard, day-to-day human work of social change. (Mike Rose, author of Possible Lives: The Promise of Public Education in America)

The authors...are two of the brightest minds in American education. Mr. Tyack is the best education historian...Mr. Cuban...is one of the United States" leading experts in the problems of school organization and structure...This is a bold, cobweb-clearing book that challenges many of the assumptions that Americans have about their schools. Anyone seriously interested in education reform ought to read it. (Washington Times)

This accessible examination of the reasons for and effects of such wide-ranging historic reforms as graded schools, IQ testing, school site management, and ability grouping helps to put many of today's proposals for improving schools in sharper focus. (Diane Manuel San Jose Mercury News)

Tinkering toward Utopia belongs in a special genre of books about education by historians. The genre does not represent history as such but draws on a deep base of historical knowldge to address wider issues of educational policy. David Tyack and Larry Cuban have successfully written a difficult book, one that demonstrates how historical perspectives can reconstruct a policy discourse...The arguments advanced here have two powerful assumptions, generally ignored in the historiography of education. First, policy making can only be understood as an ongoing "interaction"; a significant event changes all participants and must be examined over a sufficiently extensive period of time to know it thoroughly...Second, the authors assume that policy makers have largely been "elitist," ignorant of teachers and their locally distinctive workplaces...This fine little book demonstrates once more the gadfly power of Dewey's "tinkering" paradigm in the face of the extremist educational policies of the 1980s and 1990s. (Paul Mattingly Journal of American History)

Although aimed primarily at educators, this book also has enormous value for social service professionals and scholars. With the current emphasis on building communities and linking social agencies with schools, understanding school reform is vital...The spate of recent books and articles on school reform has contributed a confusing array of approaches and arguments. Through its historical analysis, this book helps to disentangle some of this confusion and offers critical lessons of history...[This] is a small book with large thoughts. For social service professionals and scholars, it is a quick but profound study in public school reform. It suggests they will be most successful if their projects help teachers solve concrete problems in teaching students...For educators, citizens, and policy makers who toil every day to push the rock of Sisyphus up the hill of change, this little tome offers some real treasures in historical perspective, argument, and realistic expectations. (Penny Bender Sebring Social Service Review)

Tinkering Toward Utopia [is a] brief and masterful overview of one hundred years of school reform in the United States. No one has done it better! Tyack and Cuban fully deserve their 1995 Harvard University Press annual award for an outstanding publication about education and society, and their thoughtful perspectives on a century of reform efforts to improve U.S. schools would almost certainly have delighted the late Lawrence Cremin, the "dean" of educational historians in the United States...Because this book combines the wisdom of its authors with a thoughtful review of the prior research of many others, its thirty pages of endnotes are particularly valuable: they constitute a gold mine for future doctoral students in education. The authors make these endnotes easy to use by printing the page numbers of the corresponding text at the top of each endnote page. Another notable strength of the book is its conciseness. Readers of Tinkering Toward Utopia regularly benefit from succinct statements that summarize the authors' views on complex issues. Any good book does this, but my reading of the prose in this brief volume makes me see the expressive powers of its writers as unusually vivid and precise. In the realm of writing about education, this aspect of the book is a rare occurrence, as education, in my experience, runs close to sociology in its capacity to generate turgid prose. (Harold Howe II Harvard Educational Review)

David Tyack and Larry Cuban have written the most important interpretation of the history of public school reform in many years. Beautifully written, succinctly presented, and brimming with wise observations and keen insights, Tinkering Toward Utopia is one of those rare volumes that historians, educators, and interested laypeople can all profitably read to learn about the origins, complexities, and fate of various school reforms over the past century. The volume is slender in size but gigantic in its intellectual scope. And it is certain to stimulate debate. The topic-public school reform, in its various guises--is amorphous, without agreed-upon boundaries in the world of scholarship or in the public arena...By tackling such an important yet ill-defined subject, [it] is certain to arouse high praise and, one would hope, some controversy, given the nature of the subject. Many of the ideas in the book draw on the authors; previous research, which has been widely cited and very influential among historians of education... Tinkering Toward Utopia demonstrates the value of history in understanding that most familiar of American institutions, the public school. Readers will have difficulty finding another book on the history of school reform that is so thoughtful, beautifully written, and timely. It is without peer. (William J. Reese American Journal of Education)

Excellent, although dated
By Frank R.
Having read Tinkering Toward Utopia for one of my graduate classes in administration at the GSE at Rutgers, I would summarize that the book is excellent, but a little bit dated.

Tyack & Cuban present a well-done overview of the American educational system, from its beginnings in the early 20th century through the mid-1980's. Their theme, "tinkering toward utopia," is an interesting take on addressing school reform throughout the century and sheds light on the problems and pitfalls of "overpromising" and "hyperbole" that have existed--and continue to exist--in American education. Overall, the text is easy to read and is replete with well-developed examples.

My only caution is that although the ideas presented continue through and are valied in modern times, the examples and data contained in the work are, for lack of a better word, dated--11 years in public education, especially with 5+ of those years overshadowed by NCLB, is a long time of increased levels of accountability that are missing in what could be "a century (and a little more) of public school reform." One would hope that a revised edition be published in the near future with a chapter or two specifically devoted to those last 5 years of the 20th century and the transition into the 21st.

However, overall, the text is excellent and highly informative.

Must-read for ed reformers
By B. Lack
The history of public school reform in the United States has been characterized by institutional inertia and myriad failed attempts at wholesale change. Although policy elites, educators, school pundits, and the lay public regularly disagree about why we have intractable schools, David Tyack and Larry Cuban, in Tinkering toward Utopia, argue that a careful and complete understanding of schools as institutions has long eluded those who attempt to effect change in schools. The authors also claim that incremental change in education is a natural and viable phenomenon, not a symbol of a failed system. By rendering these arguments through sociopolitical and historical lenses, they present a comprehensive take on the stagnancy of school reform.

Although the word tinkering can connote clumsiness or incompetence, the authors use it in an equivocal sense in order to argue that educational change for better or worse has been piecemeal, largely due to what they call the grammar of schooling. Radical reforms, such as merit-based teacher pay and open classrooms, have repeatedly failed to make a lasting impression on schools largely because they have attempted to alter the structural and behavioral regularities that are entrenched in the notion of what constitutes a "real school." The argument, although effective, is nothing new: Sarason's (1971) illustrative example of the "man from outer space" immediately comes to mind. However, Tyack and Cuban take this argument to another level by diagnosing many failed reform efforts as "too intramural" (p. 108), and incongruent with external forces (e.g., college admission requirements, labor market needs).

How the grammar of schooling was engendered and why it has remained seemingly immutable is the real thrust of the problem. Like good scholars, Tyack and Cuban do not ignore political dimensions. They soundly argue that despite the ostensible claim that centralized governance of schools by experts would forever "take the schools out of politics," technocratic control of schools actually had just the opposite effect in practice, for the act of devolving power to a single group has the word politics written all over it. Furthermore, the structural regularities that exist today (e.g., age-graded schools, egg-crate classrooms, departmentalized high schools) secured their places in the schooling schema long ago by first gaining the necessary political support, and then by demonstrating that they were efficient and easily replicable. Crystallized school traditions have essentially become the blinders that prevent the universe of alternatives to be considered.

Tyack and Cuban clearly expose their advocacy of the classroom teacher as a critical change agent. Their argument is lucid and point-blank: schools change reforms. "Once the schoolroom door was shut, most teachers retained considerable autonomy to instruct the children as they saw fit" (p. 115). Unsurprisingly, thwarted attempts to introduce change from the outside were typically ones which grossly misunderstood or failed to take into account teacher perspectives. The authors describe reforms as blueprints meant to be altered, not followed indiscriminately, and they buttress this notion with empirical evidence detailing how reforms have been tempered, marginalized, or even rejected by teachers. While careful to avoid the emotional arguments such as the oft-cited teacher-as-unsung-hero plea, they extend a clarion call to empowerment of those who work closer to the front-lines of education.

As a caveat, Tyack and Cuban caution readers not to judge the success of reforms by frequency, longevity, and even fidelity of implementation. Rather, those who understand the value of local differences and teacher concerns, and more importantly, that schools are simply not "wax to be imprinted" (p. 83) but rather highly dynamic and idiosyncratic institutions, will be best able to wield the elusive wand of change.

Best Brief Intro to Educational Reform in the US
By Rob
Tinkering Toward Utopia is simply the best brief introduction to the history of educational reform in the US available. Anyone with a genuine interest in historical explanations of why grand schemes of school reform fail and why "crisis" is the way the US has tended to view its need for school reform, will be rewarded by this clearly written account. The book substitutes complex historical analysis for the usual simple-minded polemics of writing on education, but the authors do not weigh the book down with a lot of historical evidence and inpenetrable footnotes. I highly recommend this book for anyone who cares about the prospects of reforming public schools in the US.

Wonderful resource for teens facing social distress!
By Sarah Baker
I bought this book (as well as the Anxiety Workbook for Teens) to utilize with a teen girls support group I am currently leading. This, like the other book, was packed with useful ideas, questions, activities, suggestions, handouts, and more. It's a great resource for a school or mental health professional to have on the shelf and refer to or make copies from to talk through with teens. Again, this is a book best used in a setting where these can be talked through, as opposed to just filled out personally. It covers a pretty broad range of topics but is very straightforward. I found myself picking and choosing different exercises to meet the needs of my certain group members. There could be more mention about the internet-side of social networking, because more and more teens are wrapped up in that. But there's room for that in discussion.
Overall, I think it's a great resource!

Thanks so much,

By Marilyn Bauer
I purchased this book for my son, 15 to work independently on this summer. The chapters/lessons were short and direct so he had no problems completing them. He struggles with writing expressive thoughts and feelings so we would also work through the Chapters to allow him to discuss orally his feelings. He enjoyed the book and agreed to doing others by same authors. We will work on Bullying next. Although the content was age appropriate I wish they would give more lessons to express himself such as matching, or fill in blanks, etc.

An Excellent Resource!
By Imani G
An excellent resource. Many of the Social Skills books I owned were old and outdated. I needed something that would relate to my students and this generation. The Social Success Workbook is an excellent resource. The lessons and activities are relevant for todays teens.

The Goal, by Eliyahu M. Goldratt

Written in a fast-paced thriller style, The Goal is the gripping novel which is transforming management thinking throughout the Western world. The author has been described by Fortune as a 'guru to industry' and by Businessweek as a 'genius'. It is a book to recommend to your friends in industry - even to your bosses - but not to your competitors. Alex Rogo is a harried plant manager working ever more desperately to try and improve performance. His factory is rapidly heading for disaster. So is his marriage. He has ninety days to save his plant - or it will be closed by corporate HQ, with hundreds of job losses. It takes a chance meeting with a colleague from student days - Jonah - to help him break out of conventional ways of thinking to see what needs to be done. The story of Alex's fight to save his plant is more than compulsive reading. It contains a serious message for all managers in industry and explains the ideas which underline the Theory of Constraints (TOC) developed by Eli Goldratt. Eliyahu M. Goldratt was an internationally recognized leader in the development of new business management concepts and systems, and acts as an educator to many of the world's corporations. The 20th anniversary edition includes a series of detailed case study interviews by David Whitford, Editor at Large, Fortune Small Business, which explore how organizations around the world have been transformed by Eli Goldratt's ideas.

Review
'A survey of the reading habits of managers found that though they buy books by the likes of Tom Peters for display purposes, the one management book they have actually read from cover to cover is The Goal.' The Economist 'Goldratt's system, in essence, forces production managers and workers alike to coordinate their work-with an underlying principle in mind: that 'bottlenecks'...are what ultimately constrain the manufacturing environment.' Business Week 'This theory provided a persuasive solution for factories struggling with production delays and low revenues.' Harvard Business Review 'Like Mrs. Fields and her cookies, The Goal was too tasty to remain obscure. Companies began buying big batches and management schools included it in their curriculums.' Fortune Magazine 'Anybody who considers himself a manager should rush out, buy and devour this book immediately. If you are the only one in your place to have read it, your progress along the path to the top may suddenly accelerate...one of the most outstanding business books I have ever encountered.' Punch Magazine 'Goal readers are now doing the best work of their lives.' Success Magazine 'The Goal has always been essential reading for those looking to eliminate bottlenecks from their business. The latest edition also shows how its ideas have been applied in real life.' Works Management ' Written in the style of a novel it treats the subject of ongoing personal development in a unique way. although the scene is set in a US manufacturing company it can easily be transferred to your business. You will learn as you read this story, recognizing the changes you need to make as you progress. Definitely a book to read...' The Hairdresser

About the Author
Eliyahu M. Goldratt was an internationally recognized leader in the development of new business management concepts and systems, and acted as an educator to many of the world's corporations.

From AudioFile
A novel, business lesson, and wake-up call for leaders whose companies are bogged down by complacency, sloppy thinking, and bureaucratic stupidity, this 1984 text is anchored by the comforting voice of Eric Conger and a strong cast of voice actors who handle the material with immense skill. They deftly balance between the need to jazz up the dry business content and the temptation to succumb to the story's melodrama. The heroic story line seems hindered by extraneous dialogue and subplots, but the voice performances make the production hard to fault as a listening experience. The main point is that companies are profitable when archaic habits are persistently reexamined with fresh eyes for constraints and bottlenecks. Lean manufacturing for projects too?
By D. Evans
This is only the second business novel that I've read, and the form still feels a bit contrived and embarrassing. But I did really enjoy it, in part because I read the book while contemplating how the ideas presented - primarily around lean manufacturing - might apply to my daily work life in software development. After reading The Phoenix Project by Gene Kim, who suggested this book as a basis for his reasoning, I was keen to get a better understanding of lean manufacturing and what system dynamic insights might be underpinning Agile software development techniques and modern DevOps methodology. I wasn't disappointed.

There are issues with the book for sure. It's dated. Some characters are caricatures, especially the female characters. The story alternates between the work and the home life of the main character, a plant manager, and the stories of his troubled marriage and absentee fatherhood I found awkward and painful to follow. How he negotiates with his wife I found misogynistic and then their resolution a bit hollywood.

But I did walk away from the book with some really useful distinctions about lean manufacturing and ideas for how that applies to Agile - especially kanban-style - project management for software. And I'm applying that to our work processes already. This then lead me to read more about the Toyota Production System, the real life example of how these distinctions were applied best in the 1970's. And I found myself wanting to read more on the topic, next up for me is his book Critical Chain, written 13 years later and with a focus more on project management compared to manufacturing.

I fairly enjoyed this book
By Stephanie
As a student seeking a degree in a field similar to that of the main character (Alex), I fairly enjoyed this book. While Goldratt emphasizes key obstacles in any manufacturing industry or production plant, I feel that the novel is written in such a way that anyone could still find the content appealing and informative. He does so by remembering to include other aspects to the narrative that make for a complete story, such as his failing marriage, and his relationship with his children. Although I personally could’ve done without all the drama, I can see the value added to the side storyline. Another aspect I found particularly interesting about the novel was the inclusion of Alex’s relationship with an outside character from his past (Jonah) who proved to be an influential figure in his company’s improvement changes. For me, the highlight of the novel was Goldratt’s approach to defining bottlenecks—which play a crucial role in any organization, not just manufacturing. His approach to defining bottlenecks to the general public was done by painting an image of an everyday real-life scenario, outside of the workplace. Even though Goldratt involved certain technical terms during this enlightening chapter of the book, more or less, the concept of bottlenecks was beautifully simplified to be able to be applied by almost anyone—technical degree or not.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking improvements in their workplace—regardless of your position—whether it involves product handling, management, or simply evaluation of business costs. Personally, I gained valuable insight reading this book because it taught me that while efficiency and productivity are contributing factors to helping a business thrive, other aspects need to considered as well. Often times, businesses with this kind of tunnel vision fail to see how seemingly unconventional methods (such as ceasing robotic operations and reverting back to manually operated systems) can have significantly positive results.

This book is more than just the theory of constraints... It's real life.
By Raynard Kabiling
Eliyahu Goldratt’s, The Goal, is an amazing book for students who are majoring in Industrial Engineering or Business Management, anybody who is working in production management, or planning to work for any type of manufacturing plant. This book is more than a book about the theory of constraints. Not only does it inform the reader about various management strategies, but it also does it in its own strategic way. Bored of books that are too formal and give a bland laundry list of theories and their applications? Then The Goal is a perfect novel for learning more about production management.

The novel is told in the perspective of a struggling fictional production manager who is put into non-fictional manufacturing and personal hardships. As a minor spoiler, a couple interesting production strategies that Goldratt introduces in his story are the theory of constraints, the concept of a bottleneck, and the three terms that are essential to a balanced firm. Using events in the life of the main character, Alex Rogo, we are able to observe how these notions can relate to our domestic lives. An example of how cleverly Goldratt ties a business strategy to the character’s personal story could be observed with the idea of a bottleneck. Rogo connects the concepts of a bottleneck to his son’s Boy Scout hiking trip and how the chubbiest Boy Scout inhibited the hikers’ ability to maintain a quick walking speed. Through this, not only does it demonstrate how Rogo grasped its application, but also, it helps the reader fully understand it as an important aspect to today’s business.

Throughout the novel, Goldratt cleverly informs and teaches the reader in this way, where real world production strategies are not only applicable to Alex Rogo’s life, but in our lives as well. By using this fictional character and his attempt to correlate his personal life to his professional business, we sympathize as professionals to improve every aspect of our lives in very similar ways.

Journey to Ixtlan: The Lessons of Don Juan, by Carlos Castaneda

In Journey to Ixtlan, Carlos Castaneda introduces readers to this new approach for the first time and explores, as he comes to experience it himself, his own final voyage into the teachings of don Juan, sharing with us what it is like to truly “stop the world” and perceive reality on his own terms.

Originally drawn to Yaqui Indian spiritual leader don Juan Matus for his knowledge of mind-altering plants, bestselling author Carlos Castaneda immersed himself in the sorcerer’s magical world entirely. Ten years after his first encounter with the shaman, Castaneda examines his field notes and comes to understand what don Juan knew all along—that these plants are merely a means to understanding the alternative realities that one cannot fully embrace on one’s own.

Better than his first two books
By David
It took a lot for me to get through Castaneda's first book, The Teachings of Don Juan. I was totally unimpressed with it. The whole book was essentially about how a Yaqui Indian "sorcerer" put naive Carlos, then a graduate student in anthropology from UCLA doing research on a hallucinogenic plant, through a bunch of weird drug trips that shook his view of reality. And to me, that doesn't jive at all.
But in Journey to Ixtlan, Castaneda goes back and says, "wait, start over, reset. I was wrong about all of that drug stuff, it's really not necessary, don Juan just put me through that because I was too stubborn and 'rational' to see that there may be other views of reality than the ones I subscribe to." In this book he discovers that he doesn't need drugs to experience other worlds. Rather, there are a series of practices for right living that enable the possibility of perceiving in nonordinary ways.
So Journey to Ixtlan is where the real lessons about living life in the warrior's way begin. I recommend this book highly as a starting point for Castaneda's work; forget the first two books.

A Classic of Modern Spirituality
By rampageous_cuss
This is a life-changing book and a spiritual classic (I rarely give ANYTHING 5 stars) but someone ought to mention that there is a certain amount of controversy about the accuracy of Castaneda's Don Juan series. Researcher Richard de Mille is probably the most even-handed of the critics and The_Don_Juan_Papers is worth a read, though some of the criticisms are merely carping small-mindedness.
Regardless of your attitude toward Castaneda's (or Don Juan's!)literal accuracy the series, of which Journey_to_Ixtlan is the best, presents a coherent and engaging spiritual existentialism. A Must Read!!!

Well worth the journey
By Hallstatt Prince
Forget the debate as to whether Castaneda's writings were a hoax or that his books became important reading for the drug culture. Although I suggest you read his first two books before reading this one but if you read only one book by Carlos Castaneda this is the book to read. Be his books accurate reporting by a cultural anthropologist (which is becoming increasingly more and more doubtful), mysticism or hokum, this particular book is quite moving and lyrical. And whether his stories are real or imagined and whether the teaching he transmutes came from Don Juan or from his own mind by his knowledge as a trained anthropologist the underlying mystical principles of these stories cannot be dismissed out of hand.
Shaman, poet and perhaps an academic scoundrel it is Castaneda's poetry and story telling that comes shining through in this book.
If Castaneda's books were a hoax and were represented as cultural anthropology as a better hook to sell books it is a shame because he did a disservice to science and to his legacy. Still I myself, as a former researcher in Harvard University's anthropology department and a student of human ethology, can forgive this sin on one level and enjoy this book as a powerful work of liturature.
For if there has been a wrong that has been committed against anthropology it is one that was done by the way the books were marketed and perhaps by the author's personality itself. The works themselves should not suffer and be shunned for this.
His legacy would have been better served if he wrote these same works as a writer of fiction.
I believe the author would have been wiser to present his works the way Gurdjieff presented "Beelzebub's Tales to his Grandson" rather than obstinately insisting there really was such a person as Don Juan (even if in the off chance that his teacher did exist).
Despite the controversy his writing stands on its own and Journey to Ixtlan is a powerful, touching, enchanting and beautiful book.

Architecture Oriented Otherwise (Writing Matters), by David Leatherbarrow

Now available in paperback, renowned writer and thinker David Leatherbarrow's groundbreaking Architecture Oriented Otherwise argues for a more profound, yet simpler, way of thinking about architecture, namely on the basis of how it performs. It's not only about how a building functions but also how it acts, including its effects on observers and inhabitants as well as on the landscape that situates it. Drawing on an encyclopedic reading of contemporary philosophy, as well as from the work of architects whose work he admires, including Peter Zumthor, Renzo Piano, Le Corbusier, and Frank Lloyd Wright, Leatherbarrow challenges architects to think about their buildings in a vastly wider context, opening up the possibility of creating works that are richer in meaning, quality, and life.

Valuable ESL text
By J. Craft
My students gain great insight into a different kind of reading in English through the wide range of stories and poems in this book. It is useful for idea-generation and introduction of various aspects of American history and culture. The lit-class style exercises don't have to be used in class, but if there's time, they can be a useful tool for building students' awareness of different levels of reading and language. I've used this text in my high intermediate academic writing/reading course for over 15 years. The works are timeless.

Global Health: An Introduction to Current and Future Trends, by Kevin McCracken, David R. Phillips

The health of human populations around the world is constantly changing and the health profiles of most nations in the early twenty-first century global health landscape are unrecognizable compared with those of just a century ago.

This book examines and explains these health changes and considers likely future patterns and changes. While the overall picture charted is one of progress and improvement, certain unfortunate regressions and stubbornly persistent health inequalities are equally shown to be part of the evolving patterns of global health.

The chapters of the book are organized in three major parts:

  • The first part introduces readers to the principal concepts of global health, and to the idea of populations having distinctive health profiles. In particular, it explores how those profiles can be measured, and how they change, using the umbrella concepts and theories of epidemiological and health transition.
  • Building on the first section, the second part focuses on the evolution of health states, as well as paying particular attention to the reasons for the many subnational inequalities in global health. It also examines health challenges such as the continuing infectious disease burden and current emerging ‘epidemics’.
  • The final part transports readers from the current health scene to future possible and probable health scenarios, acknowledging the challenges presented by global environmental change, as well as issues centred around geopolitics and human security.

Using clear and original explanations of complex issues, this text makes extensive use of boxed case studies and international examples, with thought-provoking discussion questions posed for readers at the end of each chapter. Global Health is essential reading for students of global health, public health and development studies.
